Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out 3’ Starring Daniel Craig Begins Filming Later This Year With Potential 2025 Release Date

After the success of “Knives Out,” writer/director Rian Johnson and star Daniel Craig decided to turn the mature whodunnit comedy into a string of films with it landing at streaming giant Netflix. Their original deal would be for two sequels with “Glass Onion” being that second film and a third untitled pic would be made to round out a trilogy. There is a big update on “Knives Out 3” (Won’t be the actual title) as filming is aiming to start up real soon.

A new report from Deadline focusing on Johnson’s production company, T-Street, revealed that the untitled third installment in the “Knives Out” trilogy is said to be shooting later this year. We could easily speculate that this update means there is a great shot it will be ready to be released on Netflix in 2025.

Of course, the bigger aspect of these sequels is trying to suggest and figure out who will be part of the lineup of actors Johnson will select to become the latest group of murder suspects.

One of the more interesting aspects of “Glass Onion” was the reveal in the opening act that Hugh Grant (“The Gentlemen”) plays Benoit Blanc’s (Craig) husband and easily could be making a return in a bigger role for this third installment. Also, exploring that relationship as Blanc seemed to have been spending an extended period of time in the bathtub playing video games and reading stacks of books during the lockdown era of the COVID pandemic.

‘Rebel Moon’ Not Having Stellar Debut Compared To Other Netflix Films From 2023

There was such promise when director Zack Snyder decided to rebuff the theatrical studio machine to take his film ideas to Netflix, a streamer known to throw around insane amounts of money on risky projects that tend to overspend on talent with bloated budgets. “Army of The Dead,” another zombie flick after his well-received “Dawn of The Dead” (penned by James Gunn) seemed to have modest success at Netflix with somewhat approval from both critics and audiences with a sequel, “Planet of The Dead,” expected to be Snyder’s next feature film.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Zack Snyder's 'Rebel Moon' Sci-Fi Project | FirstShowing.net

Well, the recently debuted “Rebel Moon- Part One: A Child of Fire” dropped this month, and there are now some official viewership numbers released by the streaming service to give us an idea of how the movie is doing with Netflix subscribers. Netflix’s own first three-day viewership data has been released for “Rebel Moon – Part One” (via What’s On Netflix) and those numbers aren’t exactly that impressive. While it ended up with 23.9 million and might seem solid, What’s On Netflix added some context comparing “Rebel Moon” to other Netflix original films released in 2023 and the sci-fi pic doesn’t even crack the Top 8 films. Since the box office isn’t really a gauge for success with streaming feature films, the viewership data is really all we have to work with.

Here’s what the Top 10 movies looked like from What’s On Netflix’s list of 2023 films based on their first three days of performance and “Rebel Moon” is squarely in that ninth place spot:

MURDER MYSTERY 2 – 42.9M

THE MOTHER – 42.9M

EXTRACTION 2 – 42.8M

LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND – 41.7M

HEART OF STONE – 33.1M

YOU PEOPLE – 28.3M

THE KILLER – 27.9M

YOUR PLACE OR MINE – 27.7M

REBEL MOON – 23.9M

THE PALE BLUE EYE – 19.8M

Zack Snyder built a whole new camera lens to give Netflix's Rebel Moon a 'distorted retro' look | TechRadar

The ambitious pic didn’t exactly win over critics but the lower-than-expected numbers might speak for themselves. Still, this is only part 1 of a two-parter, plus, there have been promises of a “more mature director’s cut” of the film in early 2024 (Whatever that means). If these early numbers are any indication, Netflix might be second-guessing any follow-ups given the cost vs return for the streaming giant. Perhaps, we won’t be seeing any more of these two-parter productions from Snyder anytime soon as the release model (two different edits) and splitting a single film into two might be part of the problem here, this isn’t exactly “Hunger Games” or “Dune.”

A trailer for “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” was released over the holidays and is still expected to drop on April 19, 2024, as planned.

Christoph Waltz Joins Cast Of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ Movie Alongside Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth & Oscar Isaac

During a chat with Collider, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro‘s has revealed that two-time Best Supporting Actor Oscar winner Christoph Waltz has joined the cast of his upcoming retelling of the iconic sci-fi horror story, “Frankenstein.” Waltz is likely best known to audiences for working alongside director Quentin Tarantino in the period action films “Django Unchained” and “The Inglourious Basterds.” A film that del Toro says he’s been trying to make for 50 years but now believes he’s “crazy or brave” enough to attempt it now.

The actor joins a cast that already boasts talent such as Oscar Isaac (“Ex Machina”), Mia Goth (“Infinity Pool,” “Pearl”), and Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”).

Frankenstein | Book by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, Bernie Wrightson, Stephen King | Official Publisher Page | Simon & Schuster

You might remember that a while back when Universal was trying to resurrect the Universal Monsters franchise, an attempt was made by del Toro to get a new “Frankenstein” move off the ground there but ultimately that didn’t happen. Luckily, for the filmmaker since the story is from the Mary Shelley novel published back in 1818 and is in the public domain, he was free to try again at Netflix but would have to come up with his own Frankenstein design that doesn’t infringe the one copyrighted design by Universal Pictures.

There is now an assumption the design del Toro has landed on is from the late comic book artist Bernie Wrightson, who himself did illustrations for a version of the Frankenstein story (pictured in the above header image). His version of Dr. Frankenstein is the spitting image of Oscar Isaac, which could suggest that’s the role he’s been cast in. Wrightson also helped co-create DC Comics anti-hero “Swamp Thing,” a character that del Toro nearly put on the big screen in his incarnation of the “Dark Justice League” before he eventually moved on to other things.

Another tidbit about production was revealed too as they hope to get cameras rolling sometime in February, but likely will rely on the actors’ strike being resolved in the near future by the AMPTP offering/accepting a fair deal with the union.

Guillermo won an Oscar statue earlier this year for his other Netflix feature film, “Pinocchio.” And previously earned two other Oscars for “The Shape of Water” such as Best Picture and Best Director back in 2018, the filmmaker’s take on “The Creature From The Black Lagoon.”

‘The Killer’ Trailer: David Fincher Returns To Thrillers This Fall With Michael Fassbender Playing A Skilled Assassin

We’re about to see the start of the Venice Film Festival which includes the premiere of David Fincher‘s upcoming thriller “The Killer,” based on the French graphic novel (written by Alexis Nolent a.k.a Matz and illustrated by Luc Jacamon) with Michael Fassbender set to play a skilled assassin in the Netflix film. It will also see Fincher reuniting, yet again, with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross after previously working with the composing duo on films such as “Mank,” “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” “Gone Girl,” and “The Social Network.”

Ahead of the festival kicking off, Netflix has released some promotional materials for “The Killer” including a teaser poster and a first-look trailer (See both below). The rest of the cast consists of Tilda Swinton, Charles Parnell, Arliss Howard, Kerry O’Malley, Sophie Charlotte, Sala Baker, Emiliano Pernía, and Gabriel Polanco.

Netflix has provided us with the film’s official logline:

After a fateful near-miss, an assassin battles his employers and himself on an international manhunt he insists isn’t personal.

Fincher said the following about the film during a statement for the Venice Film Festival via ThePlaylist:

“‘The Killer’ is my attempt to reconcile notions I’ve had for years about cinematic stories and their telling. I have always held: “What were you doing in Chinatown?… As little as possible”—to be the single greatest evocation of backstory I’ve ever heard. I was also playfully curious about the revenge genre as a tension delivery system. So when Mr. Walker came aboard and fully embraced these notions/ questions about broad brushstrokes of understanding giving way to the blind stitch of “moment expansion” – I felt we needed to try something. Mr. Fassbender’s 3-hour response time for: “Yes, let’s!” sealed it for us both, and, of course, we all wanted Tilda (Mr. Walker wrote it with her in mind—but please don’t tell Ms. Swinton, she could become insufferable if she knows literally everyone feels this way about her.)

Guillermo del Toro’s Next Stop-Motion Film ‘The Buried Giant’ Officially Lands At Netflix

On the hells of the critical success of Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio with a Best Animated Feature Film nomination for next month’s Academy Awards ceremony, the genre filmmaker is looking to return to the world of stop-motion animation with another upcoming project titled The Buried Giant and based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro (Never Let Me Go). Previous reports had revealed del Toro is already working on a script with Dennis Kelly (UtopiaMatilda The Musical) and they’ll begin designing the film very soon with animation studio ShadowMachine reuniting with the director after working on Pinocchio.

Earlier in the week, it was officially announced by Netflix that The Buried Giant will indeed join the streaming service’s upcoming originals in development. The news was posted on the streamer’s official Twitter account (See Below).

In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven’t seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.

It’s unclear how long we’ll have to wait before an official release date for The Buried Giant as stop-motion animation is time consuming process, but this news gives the impression that Netflix is very much invested in more animated films from del Toro. He’s also reportedly attached to helm a new version of live-action Frankenstein film for them as well.

Netflix’s ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Series Aims To Begin Shooting This Summer In Toronto

Last month, it was revealed that Netflix is developing a drama series based on the PlayStation video game, Horizon Zero Dawn. Well, it looks like that “early development” is much further along than previously known. The Ronin can confirm that Netflix is going to shoot their Horizon series in Toronto and other locations in/around Ontario with filming said to be aiming for a start this August and wrap around late March of next year.

They’ve already started prep on Horizon with production designer Mark Steel, who previously worked on other Netflix projects like Locke & Key and The Umbrella Academy, joining the show’s production team.

We’re still waiting on news concerning showrunners, writers, directors and actors. But if they’re aiming to begin production in a month we should be getting those announcements in the near future.

Netflix’s latest batch of video game adaptations includes the Lance Reddick-fronted Resident Evil series, The Cuphead Show, an in-the-works Bioshock movie, and an animated Castlevania show. Other PlayStation live-action projects in the works are The Last of Us at HBO, God of War at Amazon Prime Video, Twisted Metal at Peacock, Neill Blomkamp is helming a Gran Turismo movie, and a Chad Stahleski-directed feature film adaptation of the popular samurai game Ghosts of Tsushima is also in the works.

In a world where Machines dominate the earth and mankind lives on in primitive tribal societies, one woman sets out to find her destiny among the remnants of the ancient past. As Aloy, you must brave the Machine-infested wilderness and unearth secrets that lie buried deep within the earth. Will you embrace your calling… or pass into oblivion unsung? The player uses ranged weapons, a spear, and stealth to combat mechanical creatures and other enemy forces. A skill tree provides the player with new abilities and bonuses.

EXCLUSIVE: Directors Andrew Stanton & Jeremy Podeswa Join Netflix’s Sci-Fi Series ‘Three-Body Problem’

The Ronin can reveal that two-time Oscar-winner Andrew Stanton and four-time Emmy-nominee Jeremy Podeswa have joined a group of directors being assembled for Netflix’s high-profile sci-fi series Three-Body Problem (based on the books by Chinese author Liu Cixin) that already had Derek Tsang (Better Days) and Minkie Spiro (The Plot Against America) set to helm multiple episodes.

Three-Body Problem’s creative team consists of writers and executive producers David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. They are joined by producers Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman, who were behind things like Looper, Knives Out, Glass Onion, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt or to fight against the invasion. The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision.

The growing cast includes Eiza Gonzalez, Benedict Wong, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Jonathan Pryce, Rosalind Chao, Ben Schnetzer, Jess Hong, Marlo Kelly, Alex Sharp, Sea Shimooka, Zine Tseng, Saamer Usmani, and Eve Ridley.

UPDATE: Costume designer Michael Wilkinson is also confirmed to be part of the crew. Wilkinson has previously worked on the Star Wars series Andor, Man of Steel, Justice League, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Watchmen, Aladdin, The Gentlemen, and 300.

Of course, Stanton has been a fixture at Pixar being behind things like Wall-E, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, and the Toy Story franchise. His recent television credits include For All Mankind, and the second season of Stranger Things. After directing Disney’s ambitious live-action John Carter movie, Stanton hit pause on feature film work as the sci-fi fantasy film became a legendary box office flop. There doesn’t seem to be much bad blood with Disney as Stanton recently reunited with them on the Star Wars streaming series Obi-wan Kenobi, writing the final two episodes.

Podesaw worked on six Game of Thrones episodes at HBO alongside Benioff/Weiss, The Pacific, Boardwalk Empire, and the post-apocalypse drama Station Eleven.

Netflix Announces They’re Developing Live-Action ‘BioShock’ Movie

After a failed attempt from director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of The Caribbean Trilogy, The Ring) to make a feature film based on the beloved sci-fi horror video game BioShock at Universal Pictures, Netflix has announced they’ll be attempting a new live-action film with the help of 2K and Take-Two Interactive. However, they don’t mention anyone who is writing or directing the project.

BioShock takes place in Rapture, a large underwater city planned and constructed in the 1940s by individualist business magnate Andrew Ryan, who wanted to create a utopia for society’s elite to flourish outside of government control and “petty morality”.

If they’re not able to get Verbinski back, it’s hard not to see how Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro (Nightmare Alley, The Shape of Water) couldn’t be the best person to bring this art deco world to life. Given that the filmmaker has been working closely with the streaming giant on multiple television projects and is the home of his upcoming stop-motion animation pic based on the classic fairytale, Pinocchio.

Below is the official press release from Netflix on the exciting news.

Netflix is partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a live-action film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.

Published by 2K, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive Software Inc., the award-winning and critically-acclaimed BioShock game franchise includes BioShock, BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite. Set across multiple dystopian and visionary landscapes gone wrong, the series blends sci-fi and horror to pose unique existential and societal questions that reshaped how game stories could be told – all amidst pulse-pounding action gameplay that rewards sharpshooting, clever planning, and lethal improvisation. Across the titles’ original releases as well as multiple re-releases, remastered editions and bundled collections, BioShock has sold more than 39 million copies worldwide, and is widely recognized as one of the most celebrated and beloved series in all of gaming. The next installment is currently in development by Cloud Chamber.

Guillermo del Toro Pitched Horror Pic ‘At The Mountains Of Madness’ To Netflix

Years ago, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water, Nightmare Alley) was prepping to make an expensive R-rated feature adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story At The Mountains of Madness at Universal Pictures with Tom Cruise attached in a lead role. However, the studio balked at the film’s $150+ million budget, and the project eventually dissolved.

The Barren, windswept interior of the Antarctic plateau was lifeless–or so the expedition from Miskatonic University thought. Then they found the strange fossils of unheard-of creatures…and the carved stones tens of millions of years old…and, finally, the mind-blasting terror of the City of the Old Ones.

Guillermo del Toro is out promoting his upcoming thriller, Nightmare Alley, and during a chat on Fangoria’s podcast The Kingcast (via The Playlist) revealed he’s pitched the project again to Netflix. The filmmaker added that he’d likely have to scale things back and give At The Mountains of Madness script a rewrite.

“The thing with ‘Mountains’ is the screenplay I co-wrote fifteen years ago is not the screenplay I would do now, so I need to do a rewrite. Not only to scale it down somehow but because back then I was trying to bridge the scale of it with elements that would make it go through the studio machinery.”

“I can go to a far more esoteric, weirder, smaller version of it. You know, where I can go back to some of the scenes that were left out. Some of the big set pieces I designed, for example, I have no appetite for. Like, I’ve already done this or that giant set piece. I feel like going into a weirder direction.”

The streaming giant and del Toro have a long-established working relationship with an anthology horror series currently shooting and co-directed a stop-motion animated version of Pinocchio as well. It’ll be interesting to see if Netflix will pony-up the money he’ll need to execute the project despite the talk about scaling things back.

Nightmare Alley will hit theaters on December 17.

NIGHTMARE ALLEY – An ambitious carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is.
