After a failed attempt from director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of The Caribbean Trilogy, The Ring) to make a feature film based on the beloved sci-fi horror video game BioShock at Universal Pictures, Netflix has announced they’ll be attempting a new live-action film with the help of 2K and Take-Two Interactive. However, they don’t mention anyone who is writing or directing the project.
BioShock takes place in Rapture, a large underwater city planned and constructed in the 1940s by individualist business magnate Andrew Ryan, who wanted to create a utopia for society’s elite to flourish outside of government control and “petty morality”.
If they’re not able to get Verbinski back, it’s hard not to see how Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro (Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water) couldn’t be the best person to bring this art deco world to life. Given that the filmmaker has been working closely with the streaming giant on multiple television projects and is the home of his upcoming stop-motion animation pic based on the classic fairytale, Pinocchio.
Below is the official press release from Netflix on the exciting news.
