Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Taps Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich & More As Filming Begins On The WWII Drama

Filming on Christopher Nolan’s next movie has begun, as his WWII drama Oppenheimer will focus on J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb for the U.S. military that was unleashed on Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing thousands and in the process ending the war.

The high-profile project has added even more interesting names.

The latest additions to the call-sheet include Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Quaid, and David Krumholtz.

They join a stacked cast that already consists of Cillian Murphy playing the titular Oppenheimer alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, and Matthew Modine.

It’ll be interesting to see if Christopher Nolan will attempt to document the Pacific War and the Japanese side of the story along with the civilians that were essentially erased from the planet as part of a power move by the United States to end the bloody South Pacific campaign with an extreme show of force before having to invade the mainland of Japan. It was one of the darkest moments in human history.

However, hiring a mostly all-white group of actors would suggest they’ll only be coming from allies’ perspective of the war.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema will reunite with Nolan after working on, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet along with Oscar-winning Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (Tenet, Black Panther, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) being part of the crew.

Universal Pictures will release Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023.

Marvel Updates: ‘Doctor Strange 2,’ ‘Moon Knight,’ ‘Echo,’ ‘Secret Invasion,’ ‘Loki,’ Netflix Shows, ‘Kraven’ & ‘Morbius’

We’re bringing back the Marvel Updates and have a few tidbits to share.

DOCTOR STRANGE 2: After a previous denial of his involvement, actor Patrick Stewart was shocked that fans recognized his voice in the latest Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness trailer when he didn’t, essentially confirming his involvement on the film to the YouTube channel Jake’s Takes.

This comes after Ryan Reynolds has downplayed fan rumblings of his appearance as the foul-mouthed mutant Deadpool during a red carpet chat with Variety.

The Doctor Strange sequel hits theaters on May 6th.

ECHO: The upcoming Hawkeye spinoff series starring Alaqua Cox as the dear comic book character is said to be shooting between April and August in the Atlanta area, thanks to a casting call from Central Casting seeking First Nations/Indigenous actors.

SECRET INVASION: Set photos from Secret Invasion posted on Instagram seem to confirm that Don Cheadle’s War Machine is expected to appear ahead of his solo series Armor Wars and that character actor Dermot Mulroney is playing President Ritson on the show.

You can see the two actors together in a newspaper found on the set (sixth image).

LOKI: The second season of Loki has added Moon Knight directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, according to A potential sign that Marvel Studios has been very happy with their work on the latest live-action Disney+ series.

[Deadline]

NETFLIX SHOWS: Disney finally confirmed officially that Daredevil, The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders are coming to Disney+ on March 16th alongside new parental controls allowing for future mature content to be added to the family-friendly streaming service.

ABC’s Agents of SHIELD is also part of the lineup heading to Disney+.

While the main Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen the use of Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson fisk in Hawkeye, it’s unclear if any or all characters will be getting a similar treatment in the near future.

MOON KNIGHT: At the end of the month we’ll see the debut of Oscar Isaac’s Moon Knight series on Disney+ and some new posters have been revealed online, including one of Isaac as Mr. Knight and the Korean poster looks like the cover of a Moon Knight comic book.

Check out the posters below.

On to updates for Sony’s own cinematic universe.

KRAVEN THE HUNTER: Filming on Sony’s Kraven spinoff is finally coming together as Aaron Taylor is getting some company on the call-sheet with Fred Hechinger (White Lotus) playing Kraven’s shape-shifting half-brother The Chameleon and Oscar-nominated actress Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) is taking on the role of voodoo priestess Calypso.

Kraven, directed by JC Chandor will be released in theaters on January 13, 2023, barring any more slate changes from Sony.

[Deadline]

MORBIUS: As Sony is about to release their latest Spider-Man franchise spinoff on April 1st, they’ve revealed a new trailer focusing mainly on the digital special effects of Michael Morbius’ vampire powers, which is a little bit of a mess if I’m honest.

Check out the final trailer below.

Netflix Announces They’re Developing Live-Action ‘BioShock’ Movie

After a failed attempt from director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of The Caribbean Trilogy, The Ring) to make a feature film based on the beloved sci-fi horror video game BioShock at Universal Pictures, Netflix has announced they’ll be attempting a new live-action film with the help of 2K and Take-Two Interactive. However, they don’t mention anyone who is writing or directing the project.

BioShock takes place in Rapture, a large underwater city planned and constructed in the 1940s by individualist business magnate Andrew Ryan, who wanted to create a utopia for society’s elite to flourish outside of government control and “petty morality”.

If they’re not able to get Verbinski back, it’s hard not to see how Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro (Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water) couldn’t be the best person to bring this art deco world to life. Given that the filmmaker has been working closely with the streaming giant on multiple television projects and is the home of his upcoming stop-motion animation pic based on the classic fairytale, Pinocchio.

Below is the official press release from Netflix on the exciting news.

Netflix is partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a live-action film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.

Published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the award-winning and critically-acclaimed BioShock game franchise includes BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharpshooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation. Across the titles’ original releases as well as multiple re-releases, remastered editions and bundled collections, BioShock has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, and is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and beloved series in all of gaming. The next installment is currently in development by Cloud Chamber.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ Poster Confirms Live-Action Captain Carter Is Coming

Yesterday, Marvel Studios kept fans on their toes with a brand new trailer for Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. The new footage featured big reveals such as Lashana Lynch playing Maria Rambeau variant of Captain Marvel, the voice of Patrick Stweart as a Professor X variant (bringing X-Men into the MCU), and a possible tease of The Savage Land (The location of Ka-Zar and dinosaurs hidden in Antarctica).

Well, the film’s new poster also has confirmed a long-standing rumor for the newest MCU installment.

Hayley Atwell played a variant of Captain America in the animated series What If…? as the series dealt with the Multiverse plenty of fans assumed she would appear in the Doctor Strange sequel. That has been confirmed as we’ve spotted Captain Carter’s shield with the British Union Jack on it is clearly on the bottom right hand corner of the new poster.

Does that mean Atwell is 100% in the role? Time will tell.

More online rumblings have suggested every Marvel character in existence could appear in the film, but we have to assume the group is going to be much more narrow than that given we need an actual film, not just fan-service cameos.

Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness debuts in theaters on May 6th.

In Marvel Studios’ “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stühlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. The film is directed by Sam Raimi, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Eric Hauserman Carroll and Jamie Christopher serve as executive producers. The screenplay was written by Michael Waldron.

‘Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power’: The Second Age of Middle-Earth Revealed With Amazon Series First-Look Trailer

After an extensive in-depth look at Amazon’s billion-dollar series set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s iconic fantasy world of Middle-Earth with Vanity Fair’s preview, the streaming giant has launched the first-look footage with a trailer for Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power.

The show takes place in the Second Age, many many years before the Peter Jackson films that took place in the Third Age. Established characters in the show include Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), Isildur (Maxim Baldry), and The Dark Lord Sauron is expected to be the looming threat as he is the “Lord” referred to in the title.

Sauron with the help of Elf smith Celebrimbor created and gifted the Rings of Power.

Amazon Studios’ forthcoming series brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness. Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

The Rings of Power will debut on September 2nd.

New ‘Doctor Strange 2’ Trailer Teases X-Men & Possibly The Savage Land Too

Director Sam Raimi returns to the world of Marvel Comics with Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, further exploring The Multiverse after things like Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home has introduced audiences to the idea of variants alongside many different universes within the established Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The new trailer released during the Super Bowl might confirm some previous rumors about the Doctor Strange sequel.

Doctor Strange seemingly meets a variant of Professor X played by Patrick Stewart, as his voice is unmistakably used in the trailer saying “We should tell him the truth.” Is the Illuminati going to a version of the TVA in the film?

But, that might not be the only X-Men-related tease in this new footage.

We see a glimpse of a T-Rex in a quick shot that might be teasing The Savage Land, a location like Madripoor that has connections to the X-Men comic books.

Once upon a time, Marvel Studios was trying to develop a Ka-Zar movie focused on a Tarzan-like superhero that lives in the Savage Land. The X-Men location is hidden from the world in Antarctica and has all sorts of creatures living there including dinosaurs.

The Doctor Strange sequel will debut on May 6th.

Halle Berry Confirms Sofia Won’t Return For ‘John Wick 4’ & Teases A Possible Spinoff Movie

While there are a lot of returning cast members from the John Wick franchise appearing in John Wick 4, Halle Berry’s badass character Sofia won’t be reuniting with Keanu Reeves in the upcoming installment.

Berry is on the promotional rounds for her directorial debut Bruised, a Netflix sports drama seeing the actress play an MMA fighter. She revealed to IGN during an interview that while Sofia won’t be showing up in the next film, a spinoff film could be in the cards.

“There could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy,” Berry told IGN.

Lionsgate has yet to announce plans for a Sofia movie and this could be a new revelation from Berry.

John Wick spinoffs are already in the works with the prequel series The Continental at Starz, and a feature film called Ballerina led by Cuban actress Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049, No Time To Die) with director Len Wiseman (Live Free r Die Hard, Underworld) behind the camera.

You might remember that during the Pierce Brosnan era of the James Bond franchise, her character Jinx from Die Another Day was supposed to land a spinoff film, but that ultimately never happened as producers focused on rebooting 007 with Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale.

John Wick 4 was recently bumped to a release date of March 24, 2023.

‘Madame Web’: Dakota Johnson To Star In Sony’s Upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff Film

Sony Pictures is behind a multitude of spinoff feature films set within their own Marvel Comics cinematic universe with Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Kraven The Hunter, and a Spider-Woman project from director Olivia Wilde (Booksmart). Another spinoff has landed a star to lead it.

Deadline reports that actress Dakota Johnson has been selected to play the mysterious Madame Web in a solo spinoff that is directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders) from a script penned by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless.

Plot details are being kept under lock and key for the moment.

Madame Web was a supernatural character, not unlike Doctor Strange, from the pages of the Spider-Man comics and had abilities to show Peter Parker different realities, she was also connected to a version of the Multiverse in the 1990s animated series. There is a good shot since she doesn’t have any standout villains that she could be navigating the Spider-Verse/Multiverse.

Johnson joins Tom Hardy (Venom), Jared Leto (Morbius), and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven) in Sony’s splinter universe that may or may not crossover directly with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to the box office success of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

There is still an expectation that Wilde’s Spider-Woman is moving forward, but it’s been a while since there has been a concrete update on that one. Kraven The Hunter is expected to be the next big Sony/Marvel project to go in front of cameras with J.C. Chandor (Triple Frontier) set to direct.

The superhero project has yet to get an official release date from the studio.

Bong Joon Ho Returning To Sci-Fi With Off-World Colonization Pic Starring Robert Pattinson For Warner Bros.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho got a bunch of awards for his fantastic dark comedy Parasite, however, is reportedly returning to the sci-fi genre for a new project at Warner Bros. and will see him tackle an off-world setting.

Deadline has revealed that the new sci-fi movie will be adapted from the upcoming novel Mickey7 written by Edward Ashton.

It centers on a man on an expedition to colonize the ice world Niflheim.

The good news doesn’t stop there as British actor Robert Pattinson is attached for a lead role. Pattinson will play Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ new film The Batman which will hit theaters in March, expected to launch a new trilogy for Warner Bros. with Reeves shepherding it.

It’s unclear at this time if the untitled film will have a mostly western cast or will include South Korean actors that have worked with the director in the past. We can assume it’ll be a mix of the two.

Bong Joon Ho’s previous films such as Snowpiercer, Okja, and The Host have explored the sci-fi genre.
