Zack Snyder Calls ‘Planet Of The Dead’ A “Sci-Fi Actioner With Horror Elements” With Another Possible Heist Angle

Zack Snyder and Netflix will continue their working relationship with the sci-fi film Rebel Moon, which reportedly has actress Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond, Atomic Blonde, Kingsmen: The Secret Service) set for the lead female role. And there a direct sequel to Army of The Dead has been greenlit and will be shot by Snyder once he finishes up on Rebel Moon.

While speaking with Variety to help promote the prequel film Army of Thieves, Snyder dished some brief details on what they’re planning to do with the animated project Army of The Dead: Lost Vegas and the direct sequel Planet of The Dead.

“Shay [Hatten] and I have been talking about the straight sequel to Army of the Dead being possibly a sci-fi actioner with horror elements. So that’s a fun genre, probably with a heist at its center.”

While Army of The Dead very much was an horror actioner, the sci-fi stuff was on the sidelines with the hint to the time loop, the Area 51 convoy and the alien origin of the zombies not being a huge focus of the first film.

The filmmaker also zeroed in on the franchise’s sci-fi elements that could continue on.

“First of all, I know exactly what I’d want to see in the sequel. We’re doing the animated series, which will come out next year. The animated series very much delves deeply into the ‘why’ of the zombie apocalypse and where the zombies come from exactly. I think the time loops, portals, doorways to other realms, things of that nature, are very much in play. So all of those clues that Dieter gives us are very much part of how we continue to spiral out the Army of the Dead universe.”

Maybe, we’ll see a new team trying to break into an Area 51 bunker?

The Area 51 and alien origin could be excellent fodder for an Aliens-inspired zombie movie, but we’ll have to wait and see what they end up doing there. I’d personally love to see the sequel barrow elements from the arcade game Area 51 (soliders fighting zombies/aliens).

‘Rebel Moon’: Sofia Boutella Set To Lead Zack Snyder’s Sci-Fi Take On ‘Seven Samurai’

After being on the outs with Warner Bros. over Justice League, Zack Snyder moved on to make Army of The Dead at Netflix and has decided to make his next couple films at the streaming giant.

Deadline reports that actress Sofia Boutella (Atomic Blonde, Star Trek Beyond) has nabbed the lead role in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, a project that originally started out as his Star Wars pitch to Lucasfilm during the early days that Disney acquired the franchise.

Rebel Moon is a sci-fi take on Akira Kurosawa’s iconic samurai flick Seven Samurai that Snyder co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad.

The story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.

Boutella will play the film’s female heroine and has a dance background making her a perfect selection for the action sequences. Interestingly enough, she had a big role in the last Star Trek film and might be up for extensive makeup if it’s required.

After Rebel Moon, Snyder will direct Planet of The Dead, a sequel to Army of The Dead.

Zack Snyder’s ‘Army Of The Dead’ Sequel Is Titled ‘Planet Of The Dead’

Director Zack Snyder after exiting the DCEU has made a brand new creative home at Netflix with his films Army of The Dead and Army of Thieves (produced by Snyder), the next big project at Netflix is Rebel Moon. It’s a sci-fi action film based on his old Star Wars pitch that would have been inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai.

Netflix is keen on continuing the zombie franchise as well, as Snyder is attached to helm a sequel to Army of The Dead. He’s now confirmed to Inverse in an interview that it will be titled Planet of The Dead and alludes to Dieter potentially surviving the events of the last film.

“But the real adventure would be to see what happened to him when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened? We don’t see him die on camera, and there’s still some time left. I won’t tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2 — aka Planet of the Dead — but let’s just say that there’s a chance Dieter survives. And there’s a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline.”

It’s interesting that the title refers to a “planet” as there is an alien aspect with Area 51 and the origins of the zombies expected to be non-Earthbound. Could the film go off-world or will the zombies simply overrun the entire plant? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

The filmmaker also gave a brief update on Rebel Moon.

“We’re just plugging away. It’s so huge and so crazy but really exciting, and I’m super excited as we get closer to sharing some art and casting because it’s all starting to come together.”

‘BRZRKR’: Keanu Reeves Reveals That They’ve Hired ‘The Batman’ Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin For His Violent Comic Book Movie

Keanu Reeves is currently shooting John Wick 4, but is also lining up future projects including a feature film adaptation of his newly released Boom! Studios comic book, BRZRRK, that was picked-up by Netflix.

Here is the official press for the comic book.

BOOM! Studios is proud to announce BRZRKR, a twelve-issue limited series from the iconic Keanu Reeves in his Must Read comic book writing debut alongside New York Times bestselling co-writer Matt Kindt (Folklords, Bang!) and acclaimed artist Ron Garney (Wolverine, Captain America), colorist Bill Crabtree (BRPD), and letterer Clem Robins (Hellboy) in a brutally violent new series about one immortal warrior’s fight through the ages.

The man known only as B. is half-mortal and half-God, cursed and compelled to violence…even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the world for centuries, B. may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B. will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.

Reeves has given Collider a tiny development update on the BRZRKR film, revealing they’ve landed screenwriter Mattson Tomlin to tackle the script for the live-action film. Tomslin previously worked on The Batman with director Matt Reeves, the Netflix film Project Power, a Mega Man movie, and is developing an anime series set within the Terminator universe for the streaming service.

We’re working on trying to set up a company with the animation and we’ve hired a writer for the film Mattson Tomlin. He’s been cool and just starting to put things together. That’s where we’re at.”

A director has yet to be announced but we’re hopeful that a seasoned filmmaker with action chops lands the gig. Given that they’ve just started developing a script there isn’t likely a production start in mind and unlikely conflicts with plans for John Wick 5 or potential Matrix sequels.

Rege-Jean Page & Noah Hawley Team For Untitled Netflix Heist Thriller Produced By Russo Brothers

British actor Rege-Jean Page left the hit Netflix series Bridgerton to pursue a Hollywood film career and it seemingly has already come full circle with him returning to the streaming giant for a new project.

Variety reports that Page has landed a lead role in an untitled heist film that will be written and directed by Noah Hawley (Lucy In The Sky, Legion, Fargo) with AGBO producing, the production company from Joe and Anthony Russo.

The Russo Brothers are also behind Netflix’s most expensive film The Gray Man that features Rege-Jean Page on the call-sheet alongside Ryan Gosling (The Nice Guys, Drive, Blade Runner 2049), Chris Evans (Snowpiercer, Captain America 1-3, Avengers 1-4), Ana De Armas (No Time To Die, Blade Runner 2049, Knives Out), Wagner Moura (Narcos), Jessica Henwick, Dhanush, Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo), Alfre Woodard (Luke Cage), Julia Butters (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood), Eme Ikwuakor (Inhumans, Moonfall) and Scott Haze (Venom, Jurassic World: Dominion, Minari).

To those who lurk in the shadows, he’s known as the Gray Man. He is a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible and then fading away. And he always hits his target. Always. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. Forces like money. And power. And there are men who hold these as the only currency worth fighting for. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. But Court Gentry is going to prove that, for him, there’s no gray area between killing for a living and killing to stay alive…

Page recently wrapped on Dungeons & Dragons and is attached to star in The Saint reboot, replacing Chris Pine.

Meanwhile, Noah Hawley was officially announced back in December as working on a FX on Hulu series set in the Alien universe with Ridley Scott set as the Earthbound show’s producer.

It’s also unclear when this heist project will begin shooting.

Rian Johnson Says ‘Knives Out 2’ Has Officially Wrapped Production

Rian Johnson has taken to Twitter to announce that his Knives Out sequel, referred to as Knives Out 2, has wrapped principal photography.

“We just wrapped production on the next Benoit Blanc mystery and also I finally watched Annette and holy shit it’s amazing. Sending so much love and gratitude to our INCREDIBLE crew and cast and Leos Carax!”

The impressive cast of Knives Out 2 already consists of Daniel Craig (No Time To Die), Dave Bautista (Blade Runner 2049, Spectre, Guardians of The Galaxy, Army of The Dead), Edward Norton (Fight Club, The Incredible Hulk, Rounders, Moonrise Kingdom), Janelle Monae (Moonlight, Hidden Figures), Kathryn Hahn (WandaVision), Jessica Henwick (The Matrix Resurrections, Iron Fist, Game of Thrones), Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight, The Magnificent Seven), Madelyn Cline, and Leslie Odom Jr. (Murder On The Orient Express, One Night In Miami).

Craig returns as the comedic Southern detective Benoit Blanc as it seems like a group of Americans are the target of a new murder mystery in Greece, I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if it involves another bunch of rich/entitled characters if the set photos are anything to go by.

When the Knives Out sequels were first announced they made headlines because when Netflix closed a massive deal with Johnson and Craig worth a massive $400 million to secure the next two installments.

It’s unclear when they’ll start shooting Knives Out 3 or if Johnson has even begun writing the film’s script.

We likely won’t know for a while when Netflix will release the film as they don’t really dish on release dates too early or just after a project completes filming.

KNIVES OUT – The circumstances surrounding the death of crime novelist Harlan Thrombey are mysterious, but there’s one thing that renowned Detective Benoit Blanc knows for sure — everyone in the wildly dysfunctional Thrombey family is a suspect. Now, Blanc must sift through a web of lies and red herrings to uncover the truth.

‘Extraction 2’: Chris Hemsworth Getting Into Fighting Shape For Prague Shoot On Netflix Sequel After ‘Furiosa’ Delays

Netflix is looking like they caught a break and their Extraction sequel starring Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has jumped the line after prep on Furiosa paused nixing the planned summer shoot seemingly because of increased cases of COVID-19 there. Extraction 2 also brings back director Sam Hargrave and screenwriter Joe Russo.

Variety recently mentioned that filming on the Extraction 2 had been prepping in New South Wales, Australia the same Aussie state where Chris Hemsworth recently shot Marvel’s Thor: Love & Thunder and had been planning on shooting Furiosa over the summer.

However, due concerns of COVID-19 in the area filming on Extraction 2 has been reportedly moved to Europe in Prague, Czech Republic. There were previous rumblings from the Los Angeles Times that George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road prequel/sequel won’t begin shooting until 2022 and the report also mentions that pre-production on the prequel won’t begin until November/December alluding to the film indeed being delayed until 2022.

Hemsworth has posted an Instagram video of himself training for the upcoming action pic alongside his workout routine.

Hargrave has a background in stunts and was previously the second unit director on The Accountant, Atomic Blonde, Avengers: Endgame, and The Mandalorian. He’s expected to have directed at least one episode of The Book of Boba Fett.

Hemsworth will join Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, The Northman, Last Night In Soho) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (The Matrix Resurrections, Candyman, Aquaman, Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom) as the leads of Miller’s Mad Max prequel Furiosa. Filming was supposed to take place at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, the same location used for both Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings and Thor: Love & Thunder.

Director George Miller is no stranger to production delays, he originally came up with the idea for Mad Max: Fury Road back in 1987 and filming didn’t start up until 2012, two years after Tom Hardy secured the titular role and after multiple production hiccups going back to 2001.

EXTRACTION – A black-market mercenary who has nothing to lose is hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an imprisoned international crime lord. But in the murky underworld of weapons dealers and drug traffickers, an already deadly mission approaches the impossible.

‘The Old Guard 2’ Will Officially Be Directed By Victoria Mahoney

Netflix has tapped a new director to handle The Old Guard sequel, as Deadline reports that Victoria Mahoney will replace Gina Prince-Bythewood. Adding that Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, and Chiwetel Ejiofor are returning for the sequel.

Mahoney was the first female director to work on a Star Wars project, assigned as the huge film’s second unit director.

The news was reaffirmed by previous director Gina Prince-Bythewood on Twitter, who decided not to direct and will stay on as a producer. The filmmaker is busy with the Viola Davis action film The Woman King.

THE OLD GUARD – Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (Kiki Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

‘Cowboy Bebop’: Multiple First Look Images From Netflix’s Live-Action Series Coming November 19

Netflix has released a fleet of first look images from their live-action Cowboy Bebop series giving us some excellent glimpses at the upcoming show based on the beloved anime series.

Based on the worldwide phenomenon from Sunrise Inc., Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world…for the right price.

The cast of Cowboy Bebop includes John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, Alex Hassell as Vicious, Elena Satine as Julia, Geoff Stults (Little Fires Everywhere, 12 Strong), Tamara Tunie (Black Earth Rising, Dietland), Mason Alexander Park (Hedwig and the Angry Inch National Broadway Tour), Rachel House (Thor Ragnarok, Soul), Ann Truong (Strikeback!, Hard Target 2), and Hoa Xuande (Ronny Chieng: International Student, Top of the Lake).

Filming had been taking place in Auckland, New Zealand alongside Amazon’s Lord of The Rings series (recently moving production to United Kingdom). There were production delays when John Cho got injured on set and were able to complete filming during the pandemic last year.

Netflix is also behind a live-action series based on Avatar: The Last Airbender, but would be aiming for a younger audience. However, this could lead to the streaming service tackling more live-action adaptations of anime/manga projects. I’ll keep my fingers crossed they’re able to make a series based on Ninja Scroll with Appian Way Productions (rights holders).

A series trailer for Cowboy Bebop is likely around the corner, but these images should hold fans over until that happens. The sci-fi adventure show will debut November 19 on Netflix.

Are you excited to finally get your hands on Cowboy Bebop?

EXCLUSIVE: Guillermo del Toro’s Longtime Cinematographer Guillermo Navarro Joins ’12 After Midnight’ Directing Team

Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley) is behind a new horror anthology series at Netflix called Guillermo del Toro Presents 12 After Midnight (formerly 10 After Midnight), where he’ll write, produce, and even direct alongside others.

In this new genre-defining anthology series, acclaimed Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will present a collection of personally curated stories, that are both equally sophisticated and horrific. Creator and executive producer del Toro will bring his own visionary style as both a writer and director to certain episodes. In addition, he will handpick a team of the genre’s best writers and exciting new filmmakers to bring his selection of stories to life.

The Oscar-winning director is assembling a team of directors to work on the show and we’ve learned about a new addition to the directing team that already officially includes del Toro and Jennifer Kent (The Babadook, The Nightingale).

The Ronin can exclusively reveal that Guillermo Navarro (Godfather of Harlem, Cocaine Godmother, Narcos, Hannibal, Preacher, Luke Cage) has joined the growing group of handpicked directors working on the horror anthology series.

Navarro is mainly known as a cinematographer with a heap of credits such as Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Four Rooms, and Spy Kids. He is the longtime cinematographer of del Toro working together on Cronos, The Devil’s Backbone, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, and Pacific Rim.

We previously reported that director David Prior (The Empty Man) is also working on the series.

There is an expectation the more directors will be named at some point and we will update when more names are announced.

The production team includes seasoned production designer Tamara Deverell (Star Trek: Discovery), who had recently worked with del Toro on his latest feature film Nightmare Alley and his vampire series The Strain. Deverell will work alongside art director Brandt Gordon (Nightmare Alley, Crimson Peak, Total Recall, Suicide Squad, Shazam!)

Plot details on the shows are unknown but we should learn more once the streaming service releases some footage. There is an expectation that 12 After Midnight won’t be dropped on Netflix until sometime in 2022.

We know that Guillermo del Toro is busy on other projects including his next studio release Nightmare Alley this December by Searchlight Pictures and is co-directing a stop-motion animated film based on the classic fairy tale of Pinocchio for Netflix. It’ll be interesting to see if del Toro will continue his relationship with Netflix on future films and television projects.
