‘Thunderbolts’ Is Latest MCU Film Paused Due To WGA Strike, ‘Deadpool 3’ Next?

The Writers Guild of America strike is still ongoing as a deal still hasn’t been made between writers and studios. This has led to a handful of high-profile projects pausing until the strike has been resolved. One of those recent projects was Marvel’s big “Blade” reboot starring Mahershala Ali and just last night more MCU delays were announced.

Deadline revealed that both “Thunderbolts” and the Disney+ series “Wonder Man” have been paused alongside “Blade.” This is happening as writers from “Agatha: Coven of Chaos” and “Vision Quest” have been spotted on the picket line, which suggests those projects are currently without their writing staff.

“Captain America: New World Order” has been shooting in Atlanta but doesn’t look like principal photography is going to be halted for now (that could change). Although, any reshoots or pickups are said to be only taking place until after the strike is over, which makes perfect sense as those scenes tend to be rewritten or altered during the editing process.

Deadpool 3” remains a big question mark but all signs are pointing that film is heading towards a production pause during the strike as well. There are also some rumblings from those working on the film that despite what fan sites and Twitter accounts have been claiming over the past week, “Deadpool 3” might not actually have started production and is said to begin filming sometime in June. As of this posting Shawn Levy, Ryan Reynolds nor Hugh Jackman have made any official announcement that filming is underway on social media accounts, which is odd as you might expect them to that given how active they are and had used social media to announce Jackman’s big return as Wolverine for the sequel. However, costume and camera tests are mostly likely what are happening at this stage ahead since cast members are only now arriving in England. It could help explain why Jackman was recently spotted in a production van with a trimmed beard but never mentioned the film.

Regardless if filming has started or not, next month is going to make shooting “Deadpool 3” even messier as the DGA deal comes to an end on June 30 and someone like guild member, Shawn Levy, isn’t expected to cross the picket line. So, it does feel like it’s only a matter of time before Marvel makes a similar announcement as they did for their other big summer productions like “Blade” and “Thunderbolts.” Given that we don’t see Marvel completing production in a month it’s not hard to imagine that “Deadpool 3” getting delayed too.

Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ Series Adds Director Stella Meghie & ‘Mindhunter’ Actress Lauren Glazier

Marvel Studios has certainly been experimenting with genres and obscure characters when it comes to their Disney+ series with things like She-Hulk, Moon Knight, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Choas, and Echo. Another upcoming project that will test the waters of what Marvel fans are willing to watch is Wonder Man. The super-strong character has villainous origins as he was given superpowers by villain Baron Zemo to then battle The Avengers but eventually shook-off his villainous ways becoming an official member of team alongside folks like Dr. Hank McCoy aka Beast and is also a Hollywood movie star, which certainly would make things complicated.

There has been a decent update coming from Deadline as the outlet has revealed that Marvel Studios has tapped Canadian director Stella Meghie (Minx, Insecure) to work on multiple episodes on the Disney+ series alongside Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty). That’s not the only update for Wonder Man, as the same outlet also announced that Mindhunter actress Lauren Glazier has joined the cast that already includes Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen) as our protagonist Simon Williams and a returning Ben Kingsley reprising his Iron Man 3 role of Trevor Slattery, last seen in Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings.

It’s unknown if any of Wonder Man’s connections to Baron Zemo will actually happen in the live-action incarnations as Marvel Studios is well-known for taking liberties to the source material and the origins of their superheroes/villains. However, we’ll take any excuse to bring back Daniel Bruhl as the super-soldier hating baddie and giving us a chance to see more of Zemo’s dance moves.

We’re sure more casting announcements will be made in the near future. Stay tuned for more updates.

‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ Screenwriter Teasing Namor Will Appear In The Next Big Superhero Crossover Event?

It’s exciting to think we have two more Avengers installments on the way from Marvel Studios with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty being helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings). The filmmaker will be working with screenwriter Jeff Loveness on the sequel, who recently penned Ant-Man 3 and will tackle Jonathan Majors‘ Kang The Conqueror for the second time. During a recent interview with ComicBook, the writer revealed a character he’s extremely excited to get his hands on and it’s one we’ve already been introduced to.

“Namor, man. I’m excited to write Namor,” Loveness said when asked about what he was excited about moving forward as he continues to work within the MCU.

Although, not directly said this could easily be taken as a hint that Tenonch Huerta’s Namor might be a character that will show up in The Kang Dynasty, mainly, because a solo project hasn’t been announced and we’re still unsure if he’ll be appearing in Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four reboot (given Namor’s comic book connections to that superhero team) that is set to begin shooting sometime next year. An Avengers project would seemingly be larger enough to give some wiggle-room to allow for Namor to make a return after being introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

It’s also worth mentioning that while working on Rick & Morty, Loveness as a writer worked on the season five episode that introduced Mr. Nimbus. A character is a direct parody of Namor The Sub-Mariner but with a heightened level of sexuality and more silly/theatrical than his MCU counterpart.

While Namor was the antagonist of Wakanda Forever and had his own reasons to protect the world from finding his underwater kingdom by any means. In the comics, the character has been quite active in the superhero role as well joining the ranks of Marvel teams like The Avengers, The Defenders, The Illuminati, and The Invaders. So, it remains to be seen if Namor will actually show up, but, hopefully, if he does it’ll be to help boost his heroic/anti-hero persona and not double-down as being a villain.

Barring any more changes to the MCU slate by Disney, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.

Marvel’s ‘Deadpool 3’ Confirmed To Shoot In The United Kingdom

Marvel Studios is getting ready to begin shooting their first big mutant project since landing the X-Men rights after the big merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox. With Deadpool 3 finally moving forward after early development back during the Fox era, we’ll get to see might be the end of the Singerverse and the third installment becoming the big swan-song with Hugh Jackman reprising the Wolverine one last time (before the main X-Men reboot at Marvel) with rumblings of other Singerverse actors possibly making their return too.

Back in October, The Ronin first learned that filming on Deadpool 3 would be taking place in the United Kingdom (a big pivot as the last two installments shot in Reynolds’ hometown of Vancouver) and this has now been confirmed via The Hollywood Reporter in an article about another upcoming project, Boy Band, as part of their breakdown of the actor’s upcoming filming schedule. Where they name London as the main location for Deadpool 3 as cameras are said to be gearing up to roll sometime in the spring.

Of course, there have been all sorts of theories of how Marvel Studios will ultimately bring Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson into the hardline MCU (616 Universe), but we’ll have to wait a bit for real confirmation about the film’s story. One of the more mysterious elements of the film is the casting of Emma Corrin (Nosferatu, The Crown) as the film’s unnamed villain.

Deadpool 3, which if you’ve been hiding under a rock for the last five years has been confirmed to be getting an R-rating multiple times by everyone involved with the superhero pic and has a release date set for November 8, 2024. However, given how theatrical releases change all the time, it’s possible the project could be bumped into early 2025.

‘Thunderbolts’: Steven Yeun Lands Key Mystery Role In MCU Action Pic

As production is about to begin soon on Marvel’s next big entry in their stream of action-centric superhero films with Thunderbolts. Another key role has been filled as Deadline reports that actor Steven Yeun (Nope, The Walking Dead) has nabbed an undisclosed part in the film and the role is expected to be rather big with the possibility of returning in future Marvel films beyond Thunderbolts. It has director Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank) and screenwriter Eric Pearson (Black Widow) on the creative side cooking things up.

Yeun is yet another interesting casting addition to the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe and we’re dying to find out what the role actually is. Although, I’m sure we’re going to be looking at an influx of theories and “online rumors” claiming what that role could be. Some of Yeun’s most recent film credits include Jordan Peele’s sci-fi horror film Nope, Minari, Burning, Okja, and Mickey 7, a new sci-fi pic from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-Ho that has Robert Pattinson in a lead role.

The Marvel actioner already has an impressive character lineup that consists of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), U.S Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). Julia Louis-Dreyfus will also reprise her role of CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, which was established in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. One of the most recent additions to the film was actress Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), who also took another unnamed part in the team-up movie.

There is also an expectation that Harrison Ford’s President Ross will be showing up in this film along with Captain America: New World Order, taking over the role from the late William Hurt. It’s unclear if we’ll be seeing Ross transform into the Red Hulk like his comic book counterpart, but things are starting to look like the anti-hero team is going to end up being his namesake and likely ending up America’s own sanctioned black-ops super soldier team.

Thunderbolts is set to begin shooting soon with a release date of July 26, 2024 and we’ll keep our fingers crossed we’ll learn more details this summer at Comic-Con.

‘Deadpool 3’: Emma Corrin Tapped To Play Villain In MCU Sequel

While we’re excited to see what Marvel’s X-Men reboot will end up looking like, fans will have to wait a bit longer for that. Meanwhile, we’ll be exploring the Singerverse/Fox era one more time with Deadpool 3 (title subject to change) set to bring back not only Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson but the funny man was able to finally able coax Hugh Jackman out of Wolverine retirement to dawn the claws one more time. It’ll technically become the first official mutant film to release in theaters.

We finally have our first big new casting addition thanks to a report from Deadline. They have revealed that British actress Emma Corrin (The Crown) has been selected to play the sequel’s villain. There is an expectation that filming on the pic that will be helmed by Shawn Leavy (The Adam Project, Stranger Things) will take place in the United Kingdom.

However, there aren’t any character details being mentioned making hard to know for sure if Corrin is playing someone established in X-Men mythology or someone new. There are plenty of female villains that Corrin could be playing such as Spiral, Death, Raven/Mystique, Emma Frost, and Mister Sinister’s cohort Madelyne Prior aka The Goblin Queen. Then again, they could be attempting a new villain or a combination of them from the comics.

Deadpool 3 is officially set to be released on November 8, 2025 and has long been confirmed by Disney/Marvel it’ll indeed keep it’s R-rating, like the previous installments with have a heap of extreme violence and cussing. It’ll be the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe projects to skew for more mature audiences.

Reynolds, a producer and creative force on the franchise, has officially welcomed Corrin to the Deadpool family with an public post on his Twitter account that you can see below.

‘Thunderbolts’: Marvel Enlists ‘The Bear’ Actress Ayo Edebiri For Upcoming Action Pic

Marvel is riding high after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever landing the studio’s first Oscar nomination with Angela Bassett nabbing a spot for Best Supporting Actress. It’ll be interesting to see what the fallout of those events will contribute to the plot of something like Thunderbolts as the film will see Julia Louis-Dreyfus return as CIA director Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine. The character was extremely interested in attacks committed by Namor and how they could secure their own stockpile of vibranium for U.S. military purposes as there is quietly an arms race between countries to find the precious metal outside of Wakanda.

The action pic from director Jake Schreier (Robot & Frank) and screenwriter Eric Pearson (Black Widow) has quite the lineup which includes Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and U.S Agent (Wyatt Russell), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). Now, Deadline reports that Marvel has added actress Ayo Edebiri from The Bear in a mysterious role and remains to be seen if she’ll be joining that aforementioned team.

Fans seemed to have been expecting a Thunderbolts project would become a one-to-one mirror image of the comic book incarnations but as with previous MCU films the film studio sort of does their own thing. Some early backlash from the lineup announcement from San Diego Comic-Con 2022 from last summer had some questioning where Baron Zemo was and why the group consisted mainly of super-soldiers. Marvel tends to make choices based on what works best for their projects and haven’t exactly confirmed what the film’s plot is going to focus on or why they’re being assembled.

Another element we’re excited to see executed is Harrison Ford playing Thunderbolt Ross potentially in both Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts. There have been rumblings the character formerly played the late William Hurt is now the president of the United States and if the comic books are any indication, he could end up getting his own powers becoming the Red Hulk (almost appeared in Captain America: Civil War).

Thunderbolts is set to begin shooting this year with a release date of July 26, 2024 and we’ll keep our fingers crossed we’ll learn more details this summer at Comic-Con.

Julius Onah To Direct ‘Captain America 4’ For Marvel Studios

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Steve Rogers hand down the Captain America mantle and shield to Sam Wilson. However, that was easier said than done as the U.S. government had its own ideas for who should take the position leading to the complex events of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

In the series, we see that the government that turned its back on Wilson also threw another super-soldier in prison with Isaiah Bradley simply because a black man couldn’t be “trusted” with his powers. or follow orders. The entire reason for the Disney+ project was to show the transition of Anthony Mackie’s Falcon to Captain American before getting his own film.

The Hollywood Reporter has an update concerning Captain America 4 as Marvel has tapped director Julius Onah (Cloverfield Paradox, Luce) to helm the fourth installment. We should expect some of the hard-hitting themes the streaming series as head writer Malcolm Spellman is co-writing the script with Dalan Musson.

Captain America 4 is expected to continue the events after The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, which likely means that Zemo and U.S. Agent could make their return or have some connective tissue to the upcoming Thunderbolts film that has Jake Schreier (Frank & Robot) attached to direct or even the Armor Wars show.

The Serpent Society would make for a great surrogate for HYDRA in the Sam Wilson films, after the terrorist orgainzation that was embedded within SHIELD was dissolved, because the roster is massive and would move away from the Nazi/Red Skull connection.

While most have accepted that Mackie is now the new Captain America, there have been an oddball group that believe that Rogers will return to take up the shield. As Evans and Kevin Feige has downplayed Rogers’ future in the MCU. The actor doubling-down with the following tweet after THR added ambigous/unsourced spectulation that Evans could be coming back.

Marvel Studios is heading back to Comic-Con later this month and we could learn about its release date.

Ryan Gosling Wants A Crack At Playing Marvel’s Ghost Rider After Denying ‘Nova’ Rumor

Ryan Gosling stars in the massive Netflix film The Gray Man, which sees him work alongside Marvel Studios alumni such as the directing team The Russo Brothers, and Captain America actor Chris Evans. This had led many to consider that he might eventually join the MCU in a heroic role.

While there had been rumblings about Gosling being courted to play Nova in a yet-to-be-confirmed project at Marvel, during a tease for a new interview with MTV News the Canadian actor said that is “untrue.”

However, added he would be keen to play one superhero, Ghost Rider.

“Ryan and I chatted about the Nova rumors yesterday which he said aren’t true. But this morning Ryan reached out to me to say there is one superhero he wants to play…Ghost Rider.”

A horror-centric hero that was previously played by Nicolas Cage in two feature films before a television incarnation that appeared on Agents of SHIELD before a spinoff series at Hulu was snuffed out.

It’s unclear if Gosling has met with Marvel for anything recently but given the fan demand to see him join the MCU and the return of Ghost Rider, we shouldn’t be surprised if the studio at least speaks to him at some point. You might remember that before Mahershala Ali was announced as the new Blade, the Oscar-winning actor was the one who brought up playing the vampire hunter in a reboot to Marvel in a meeting and seemed to convince them.

Speaking of Blade, Marvel entering their era of exploring horror characters means that the return of Ghost Rider is only a matter of time.

Russo Brothers Still “Open” To MCU Return & Comment On Tackling Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot

The Russo Brothers have been behind directing four major Marvel Studios releases Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Giving the studio a combined global box office total of $6.7 billion and some of the biggest hits the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had, so far.

Having the Russos return is certainly in the cards given their success.

You might remember back when the drama between Disney brass and actress Scarlett Johansson over money in the wake of Black Widow being released last year when the Russo Brothers were revealed to have been in talks with the studio to return for a mystery project. Despite talking up the idea of getting their hands on the new Wolverine or adapting a huge crossover event like Secret Wars, we still don’t know for sure what exactly they would direct if they’d come back to the MCU.

While speaking with the Associated Press (See video interview below), they were asked about returning and also potentially tackling their highly-anticipated X-Men reboot. Joe Russo, of course, reminds us he has a copy of the Hulk comic where Wolverine made his first appearance and suggested once Kevin Feige was ready to pursue an X-Men film, they’d be game to be involved in shaping a new take on the mutant team.

“Wolverine being so essential to the ‘X-Men,’ of course, that would be a fun project to work on and find a new way into it. But I do think that’s probably something [Kevin Fegie] has rightfully put aside for a while to introduce some new characters to the world and bring that back when it’s ready.”

The duo isn’t hurting for project ideas, they’re about to release the massive Netflix action flick The Gray Man this month and are already set to bring their sci-fi film The Electric State, starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) to Netflix. Also, there are early plans to make a direct sequel to The Gray Man and a spinoff prequel featuring Chris Evans’ character, Lloyd Hansen. Not to mention other things like a live-action film based on the anime Battle of The Planets and a remake of The Thomas Crown Affair with Michael B. Jordan attached in the lead role.

On the X-Men front, it seems that Shawn Levy’s Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds is the only big mutant project the studio is ready to confirm at the moment. However, between announcements incoming at San Diego Comic-Con later this month and D23 Expo in September, we could learn about Phase 5 and X-Men plans very soon.

Brtish actor Taron Egerton had recently stated he’d be keen to play the new Wolverine incarnation after revealing he’s met with Marvel Studios for an unnamed role/project.
