RUMOR: Crew Jacket May Confirm Red Hulk Showing Up In ‘Captain America 4’

Take the following with a pinch of salt, but some images that showed up recently on Reddit claim to reveal Red Hulk will indeed show up in Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World.” The unverified image seems to include what is most likely a crew wrap gift jacket (A common practice that cast/crew are gifted a memento for their time working on the production) with a giant monstrous red hand grabbing the iconic hero’s shield and could confirm the character is in the fourth installment. The anti-hero Hulk persona is best known as connected to Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in both comics and the animated series “Agents of S.M.A.S.H.,” who is now played by Harrison Ford after taking over the role from the late William Hurt.

Harrison Ford on Captain America 4 Set: Let's Shoot This Piece of Shit

Red Hulk showing up in these upcoming movies isn’t some new revelation, surprise, or even considered a spoiler as Thunderbolt Ross, expected to be President Ross in both “Captain America 4” and “Thunderbolts,” nearly transformed into the red hulking brute in “Captain America: Civil War” as The Russo Brothers have mentioned that was an unused idea that was kicking around back when Hurt was still in the role. So, in theory, it was only a matter of time before Red Hulk would be showing up (An official set photo seen above teased Ross’ tattered clothing from a transformation) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because that’s how these things work now. Ross is only one of many “Incredible Hulk” characters making their return such as Dr. Samuel Sterns and his daughter Betty, so having a Hulk underpinning story element is far from shocking. Ford stepped into the Thunderbolt Ross part, and there had been a longstanding expectation that they were bringing Ross back to ultimately make his jump to Red Hulk, a version of the Hulk where Ross has more control of his powers similar to Smart/Professor Hulk and Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. Basically, giving Ross what he’s been ultimately pursuing with a military application of Dr. Bruce Banner’s power-set.

Also, it should be clear that if the Red Hulk nod is indeed part of a crew wrap gift Marvel Studios would have known this would have made its way online and likely wouldn’t be much of a spoiler as it’ll be all over promotional materials. Even if this would be earlier than they likely would have wanted. It’s worth mentioning there has been chatter that “Brave New World” is expected to be undergoing extensive reshoots, and all this could change depending on those new scenes being rewritten by Matthew Orton (“Moon Knight,” “Operation Finale”).

Image

From a narrative standpoint, in the comics, there had been a bit of an arms race with various villains including The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson) and HYDRA (Serpent Society potentially replacing them as Madame Hydra’s other villainess persona Viper was part of that group) trying to weaponize the Hulk’s powers. The two baddies getting their hands on the Hulk tech is something I’ve been bringing up for years as a potential angle for their involvement in the film.

Then again, Thunderbolt Ross isn’t the only Red Hulk persona as his daughter Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) also obtains Hulk abilities and Betty ends up using the name Red She-Hulk, getting her own run of comics at Marvel.

Julius Onah directs with a cast that includes Anthony Mackie, Ford, Carl Lumbly, Danny Ramirez, Shira Haas, Rosa Salazar, wrestler Seth Rollins, Xosha Roquemore, Liv Tyler back as Betty Ross, and the aforementioned Tim Blake Nelson reprising his role as Gamma-boosted super-villain The Leader. The new sequel will see Mackie’s Sam Wilson taking on the cinematic Captain America mantle from Steve Rogers after the events of “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier” and the U.S. government’s failed attempt to replace him with Wyatt Russell‘s U.S. Agent. “Captain America: Brave New World” has a release date of February 14, 2025, and would mean that a trailer isn’t likely coming anytime soon with “Deadpool 3” being their main film project coming out in 2024.

‘Captain America 4’ Lands ‘Moon Knight’ Writer Ahead Of Reshoots In 2024 & Wyatt Russell Shares Disappointing ‘Thunderbolts’ Casting Update

Yesterday, it was reported by Deadline that Marvel’s fourth “Captain America” film, “Captain America: Brave New World,” would be undergoing further rewrites ahead of reshoots with the help of screenwriter Matthew Orton (“Operation Finale”), who had previously worked with Marvel Studios on “Moon Knight.”

Plot details are being kept under wraps but there is an expectation that an MCU version of the supervillain team The Serpent Society (previously used as a fake title for “Captain America: Civil War” and their involvement seemingly backed up in set photos) could be the antagonists of the action flick alongside Tim Blake Nelson’s The Leader. Harrison Ford had been recast as President “Thunderbolt” Ross after the death of William Hurt and could be either friend or foe to Sam Wilson.

Dalan Musson and Malcolm Spellman wrote the shooting version of the script with Julius Onah directing.

That additional filming is said to be taking place in the spring/summer of 2024 and will hit theaters on February 14, 2025. It’s important to point out that all MCU films have reshoots built into their budgets and nearly all projects undergo reshoots/pickups after they’ve wrapped principal photography.

More business-as-usual for the studio.

Also, while this isn’t a huge tidbit, “Thunderbolts” star Wyatt Russell (“The Falcon & The Winter Soldier”) while promoting his Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via ThePlaylist) revealed that neither Harrison Ford (President Thunderbolt Ross) nor Daniel Bruhl (Zemo) would be appearing in the film but hasn’t read the MCU film’s script to know for sure.

“Daniel is not going to be it, [but] he could play a part in it. I don’t know. I haven’t read a script yet, but as of now, I’m not sure. Harrison’s in ‘Captain America 4,’ I think. I don’t know, I haven’t read a script, so I don’t know who exactly who is in it. I know Florence is in it,  I know Sebastian’s in it. I know David Harbour is going to be in it. David Harbour is another guy who’s, like, so good. I love everything he does.”

We could theorize the actor is likely basing his knowledge of who is in the film based on the official concept art that announced the film’s character lineup such as Russell’s U.S. Agent. Then again, it might help if Russell had read the script before answering the question. It’s worth pointing out that “Thunderbolts” filming and “Captain America: Brave New World” reshoots are expected to overlap with each other leaving room for Ross/Zemo to appear.

“Thunderbolts” like a bunch of recent Marvel films have been undergoing rewrites ahead of their production and it remains to be seen if either President Ross or Zemo ultimately show up in the pic. However, it is worth mentioning that Zemo was a founding member of the team in the comics and there had been some assumptions given President Ross’ (Red Hulk is a Thunderbolts member in more recent incarnations of the roster in the comics) connection to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine established in other films that he could be showing up.

It was recently confirmed by Robert Kirkman (“The Walking Dead,” “Invincible”) on a YouTube video that his actor pal Steven Yeun (“Nope”) is set in the role of Sentry and had a costume fitting. The rest of the film’s cast includes Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/White Wolf/Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova/Black Widow, David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine), and Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster).

Filming on “Thunderbolts” is expected to begin in the new year once rewrites are completed and has a release date of July 25, 2025.

You can watch that full exchange on the Happy Sad Confused podcast below.

‘Deadpool 3’ Moves To July 26 While Marvel Bumps Other 2024 Tentpoles ‘Captain America 4’ & ‘Thunderbolts’ To 2025

Yesterday, it was announced by Marvel/Disney that they would be shifting around their release dates for upcoming films. The main tidbits from these updates see “Deadpool 3” (only completed 50% of filming and resuming later this month) moving to July 26 taking a spot originally meant for “Captain America: Brave New World” (wrapped before the strike). Both “Captain America 4” and “Thunderbolts” would be moving out of 2024 entirely with new dates in 2025. This would make “Deadpool 3” the only feature film coming in 2024 and would overload audiences in 2025 with four releases.

These are the new dates for the upcoming slate of Marvel Studios feature film releases:

DEADPOOL 3 – July 26, 2024

CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD – February 14, 2025

FANTASTIC FOUR – May 2, 2025

THUNDERBOLTS – July 25, 2025

BLADE – November 7, 2025

AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY – May 1, 2026

AVENGERS: SECRET WARS – May 7, 2027

ARMOR WARS – TBA

SHANG-CH 2 – TBA

X-MEN REBOOT – TBA

“Thunderbolts,” “Fantastic Four,” and “Blade” have yet to start filming and we should be expecting some big casting news coming soon as the actors’ strike is resolved (pending membership ratification) and the casting process can now resume.

However, even with that July date for “Deadpool 3” now officially etched-in they have two fallback dates just in case the film needs more time to be completed given that normally films of this scale tend to take longer to be completed. Those include the film’s original date of September 6, 2024, and the former “Thunderbolts” date of December 20, 2024. The hope here is that Marvel Studios and director Shawn Levy won’t be rushing things as the film has only finished 50% of production (also would likely need reshoots/pickups after a round of editing).

This won’t be the last time Marvel shifts around these upcoming dates and we should be prepared for more shuffles in the future.

Julius Onah To Direct ‘Captain America 4’ For Marvel Studios

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, we saw Steve Rogers hand down the Captain America mantle and shield to Sam Wilson. However, that was easier said than done as the U.S. government had its own ideas for who should take the position leading to the complex events of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier.

In the series, we see that the government that turned its back on Wilson also threw another super-soldier in prison with Isaiah Bradley simply because a black man couldn’t be “trusted” with his powers. or follow orders. The entire reason for the Disney+ project was to show the transition of Anthony Mackie’s Falcon to Captain American before getting his own film.

The Hollywood Reporter has an update concerning Captain America 4 as Marvel has tapped director Julius Onah (Cloverfield Paradox, Luce) to helm the fourth installment. We should expect some of the hard-hitting themes the streaming series as head writer Malcolm Spellman is co-writing the script with Dalan Musson.

Captain America 4 is expected to continue the events after The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, which likely means that Zemo and U.S. Agent could make their return or have some connective tissue to the upcoming Thunderbolts film that has Jake Schreier (Frank & Robot) attached to direct or even the Armor Wars show.

The Serpent Society would make for a great surrogate for HYDRA in the Sam Wilson films, after the terrorist orgainzation that was embedded within SHIELD was dissolved, because the roster is massive and would move away from the Nazi/Red Skull connection.

While most have accepted that Mackie is now the new Captain America, there have been an oddball group that believe that Rogers will return to take up the shield. As Evans and Kevin Feige has downplayed Rogers’ future in the MCU. The actor doubling-down with the following tweet after THR added ambigous/unsourced spectulation that Evans could be coming back.

Marvel Studios is heading back to Comic-Con later this month and we could learn about its release date.

Henry Cavill Open To Playing Captain Britain For Marvel Studios

There is a huge uncertainly with actor Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU as Superman, as while he’s still keen on the idea of returning for a Man of Steel sequel, the studio seems to be more concerned with multiple other Kryptonian cohorts.

During an extensive chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill was asked about who he might want to hypothetically play within the world of Marvel if he had the chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain seems to be of interest for him given he’s not often playing British characters.

“I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else because everyone’s doing such an amazing job. However, I have the internet, and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain, and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”

As far as we know, there aren’t any official plans to use the Brit superhero anytime soon, however, he was briefly referenced as being part of SHIELD in the 1970s in Avengers: Endgame by Peggy Carter. It wouldn’t be terribly shocking if Braddock appeared in the upcoming Captain America 4 led by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Captain America.

It wouldn’t be like Marvel hasn’t teased English superheroes before.

Kit Harington is playing Dane Whitman/Black Knight in the Eternals and there could be some linkage given the Arthurian connections. Joey Chapman aka Union Jack had an Easter Egg in Iron Man 2 as one of the racers competing against Tony Stark.

With the X-Men rights firmly at Marvel Studios, they could easily bring Braddock’s team Excalibur into the mix as well and allow for his MI6 Agent sister Betsy Braddock (becomes Psylcoke when her mind inhabits a Japanese woman, Kwannon) to join the MCU too.

Antony Mackie Joins Live-Action ‘Twisted Metal’ Series From ‘Deadpool’ Screenwriters

PlayStation Productions is a newly formed production company meant to bring various Sony PlayStation IP/characters to film and television incarnations. One of those upcoming projects is a live-action television series based on the classic video game Twisted Metal, from Sony Pictures Television.

Deadline reports that Marvel Studios alumni Anthony Mackie (Altered Carbon, Black Mirror) has nabbed the lead role of John Doe in the series. Mackie recently became the new Captain America by the end of the Disney+ series The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, with the expectation he’ll reprise the superhero role in Captain America 4.

The project is based on a new take from Rhett Reese and Paul Wenrick (Deadpool) that will be written by Michael Jordan Smith (Cobra Kai), all three will executive produce.

Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy based on an original take by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.

Doe is a smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives. With no memory of his past, he gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make his wish of finding community come true, but only if he can survive an onslaught of savage vehicular combat.

Other PlayStation properties getting live-action adaptations includes an Uncharted movies led by Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, an HBO series version of The Last of Us, and a feature film based on Ghost of Tsushima from John Wick franchise director Chad Stahelski.

Four Mystery Marvel Studios Movies Set For Release In 2024

Yesterday, Disney announced four new release dates for untitled Marvel Studios feature films in 2024. Those spots being etched-out for February, May, July, and November.

There are now seven release dates on the schedule for unnamed projects that will likely be named at the next big Marvel Studios presentation something that is likely around the corner.

However, we have an idea what at least four of those options might be with Jon Watts’ Fantastic Four reboot, Bassam Tariq’s Blade reboot, Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 3, and Anthony Mackie’s Captain America 4 at various stages of development.

Below is a rundown of the current Marvel Studios schedule for films between 2021 to 2024.

  • ETERNALS – November 5, 2021
  • SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME – December 17, 2021
  • DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS – March 25, 2021
  • THOR: LOVE & THUNDER – May 6, 2022
  • BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER – July 8, 2022
  • THE MARVELS – November 11, 2022
  • ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA – February 17, 2023
  • GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 – May 5, 2023
  • TBA – July 28, 2023
  • TBA – October 6, 2023
  • TBA – November 10, 2023
  • TBA – February 16, 2024
  • TBA – May 3, 2024
  • TBA – July 26, 2024
  • TBA – November 8, 2024
  • FANTASTIC FOUR (DIRECTOR JON WATTS) – TBA
  • BLADE (DIRECTOR BASSAM TARIQ) – TBA
  • DEADPOOL 3 – TBA
  • CAPTAIN AMERICA 4 – TBA
  • X-MEN – TBA

We could easily theorize that some other options might include their X-Men reboot, Shang-Chi 2, Eternals 2, Black Widow 2 (focusing on Yelena Belova), Avengers 5, Secret Wars, Spider-Man 4 (if Sony and Disney can expand their deal), Black Panther 3, Ant-Man 4, Doctor Strange 3, Thor 5, and Young Avengers.

Some other projects I’d love to see be considered for the film side such as Squadron Supreme, Captain Carter, Black Knight, The Invaders, Nova, Adam Warlock, Alpha Flight, Agents of Atlas, Namor (if they’re able to make it), Ka-Zar, Killraven, and Red Wolf.

As mentioned above, we’re likely on the cusp of a new Marvel Studios presentation that will likely give us an idea of what else is coming to both Disney+ (Disney+ Day in November) and the big screen in the future.

Marvel & Russo Brothers Were In Negotiations For Mystery Movie Before Scarlett Johansson Lawsuit Stalled Talks

We’ve been excited about the potential return of the Russo Brothers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after giving us Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

There is now an update of sorts from the Wall Street Journal, as they point out the sibling directing team was indeed in talks with Marvel Studios to return to the MCU for a mystery film but talks apparently have stalled.

The reasoning is being linked to Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow lawsuit against Marvel/Disney, as the Russo Brothers are concerned by the issues raised by the actress including the potential release of the unnamed pic and if their contract for payment will ultimately be upheld by Disney.

This is the first real instance of fallout from the lawsuit since it was filed.

We don’t know what exactly that mystery film could be, but considering they’ve talked up a desire to tackle X-Men’s Wolverine and a hard-reboot is on the horizon. Marvel Studios could look to the Russo Brothers to help with the reboot as they did with seasoned MCU director Jon Watts for Fantastic Four. Watts being behind Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy before landing the reboot.

However, this is simply my own speculation given the director’s comments in the past about being able to get their hands on mutants.

Here is what Joe Russo said about Wolverine back in February.

“Wolverine has always been such a special character for me. To realize him on screen, it’s very hard because Hugh Jackman‘s performance is definitive. It’s like Batman; you have to really think of a way to, you have to really find the right actor to come in and give a really different take to that character. But I would really love to see him on screen.”

I think the best thing is to take a break, without question. You need a [palate cleanser], you need to rinse the towel a little bit, let everyone enjoy what was, and then come up with something new. But I’d love to take a crack at Wolverine at some point.”

The Russo Brothers would be perfect to handle the scale and volume of characters as they’ve proven multiple times being able juggle a large roster of superheroes. Despite fans potentially wanting someone brand new to direct a reboot, Marvel might be more comfortable from their existing group of filmmakers given the importance of these MCU reboots.

Secret Wars is something they’ve also talked-up but we don’t have concrete information that is happening in the near future.

Another potential contender could be Anthony Mackie’s Captain America 4, given that doesn’t have a director attached. We had been hearing that the studio wanted a POC director for that one, but having Russo Brothers making a third Captain America movie wouldn’t be that shocking either.

The Serpent Crown Could Be Next Big McGuffin Coming To The MCU Leading To Lumerians & The Serpent Society

Yesterday, fans discovered the possibility of Namor (Prince of Atlantis) villain Gargantos being involved in a fight sequence in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. It felt like a big hint that Namor is coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or even the Doctor Strange sequel after Scott Derrickson had teased on Twitter before deleting the post and exiting the film leading to rewrites from Michael Waldron (Loki).

Despite believable rumors of Namor (alongside other characters) showing up in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Atlantis and Wakanda having battled each other before), neither the trades nor Marvel Studios have confirmed this exciting potential. Given that Angela Bassett told Entertainment Tonight there have been at least five versions of the script means that things could have been tweaked/changed over the last year or two.

“There have been about five incarnations of the script and I hear another one’s coming,” Bassett said of the script development of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

While the Darkhold (book of dark magic) is being introduced in WandaVision and should play a large role in Doctor Strange 2, we could be seeing more dangerous items falling into the wrong hands.

The addition of Gargantos may mean another dangerous McGuffin could be coming to the MCU as well. As the comic that featured Gargantos included the former ruler of Atlantis, Naga of Lumeria. The Lumerians are sort of antagonists to the Atlanteans, and their leader Naga wears an object of interest of Marvel Comics, the Serpent Crown. Interestingly enough, Captain America: The Winter Soldier gave them a brief nod with the SHIELD ship in the opening sequence being called The Lumerian Star (seemingly a HYDRA operation).

The Serpent Crown has connections to various villains such as Mephisto (Marvel’s cosmic version of the Devil), Ophelia Sarkissian aka Viper, The Serpent Society (once led by Sarkissian), and the aforementioned Naga of Lumeria.

In the comics, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and the Thing teamed up to fight against Quasar, who was possessed by the Serpent Crown.

The Serpent Society connection is a big standout here. Mainly, because it was the fake title (Captain America: Serpent Society) used before Kevin Feige announced that they would be making Captain America: Civil War and announced the casting of Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black Panther. There had been reports that The Falcon & The Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson had been assigned to write Captain America 4, assumed to star Anthony Mackie. So, setting up the Serpent Society as a threat or giving clues to the Serpent Crown beforehand would be a good way to go.

The Serpent Society has a connection to Lumeria, which makes the Lumerian Star tease in Captain America: The Winter Soldier even more interesting given that it was controlled by HYDRA. Viper, also goes by the codename Madame Hydra. They could easily become the successors to HYDRA and make for foes for Sam Wilson’s new Captain America or even the Thunderbolts.

I wouldn’t be that shocked if Val (was an incarnation of Madame Hydra in the comics) or Sharon Carter’s Power Broker are part of this MCU incarnation of The Serpent Society, given that Viper once controlled the island nation of Madripoor, which seemingly we’ll be revisiting in the future possibly in Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings.

Roxxon’s Hugh Jones (who appeared in Agents of SHIELD) attempted to use the Serpent Crown to gain control of the U.S. government in the comics, it’s possible the MCU could reboot that character as they have with the Darkhold in WandaVision. The Loki series, that gave us a true introduction to The Multiverse, featured Roxxon’s Walmart proxy Roxxcart.

I guess we’ll have to wait on March 25, 2022 to known for sure if Namor, Atlantis, and The Serpent Crown are coming.

Anthony Mackie & David Harbour To Star In Netflix’s ‘We Have A Ghost’ From ‘Freaky’ Director Christopher Landon; Filming Has Started

Freaky director Christopher Landon has secured a high-profile project at Netflix with We Have a Ghost, which is based on the short story Ernest from Geoff Manaugh.

We Have A Ghost follows Kevin and his family, who find a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home and get turned into overnight social media sensations. But when Kevin and Ernest go rogue to investigate the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become a target of the CIA.

The news coming from The Hollywood Reporter adds that the fantastic cast consists of Anthony Mackie (Outside The Wire, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier), David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow), Tig Nataro (Army of The Dead, Star Trek: Discovery), Jennifer Coolidge (Legally Blonde), Erica Ash (Survivor’s Remorse, Uncle Drew), Isabella Russo (School of Rock the Musical, Crashing), Niles Fitch (This Is Us), Faith Ford (Murphy Brown, Hope & Faith) and Steve Coulter (Shotgun Wedding, The Conjuring).

It’s not mentioned in the report, but Landon’s previous work has skewed more comedic/tongue-in-cheek and I guess we’ll have to assume that is the case with We Have A Ghost, given that Harbour and Mackie have done humorous roles in the past.

Christopher Landon took to Twitter to announced that film had officially started on Monday and confirmed that cinematographer Marc Spicer (Escape Room, Escape Room 2) will be behind the camera. Spicer has a wonderful eye and those Escape Room movies have an extremely slick look which should mean that We Have A Ghost will really have a strong visual edge to it.

The pairing of Mackie and Harbour is interesting as Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige suggested on Twitter (during a Black Widow watch party) recently he’d like to see Sam Wilson’s Captain America and Alexei’s Red Guardian come to blows at some point. It’ll be interesting if the two actors could reunite for an MCU project like Captain America 4.
