‘Argylle’ Trailer: Matthew Vaughn Returns This February With A Twisted Star-Studded Take On The Spy Genre

It looks like the cat is finally out of the bag. The writer Elly Conway is indeed a fictional character and didn’t actually write the new spy film “Argylle” from director Matthew Vaughn (“Layer Cake”) as Universal Pictures and Apple Studios have released the first-look trailer for the upcoming action-comedy revealing the film’s main twist. What Conway (played by Bryce Dallas Howard) writes in her series of spy novels has an odd way of actually happening in the real world which has now caught the attention of various good and bad folks within the spy community including Sam Rockwell‘s Aiden.

Also revealed in the trailer is that the characters played by Henry Cavill and John Cena are actually from her books, and remains to be seen if they’ll ultimately be making the jump to reality. Changes are good though. “Argylle” seems to mix adventure, supernatural, and comedic elements something alien to Vaughn’s second film, “Stardust.” But with a bit of “Romancing The Stone” and “Knight & Day” thrown into the blender.

Another wild tidbit is that the new film hilariously features the real-life cat of Vaughn’s supermodel wife, Claudia Schiffer.

Here is the official logline of the film via Universal:

The greater the spy, the bigger the lie. From the twisted mind of Matthew Vaughn (“Kingsman” franchise, “Kick-Ass”) comes “Argylle” a razor-witted, reality-bending, globe-encircling spy thriller. Bryce Dallas Howard (“Jurassic World” franchise) is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Oscar® winner Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. The top-flight ensemble cast features Henry Cavill (“The Witcher”), John Cena (“Fast X”), Oscar® winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Grammy-winning pop superstar Dua Lipa (“Barbie”), Emmy winner and Oscar® nominee Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Emmy winner and comedy icon Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Sofia Boutella (“Kingsman: The Secret Service”), and the legendary Samuel L. Jackson. Alfie is played by Chip, the real-life cat of supermodel Claudia Vaughn (née Schiffer). Argylle is directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn, from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs (“Wonder Woman”).

There’s been chatter about the film potentially becoming a franchise starter for Apple and could lead to multiple installments given the main crux of the film is that Elly can predict various missions and their outcomes. Also, the staggering $200 million Apple reportedly paid to secure the film. Perhaps, she ends up choosing a side or an organization by the end of the film.

“Argylle” will be heading to theaters on February 2 and you can watch that new trailer below.

EXCLUSIVE: Henry Cavill Spy Flick ‘Argylle’ Using Working Title ‘Tartan’ & Hires ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ VFX Supervisor

Matthew Vaughn’s next feature film made some big headlines over the summer when it was revealed, Argylle, had been reportedly picked-up by Apple for hefty $200 million.

Not only that, but the spy flick’s impressive cast would include Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Man of Steel), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards), Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion), Bryan Cranston (Godzilla, Breaking Bad), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, SCTV, Schitt’s Creek), John Cena (Bumblebee, F9: The Fast Saga, Peacemaker, The Suicide Squad), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained, Secret Invasion, The Marvels), and singer Dua Lipa making her acting debut.

The Ronin can update with some exclusive production updates such as the working title being Tartan during the film’s London area shoot and that they’ve added visual effects supervisor Jody Johnson (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Rush, In The Heart of The Sea) to the massive action flick’s production team.

Previously, we first revealed the film’s title along with multiple reports confirming key crew members such as cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Rocketman, Eddie The Eagle), production designer Daniel Taylor (Tetris), and costume designer Stephanie Collie (Layer Cake, Silent Night, Hellboy, Peaky Blinders).

Argylle is based on the upcoming novel by Ellie Conway with a script from Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Pan).

It’s expected to debut sometime in 2022 as suggested in official teaser posters.

Apple is also behind the big Napoleon Bonaparte historical epic Kitbag from director Ridley Scott film with a cast already consisting of Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix and Jodie Comer. They’re working with director Martin Scorsese on his upcoming thriller Killers of The Flower Moon (said to have wrapped production), which will likely help Apple become a strong awards contender.

The next film from Matthew Vaughn will be the Kingsman franchise prequel The King’s Man that will hit theaters on December 22, which explores the origins of the secretive British spy agency.

‘Argylle’: Apple Buying Matthew Vaughn’s New Spy Movie Starring Henry Cavill For $200M

A while back, Netflix made headlines when they spent an obscene amount of money to secure the global rights to Rian Johnson’s next two Knives Out sequels starring Daniel Craig. Well, it looks like Apple is jumping into the blockbuster game themselves as Deadline reports that they’ve spent $200 million to land Matthew Vaughn’s new spy project Argylle.

Argylle is based on the upcoming novel by Ellie Conway with a script from Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Pan).

It will star Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Man of Steel), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards), Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion), Bryan Cranston (Godzilla, Breaking Bad), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, SCTV, Schitt’s Creek, John Cena (Bumblebee, F9: The Fast Saga), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained), and singer Dua Lipa making her acting debut.

While Apple is reportedly only buying the single installment, it’s been said that Vaughn expects the movie to be expanded into a trilogy.

In theory, Argylle could give Apple their own spy franchise as their director competitor Amazon is looking to acquire Bond production partner MGM Studios and will likely attempt to expand that franchise for streaming projects beyond the feature films.

The Ronin first revealed that the title for Matthew Vaughn’s next flick would be titled Argylle (originally we thought it was a working title) along with confirmations that the film’s production team would consist of cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Rocketman, Eddie The Eagle), production designer Daniel Taylor (Tetris), and costume designer Stephanie Collie (Layer Cake, Silent Night, Hellboy, Peaky Blinders).

Argylle is expected to be released sometime in 2022, but it’s unknown if Apple will pursue a traditional theatrical release or keep it as simply a Apple TV+ exclusive. The latter is assumed though.

Apple is also behind the big Napoleon Bonaparte historical epic Kitbag from director Ridley Scott film with a cast to include Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix and Jodie Comer. They’re working with Martin Scorsese on his upcoming thriller Killers of The Flower Moon, which will likely give Apple a strong awards contender.

‘Flash Gordon’: Taika Waititi’s Animated Film At 20th Century Studios Pivots To Live-Action

A new Flash Gordon movie has been in the works at 20th Century for ages with two different versions previously in development stages with directors Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust, X-Men: First Class) and Julius Avery (Overlord) assigned to the project at various points.

Flash Gordon is a pulp sci-fi hero that helped inspire George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise as Han Solo is directly connected to characters like Flash and Buck Rogers. A comic strip hero that debuted in 1937 with many live-action/animated incarnations with a string of serials and a campy film that released in 1980 that included music from Queen.

In the wake of 20th Century’s merger with Disney, Julius Avery’s incarnation was placed on ice and it was later announced that director Taika Waititi would be tackling an animated movie version of Flash Gordon by writing and directing it. However, producer John Davis has spoken to Collider revealing that Taika is currently writing it and has changed his mind wanting to do a live-action movie instead. He didn’t really give a timeline though or when they expect Waititi will be available to shoot it.

“Taika is writing it. It was a movie that was a huge influence on him growing up. It is one of his favorite movies. He initially said to me, ‘Let’s do it animated.’ I said, ‘Okay.’ Then we got into it and started developing it and he said, ‘No, let’s do it live-action.’ I said, ‘Even better,'” John Davis told Collider of Taika’s pivot to live-action with Flash Gordon.

Disney/20th Century certainly lucked-out nabbing the director as watching Thor: Ragnaok it’s hard not to notice that tone and visuals were most likely inspired by the 1980 movie.

Waititi only recently wrapped on Thor: Love & Thunder and is expected to direct a new Star Wars film for Lucasfilm in the near future alongside other films, but it’s possible that Flash Gordon could be the next big thing given how quickly he shoots these projects. He had once been attached to make a movie based on the manga Akira for Warner Bros., but he’s seemingly won’t be doing that.

I’ll continue to keep my fingers crossed that the studio and Taika will consider Black Panther franchise actor Winston Duke as the new Flash Gordon, given the actor’s stature fits the role perfectly and someone like Chris Hemsworth would be a little redundant since his Thor incarnation is essentially Flash now.

FLASH GORDON – Prepare to save the universe with the King of the Impossible! Alex Raymond’s famous comic strip blasts to life in the timeless sci-fi cult adventure Flash Gordon! When energy waves pull the moon out of orbit, New York Jets quarterback Flash Gordon unwittingly finds himself heading for the planet Mongo, where – with assistance from beautiful Dale Arden – he’ll take on Ming the Merciless and rescue humankind.

‘Argylle’: Matthew Vaughn Confirmed To Reunite With ‘Layer Cake’ Costume Designer Stephanie Collie

We first revealed the title for Matthew Vaughn’s (Kingsman 1-2, X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass) upcoming high-profile spy film Argylle alongside production team that will include cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3, Tomb Raider, Eddie The Eagle) and production designer Daniel Taylor (Tetris).

Argylle’s epic cast so far reportedly includes Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Man of Steel), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards), Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion), Bryan Cranston (Godzilla, Breaking Bad), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, SCTV, Schitt’s Creek), John Cena (Bumblebee, F9: The Fast Saga), and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained).

The Ronin can confirm that director Matthew Vaughn will indeed reunite with costume designer Stephanie Collie (Silent Night, Hellboy, Peaky Blinders), who he hasn’t worked with since his directorial debut Layer Cake that released back in 2004. The humorous crime film was notably Daniel Craig’s big solo outing before landing the James Bond role in Casino Royale and even had the actor pretending to play 007 when he was being shown a collection of guns. You’ll also spot a very young Tom Hardy as well.

LAYER CAKE – An unnamed mid-level cocaine dealer (Daniel Craig) in London makes plans to step away from the criminal life. Before he can cut ties, the dealer’s supplier Jimmy Price (Kenneth Cranham) draws him into a complicated pair of jobs involving kidnapping the teenage daughter of a rival gangster (Michael Gambon) and brokering the purchase of a large shipment of ecstasy pills from a dealer known as “the Duke” (Jamie Foreman), leading to a series of elaborate double-crosses from all corners.

I would argue that Layer Cake might be Vaughn’s best film. It also had a lot of custom-made suits and more stylish causal wear worn by the Duke’s crew, Collie has a fantastic eye for men’s wear.

Collie also worked with Guy Ritchie on Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (produced by Vaughn) and his recently reunion with Jason Statham on the armored truck thriller Wrath of Man.

Production is expected to take place in England and Europe.

A distributor and release date have yet to be announced for Argylle. It’s said to be the first installment of a trilogy.

Henry Cavill Returns To Spy Genre With Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Argylle’; Bryan Cranston, John Cena & More Join Too

Matthew Vaughn’s next feature film Argylle is officially a go!

A while back, The Ronin first revealed that the title for Vaughn’s flick would be Argylle (originally we thought it was a working title) along with confirmations that the film’s production team would consist of cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Rocketman, Eddie The Eagle) and production designer Daniel Taylor (Tetris).

Deadline has now revealed/confirmed the full cast after a handful of names from the cast were revealed yesterday by Observer.

The spy flick based on the upcoming novel by Ellie Conway will star Henry Cavill (The Witcher, Man of Steel), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Moon, Seven Psychopaths, Three Billboards), Bryce Dallas Howard (Black Mirror, Jurassic World, Jurassic World: Dominion), Bryan Cranston (Godzilla, Breaking Bad), Catherine O’Hara (Home Alone, SCTV, Schitt’s Creek, John Cena (Bumblebee, F9: The Fast Saga), and Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained).

This will be a return for Cavill to the spy genre after taking roles in Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E and playing a villain in Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout opposite franchise star Tom Cruise.

Director Matthew Vaughn will be reuniting with Cavill after working with him on his second feature film Stardust and more recently worked with Jackson on Kingsman: The Secret Service.

Conway’s novel follows the world’s greatest spy, Argylle, as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.

Here is the character information from the Observer.

Bryce Dallas Howard is in talks to star in the lead role. Tricked into thinking she’s a writer, her lethal skills return with her memories, setting her down a path of revenge against the shadowy organization she used to work for, the Division. Also in talks to star are Sam Rockwell as a former Division agent and our heroine’s love interest, and Samuel L. Jackson as a rogue agent dedicated to exposing the corruption within the clandestine spy network.

Singer Dua Lipa will also make her acting debut in the project and teased a release in 2022 alongside a teaser poster.

Argylle is said to be the first of a planned trilogy.

We were previously able to confirm filming will be taking place in London as Deadline adds filming begins this August.

Giant Freaking Robot first dished on early plot details.

Matthew Vaughn’s Spy Film ‘Argyle’ Reportedly In Talks To Add Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell & Samuel L. Jackson

A while back, The Ronin first revealed that Matthew Vaughn’s (The King’s Man) next feature film would be using the working title Argyle along with confirmations that the film’s production team would consist of cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Rocketman, Eddie The Eagle) and production designer Daniel Taylor (Tetris).

I had recently been able to confirm production would be mainly taking place in the London area.

Well, now Observer is reporting that MARV Films is currently in talks to add Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World, Black Mirror, Spider-Man 3), Sam Rockwell (Iron Man 2, Three Billboards, Jojo Rabbit, Moon), and Samuel L. Jackson (Captain Marvel, The Avengers, Secret Invasion, Spider-Man: Far From Home).

However, the trio admittedly haven’t closed deals and might not ultimately join the pic but the likelihood is good.

Samuel L. Jackson’s Marvel series Secret Invasion will be filming in the United Kingdom and Sam Rockwell’s Justin Hammer is expected to appear as a key figure in Don Cheadle’s Armor Wars series as well (Hammer featured in the Marvel Comics source material). It’s worth mentioning that commitments to the those Marvel shows could possibly conflict with Argyle’s shooting schedule.

Giant Freaking Robot was the first outlet to report details on the film.

Vaughn’s latest film The King’s Man will be released by Disney in December and there are still expectations that Kingsman 3 will be shooting in the near future, wrapping up the Eggsy/Harry Hart trilogy.

EXCLUSIVE: Matthew Vaughn’s Next Feature Film Enlists ‘Tetris’ Production Designer Daniel Taylor & ‘Fantastic Beasts 3’ Cinematographer George Richmond

The Ronin can confirm that Matthew Vaughn as hired Tetris production designer Daniel Taylor for next feature film at MARV Films, which is going under the working tile Argyle (all MARV Films projects use working titles giving a nod to the tailoring/clothing trade).

Matthew Vaughn has been notably been involved with comic book adaptations such as X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass, Kingsman 1-2, and the upcoming Kingsman origin flick The King’s Man.

Daniel Taylor joins a production team that already has cinematographer George Richmond (Fantastic Beasts 3) on the roster, who we previously confirmed for the new project. Richmond worked on Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the Elton John biopic Rocketman, and the sports comedy Edddie The Eagle.

The pair recently worked with MARV Films biopic about the creation of the iconic video game Tetris, which stars British actor Taron Egerton (Kingsman 1-2, Rocketman, Eddie The Eagle).

A rumor from Giant Freaking Robot, suggests the film is a spy project. However, we cannot confirm those details or the potential casting information they are sharing in the report.

EXCLUSIVE: Director Matthew Vaughn’s Next Film Will Be ‘Argyle’ For MARV Films

The Ronin has learned that British director Matthew Vaughn’s next feature film is using the title Argyle and will be setup at his production company MARV Films. Sadly, details are scarce on the new movie but is expected to begin production before the end of the year. We have to assume filming will take place in the United Kingdom.

Vaughn’s directorial credits include the Daniel Craig gangster film Layer Cake, Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, and the upcoming prequel The King’s Man formerly known as Kingsman: The Great Game.

MARV is also behind films such as the sports comedy Eddie The Eagle, the Elton John film Rocketman, and they had a hand with the last Fantastic Four movie. The studio’s latest projects include a Christmas movie titled Silent Night starring Jojo Rabbit’s Roman Griffin Davis and Keira Knightley along with a Tetris biopic that stars Taron Egerton.

There have been plans in the works for a third Kingsman movie as MARV’s Zygi Kamasa has teased multiple projects set in the Kingsman universe are in the works such as a television series and seven more films.

In 2018, Vaughn told Empire Magazine he was planning on rebooting Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl.

At one time, Vaughn had been attached to studio projects such as the spy flick I Am Pilgrim for MGM Studios based on the Terry Hayes novel, a feature adaptation of Mark Millar’s Superior, and a new incarnation of swashbuckling sci-fi hero Flash Gordon for 20th Century Studios before he was replaced with Overlord’s Julius Avery.

Argyle will reunite Matthew Vaughn with cinematographer George Richmond, who has been working on the Warner Bros. Potterverse sequel Fantastic Beasts 3 and the upcoming sci-fi action comedy Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds.

MARV productions tend to use tailoring terms (Matthew Vaughn has a soft-spot for Huntsman tailors of Savile Row) for working titles, so, it’s possible Argyle isn’t going to be the film’s final title.

After multiple release delays due to the pandemic, The King’s Man will hit theaters on December 22.
