Former Daredevil actor Peter Shinkoda (played Nobu) reveals to #SaveDaredevil in a panel chat on YouTube some racism behind the scenes from former Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb.
Suggesting that his character Nobu and Wai Ching Ho’s Madame Gao were essentially kneecapped by Loeb because he held some prejudice against Asian characters on the show getting deeper storylines. Revealing his own character Nobu had stuff scrapped directly by Loeb’s racist attitude.
Here is what Shinkoda had to say.
Jeph Loeb told the writers’ room not to write for Nobu and Gao. Saying that Loeb’s reasoning was “Nobody cares about Chinese people and Asian people. There were three previous Marvel movies a trilogy called Blade made where Wesley Snipes kills 200 Asians each movie, nobody gives a shit, so don’t write about Nobu and Gao”.
You can hear Peter’s words for yourself.
He also highlighted on Twitter that neither himself or Wai Ching Ho were later invited by Marvel/Netflix to the Season 2 premiere.
Loeb’s bizarre attitudes towards Asian folks/culture isn’t a new thing. It was on center stage at San Diego Comic-Con in 2018, where he wore a Karate Halloween costume to moderate the Iron First panel when actress Jessica Henwick rightfully had him take the costume off before the panel began.
There had already been some backlash from the fandom that Iron Fist had been a potential entry point to have an Asian-American leading superhero character from Marvel, years before Shang-Chi was announced.
Below you can see that exchange between Jessica and Jeph right here.
Jeph Loeb is now out at Marvel Television with the company re-branded as Marvel TV Studios with Kevin Feige overseeing it. It’ll be interesting to see if Shang-Chi was a direct response to this nonsense and if other stories will be made public.
This isn’t the first claim of odd sexism/racism from Marvel brass. At one point, Ike Perlmutter had direct control over projects at Marvel Studios and was said to be behind the delay of films such as Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Black Widow. Perlmutter was later removed from the film division after an intervention from Disney giving Kevin Feige more control over the studio.
Yesterday, it was reported by Variety that Paramount Pictures is now in final negotiations with Amazon Studios to sell them the global rights to the Skydance Media action movie Without Remorse.
Based on the novel from Tom Clancy, it has a script penned by Taylor Sheridan (Sicario, Wind River). Stefano Sollima, who directed the feature adaptation previously worked with Amazon for the Prime Video series ZeroZeroZero.
Paramount had originally planned on releasing the Michael B. Jordan film on September 18th before moving it’s release to February 26th, 2021, after COVID-19 concerns but has instead decided to sell to Amazon instead and will drop on Amazon Prime.
Jordan plays Clark, a former U.S. Navy SEAL that is recruited into the C.I.A. as an operator. The character was previously played by Willem Dafoe in Clear & Present Danger and Liev Schreiber in The Sum of All Fears.
There is a good chance that Michael B. Jordan’s John Clark could eventually crossover with Amazon’s Jack Ryan series which is set in the same universe created by Tom Clancy. Jack and John have interacted on multiple times in the Jack Ryan novels, having Without Remorse at Amazon allows them some extra wiggle-room to have them cross paths in the future.
When Without Remorse will be released is currently unknown but since it was going to be ready for September there is a shot that it could be released on Amazon Prime before the end of the year.
Free Guy director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds will be reuniting for a time-travel feature film project once titled Our Name Is Adam that is coming from Skydance Media.
It’s based on a spec-script penned by T.S. Nowlin that later saw screenwriter Jonathan Tropper attached to rework it.
Reynolds will star as a man who must travel back in time to get help from his 13-year-old self. Together, they encounter their late father, who is now the same age as Reynolds.
Ryan has quickly turned into one of Skydance’s most visible actors after working on Michael Bay’s 6 Underground and is expected to resume filming on Red Notice very soon in Atlanta. Both projects being distributed by Netflix and there is a good shot this new one will end up at Netflix as well.
The Canadian actor is also attached for Netflix’s Dragon’s Lair, a fantasy adventure film based on the famous arcade game. Considering Ryan’s busy schedule it’s unclear when this could begin filming.
Other upcoming projects from Skydance Media include The Tomorrow War, G.I. Joe Origins: Snake Eyes, Without Remorse, and Top Gun: Maverick.
Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is currently in negotiations to distribute the untitled science fiction action film from director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) and starring Tom Cruise, the eye-grabbing gimmick of the film is that it will be shot in space something that really hasn’t been done with a studio blockbuster.
They mention that the budget could be over $200 million which is expected given that the costs involved with shooting in space, something that really hasn’t been undertaken when it comes to a narrative studio feature film. Cruise himself could end up earning something in the range of $30-60 million.
Details about the movie are scarce but it’s a given that it will be in the science fiction genre and we likely won’t get an official synopsis until an official deal is done.
Tom and Doug had also been trying to made a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem that will be happening anytime soon despite Liman’s optimistic statements made last year. Cruise is expected to resume filming on Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 for Paramount Pictures soon in the United Kingdom.
When they plan on shooting the untitled project is currently a mystery.
Ever since the release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, there has been chatter about Donald Glover’s return as the charming Lando Calrissian in a future Star Wars project. It eventually led to a handful of rumors online suggesting that Donald Glover could be getting a Lando series on Disney+.
Now, that Lando returning rumor is back with Noah Outlaw revealing on the Kessel Run Transmissions podcast that Glover is expected to lead his own Disney+ series reprising the beloved Star Wars character.
You can watch below with a snippet posted by Noah on Twitter.
We can finally announce that Donald Glover will be reprising his role as Lando in a future #StarWars series! What do you guys think of this news?? pic.twitter.com/TyQGjM0kdn
The Kessel Run guys previously stated that Lucasfilm would be making a spinoff animated series focusing on the clone trooper unit The Bad Batch from The Clone Wars, which turned out to be accurate and was confirmed by Disney/Lucasfilm not too long ago in an official press release.
This new tidbit is certainly far from official as Lucasfilm hasn’t made any announcements about Glover or Lando making a return but it’s worth considering for the time being.
If this Lando series comes together it would be interesting to see what characters from Solo: A Star Wars Story would end up returning and if the criminal syndicate Crimson Dawn would have a presence.
Russo Brothers Tease ‘Secret Wars’ Could Be Bigger Than ‘The Infinity Saga’
The Bro Bible was able to speak with The Russo Brothers about what could coax them to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as with another massive event like Secret Wars. Something they have teased in the past they would be interested in tackling while on the press tour for Avengers: Endgame.
JOE RUSSO: “You know, I read that when I was 10 or 11, and it was the scale of getting all of the heroes together. It was one of the first major books to do that — that was really event-storytelling to me at its finest. And what happens when you put all of those personalities together. I also like the idea of villains having to team up with heroes. Anth and I like complicated relationships between heroes and villains, we like villains who believe they’re heroes in their own stories, so it’s all sort of built into this notion of Secret Wars. To execute something on the scale of Infinity War was directly related to the dream of Secret Wars, which is even larger in scale.”
ANTHONY RUSSO: “It would be the biggest movie you could possibly imagine, so that’s what really excites us about the story — the ambition of it is even bigger than the ambition of the Infinity Saga.”
It has yet to be made official that the Russo Brothers are even coming back and Secret Wars isn’t one of the announced projects in development, so it’s hard to say if the pair will get their chance to make it anytime soon. Marvel is already busy trying to finish Phase 4 projects and getting other things ready like their Blade, X-Men, and Fantastic Four reboots.
‘Logan’ Actress Dafne Keen Open To Reprising X-23 In The MCU
When asked by Comic Book if Dafne Keen would like to reprise the role of Laura aka X-23 in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Logan actress replied “definitely”.
At one point, James Mangold had been mulling over developing a solo spinoff film focusing on Dafne’s Laura before 20th Century Fox folded into Disney with the merger.
I think the likelihood of Keen returning is extremely slim just like Famke Janssen reprising the Jean Grey role in the MCU as everything points towards Marvel giving the main franchise a hard-reboot. However, there is a shot that Keen could reprise the X-23 role in something more mature like Deadpool 3 or X-Force.
Keen is currently 15 and would be around 19-20 when Marvel is expected to relaunch their version of the X-Men.
Tom Holland Suggests ‘Spider-Man 3’ Could Wrap Filming In February 2021
Actor Tom Holland has begun filming Uncharted in Germany and a quote was making the rounds from a family interview on Patreon (spotted by MCU Direct) where he hoped to have completed production on Spider-Man 3 by February 2021.
However, he may have either misspoke or is potentially going by outdated studio information concerning the film’s production schedule. Considering that Spider-Man 3 is expected to shoot in places like Atlanta, New York City, and Los Angeles it is increasingly unlikely that will happen anytime soon given the state of COVID-19 in the United States alongside Uncharted‘s shoot just starting. that they’ll be able to begin in the fall.
Marvel Studios Still Seeking An Actress To Play ‘Hawkeye’s Kate Bishop Or Will They Land On Hailee Steinfeld?
After recent news from the Hollywood Reporter that Marvel Studios has hired three directors for their upcoming Hawkeye series starring Jeremy Renner, there still seems to be a search to find an actress to play Barton’s protege Kate Bishop.
Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee, Edge of Seventeen, True Grit) had been previously linked for talks by Variety and this is what The Hollywood Reporter had to say recently in their report about Hailee’s involvement with the Disney+ series.
One of the arcs of the series is Barton’s mentoring of a new generation of archer, Kate Bishop. Hailee Steinfeld was previously in negotiations for the part but it is unclear if her deal has closed. Marvel had no comment.
If Hailee ultimately doesn’t land the role it could be due to her contract with Apple TV+ for the drama series Dickinson.
Comic Book Artist Rob Liefeld Hopeful For A ‘Cable’ Movie
While speaking with Collider, comic book artist Rob Liefeld and co-creator of X-Men characters such as Deadpool and Cable, revealed he’s still very much interested in seeing a Cable movie coming together in the future.
LIEFELD: “Cable should have his own movie series. He can exist independent of Deadpool in a heartbeat. He has for years. If Deadpool’s been in like 330 comics, Cable’s been in about 520. Yes, I’ve counted…. In between Deadpool 2 wrapping and opening, I got really close with Josh. And he was very excited about exploring Cable in the subsequent sequels. The X-Force standalone movie that was, in his own words, Cable-centric.”
Rob has been extremely vocal over the years about Nathan Summers aka Cable being able to handle his own film franchise.
While Marvel Studios is seemingly set to have Ryan Reynolds carry-overs from the Fox films as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool, it remains to be seen if Josh Brolin will reprise the Cable role in future films. Ryan had confirmed back in December that Deadpool 3 is in actively development at Marvel Studios after moving from 20th Century after the merger.
While Marvel Studios has been having a tough time resuming productions or even starting it with others, they’ve finally found directors for the upcoming solo Hawkeye series starring Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Troop Zero directors Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood along with Comrade Detective‘s Rhys Thomas have been tapped to work on the Disney+ series that will introduce Barton’s protege Kate Bishop, a member of the Young Avengers.
It’s still unknown who will ultimately take the Bishop role after Hailee Steinfeld had been linked previously but had a conflict with her Apple TV+ series Dickinson.
When they’ll begin filming is a little uncertain as they had been planning on a shoot in Atlanta, Georgia and because of the pandemic they’ve had to pause other shows shooting in the area, which could lead to delays for Hawkeye‘s start. Georgia’s governor doesn’t seem to be taking the situation as seriously as he should be and this could lead to the state having trouble resuming it’s film and television sector in 2020.
The hiring of these three directors for Hawkeye would suggest that it will be the next series to filming while She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Moon Knight have yet to officially land their own directors.
As most suspected, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier won’t begin airing next month due to delays in finishing their production. Although there is word that WandaVision might be delayed until spring 2021 despite chatter of a December release.
Deadline reports that the Russo Brothers have chosen their next directorial effort after tackling the bank robbery film Cherry starring Tom Holland.
The Avengers: Endgame directors will tackle The Gray Man for Netflix, a spy film with a budget reportedly over $200 million making it the most expensive film at the streaming service to date. Adding that heavy-hitters Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans have been set to take the lead roles.
AGBO will also produce the action flick.
The action thriller is a deadly duel between killers as Court Gentry (Gosling) is hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort of Gentry’s at the CIA.
The script based on the Mark Greaney novel was penned by Joe Russo with some rewrites from Captain America franchise writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
To those who lurk in the shadows, he’s known as the Gray Man. He is a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible and then fading away. And he always hits his target. Always. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. Forces like money. And power. And there are men who hold these as the only currency worth fighting for. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness.
But Court Gentry is going to prove that, for him, there’s no gray area between killing for a living and killing to stay alive…
They’re hoping to begin filming next January in Los Angeles, California and various international locations yet to be determined. However, COVID-19 could cause issues for the project and we’ll be interested to see if they stick to shooting the film in the United States.
The project seems to be Netflix trying it’s best to wiggle-out of the wave of original films that look extremely generic despite their hefty budgets. Hiring the directors of the most successful film at the box office might payoff.
Also, there are nine novels in The Gray Man series which would allow Netflix/AGBO to turn the project into a franchise.
Ryan Gosling is attached for Universal’s Wolfman reboot from writer/director Leigh Whannell.
Last year, Constantine actor Keanu Reeves revealed to Variety he would be open to the idea of making a sequel and reprising the role of John Constantine.
REEVES: “I’ve always wanted to play John Constantine again. I just love that world too and I love that character. Yeah, I just had a blast playing that character.”
Director Francis Lawrence has now weighed-in while speaking with our pals over at Slash Film, revealing he has spoken with Keanu and producer/screenwriter Akiva Goldsman about the prospect of a sequel. However, mentioned that the character is out of their hands potentially referring to the Justice League Dark series being developed for HBO Max by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot.
LAWRENCE: “I think we all wanted to do it. It was successful enough. We wanted to make a responsible, more R-rated movie. By responsible, I mean we’d make a movie that wouldn’t cost quite as much as the original, which we thought was going to be PG-13. We worked on the sequel for a while. It was tricky to come up with where to take it. What I really liked about the first one was it was a really personal story, so I thought it’d be a mistake to get caught up in the supernatural gobblygook. The idea of a personal story was really interesting, and that was the hard thing to come across. We have been talking about it recently. It’s always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realizing there’s a real cult following for this movie, it’d be fun to make. Keanu, Akiva, and I have actually talked about it. “
“Unfortunately, I don’t even remember who has it, but with all these shared universes that exist now, with Constantine being a part of Vertigo, which is a part of DC, people have plans for these shared universes. You know, possibly different Constantines and things like that. Right now, we don’t have that character available to us for TV or movies, which is a bummer. We all investigated it, but I think it’s kind of crazy when you have Keanu, who would love to do another Constantine, and us wanting to do another Constantine, and people are like, ‘Uh, no, we got other plans’. We’ll see what happens.”
We still don’t know if John Constantine will play a role in the new HBO Max series but that makes the most sense at the moment.
Due to Keanu’s recently career resurgence thanks to the John Wick franchise, there might be a reason for Warner Bors. to at least consider having him reprise the role whenever the character resurfaces.
CONSTANTINE –As a suicide survivor, demon hunter John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) has literally been to hell and back — and he knows that when he dies, he’s got a one-way ticket to Satan’s realm unless he can earn enough goodwill to climb God’s stairway to heaven. While helping policewoman Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) investigate her identical twin’s apparent suicide, Constantine becomes caught up in a supernatural plot involving both demonic and angelic forces. Based on the DC/Vertigo “Hellblazer” comics.
While it’s been ages since we’ve had an update concerning New Line Cinema’s DC Comics film Black Adam from director Jaume Collet-Serra. It looks like we have our first big casting addition since confirmation that Dwayne Johnson would be playing the titular character.
The Hollywood Reporter says that the studio has hired up-and-coming heartthrob Noah Centineo in the role of Atom Smasher, the DC character had been long rumored for the film.
Centineo will play Atom Smasher, a character who can control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strength.
Noah had been previously hired to play Prince Adam/He-Man in Sony’s long-delayed Masters of The Universe reboot film.
Black Adam is said to be shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. However, with the United States including Georgia seeing a massive uptick in new Coronavirus cases a production start anytime soon likely wouldn’t be smart or safe on the part of New Line Cinema.
I had also heard that a portion was expected to shoot in California, another state that is dealing with a wave of new cases.
Warner Bros. has given the film a release date of Decemeber 22nd, 2021. It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to stick that date if production is delayed into 2021.
