Christoph Waltz Joins Cast Of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Movie Alongside Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth & Oscar Isaac

During a chat with Collider, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro‘s has revealed that two-time Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Christoph Waltz has joined the cast of his upcoming retelling of the iconic sci-fi horror story, “Frankenstein.” Waltz is likely best known to audiences for working alongside director Quentin Tarantino in the period action films “Django Unchained” and “The Inglourious Basterds.” A film that del Toro says he’s been trying to make for 50 years but now believes he’s “crazy or brave” enough to attempt it now.

The actor joins a cast that already boasts talent such as Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina”), Mia Goth (“Infinity Pool,” “Pearl”), and Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”).

Frankenstein | Book by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Bernie Wrightson, Stephen King | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster

You might remember that a while back when Universal was trying to resurrect the Universal Monsters franchise, an attempt was made by del Toro to get a new “Frankenstein” move off the ground there but ultimately that didn’t happen. Luckily, for the filmmaker since the story is from the Mary Shelley novel published back in 1818 and is in the public domain, he was free to try again at Netflix but would have to come up with his own Frankenstein design that doesn’t infringe the one copyrighted design by Universal Pictures.

There is now an assumption the design del Toro has landed on is from the late comic book artist Bernie Wrightson, who himself did illustrations for a version of the Frankenstein story (pictured in the above header image). His version of Dr. Frankenstein is the spitting image of Oscar Isaac, which could suggest that’s the role he’s been cast in. Wrightson also helped co-create DC Comics anti-hero “Swamp Thing,” a character that del Toro nearly put on the big screen in his incarnation of the “Dark Justice League” before he eventually moved on to other things.

Another tidbit about production was revealed too as they hope to get cameras rolling sometime in February, but likely will rely on the actors’ strike being resolved in the near future by the AMPTP offering/accepting a fair deal with the union.

Guillermo won an Oscar statue earlier this year for his other Netflix feature film, “Pinocchio.” And previously earned two other Oscars for “The Shape of Water” such as Best Picture and Best Director back in 2018, the filmmaker’s take on “The Creature From The Black Lagoon.”

Quentin Tarantino Teases Comedic Spaghetti Western Project That Features A German Sheriff

While Quentin Tarantino is busy writing his second book and trying to get his Bounty Law series made, a spinoff of hit film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, focusing on the Rick Dalton western show. He’s again musing about tackling Kill Bill 3, something he’s been talking about for ages but remains to be seen if it’ll actually be his final feature film (will retire after directing ten films).

While in Italy Tarantino is teasing a new idea.

“But first I want to make a comedy,” the filmmaker told Italian broadcaster Fabio Fazio (via Variety) that he’s got a comedy project he wants to do. However, it’s unclear if this is a project meant for film or television.

Speaking further with Rome Film Festival chief Antonio Monda, Quentin Tarantino teased about a Spaghetti Western (Italian-made western film) that sounds like that might have a role waiting for two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained).

“It’s not like my next movie. It’s a piece of something else that I’m thinking about doing — and I’m not going to describe what it is. But part of this thing, there is supposed to be a Spaghetti Western in it. I’m looking forward to shooting that [thing] because it’s going to be really fun. Because I want to shoot it in the Spaghetti Western style where everybody’s speaking a different language.”

“The Mexican Bandido is an Italian; the hero is an American; the bad sheriff is a German; the Mexican saloon girl is Israeli. And everybody is speaking a different language. And you [the actors] just know: OK, when he’s finished talking then I can talk.”

It’s unclear if he’s referring to the Bounty Law project potentially covering Rick Dalton’s faux Spaghetti Western films from Once Upon A Time In Hollywood such as Nebraska Jim directed by Sergio Corbuuci and Kill Me Now Ringo, Said the Gringo.

Both got mock-up posters for the film’s release.

Corbucci is a very real Italian director who helmed Django, The Great Silence, Navajo Joe, Minnesota Clay (referenced with the salon in Django Unchained), The Mercenary, The Specialists, and Ringo & His Golden Pistol. A filmmaker that obviously influenced his love of the genre alongside Sergio Leone.

However, it’s been assumed that Bounty Law would be more like giving us episodes of the show rather than a continuation of Dalton’s acting career. This might suggest that this germ of an idea might be something completely different altogether.

‘Dead For A Dollar’: Christoph Waltz To Play Another Bounty Hunter Opposite Willem Dafoe In New Western Thriller From Director Walter Hill

Another interesting project is assembling at the Cannes Film Market, as Deadline reports that writer/director Walter Hill (48 Hours, Red Heat, The Warriors, The Driver) is putting together a western called Dead For A Dollar that will see Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz playing another bounty hunter after playing on in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. The western will also see Willem Dafoe (John Wick, The Lighthouse) play someone that Waltz’s bounty hunter had sent to prison years ago.

The outlet added an extensive plot synopsis for Dead For A Dollar’s script that was penned by Hill and Matt Harris, which you can read below but might have a handful of spoilers.

Dead For A Dollar is set in New Mexico Territory, Chihuahua, during 1897. The story will follow Max Borlund (Waltz), a famed bounty hunter, hired to find and return Rachel Price, the politically progressive wife of Nathan Price, a successful Santa Fe businessman. Max is told she has been kidnapped by an African American army deserter, Elijah Jones, and is being held for ransom in Mexico. When Max goes south of the border he soon runs across his sworn enemy, expatriate American Joe Cribbens (Dafoe), a professional gambler, sometime outlaw, who Max had tracked down and sent to prison years before. When Borlund finds Rachel Price and Elijah hiding deep in the wilds of the Mexican desert, he discovers that Rachel has willingly fled from an abusive husband, and the runaway soldier is, in fact, her romantic partner. Max is now faced with a dilemma: does he return the wife back across the border to the man who hired him, or does he aid Rachel’s bid for freedom and fight off ruthless hired guns and his long-time criminal rival, Joe Cribbens?

The title an obvious nod to Sergio Leone’s iconic Dollars Trilogy, the trio of films was landmark work in the spaghetti western sub-genre.

Walter Hill as a writer worked on Alien (uncredited), Aliens, Alien 3, The Warriors, Red Heat, 48 Hours, The Driver, and Another 48 Hours.
