Long-Delayed ‘Masters Of The Universe’ Movie Remake From Director Travis Knight Heading To Theaters On June 5, 2026

Yesterday, it was announced by Amazon MGM Studios that they’ve secured a release date for their “Masters of The Universe” remake of the 1987 fantasy film spawned by the cartoon series and toyline from Mattel (also behind “Barbie”). A journey that goes back to 2007, when the first attempts to reboot started at Warner Bros. before it shuffled to Sony, Netflix, and finally landed at Amazon/MGM. It’s nabbed a prime release date of June 5, 2026, and we’ll eagerly wait for new casting announcements. The latest director assigned to the project is Travis Knight after having done his own soft-reboot of sorts with the ’80s-set “Transformers” movie, “Bumblebee.”

As mentioned in the report from Variety, this “Masters of the Universe” incarnation will “introduce a 10-year-old take on Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe!”

Chris Butler is writing the latest incarnation of the film’s screenplay, following initial drafts written by David Callaham (“Shang-Chi”) and the remake’s former directors, The Nee Brothers. Some of Butler’s previous work includes animated movies such as “ParaNorman,” “Kubo & The Two Strings,” and “Missing Link.”

More recently, filmmaker Kevin Smith (“Mallrats”) had been behind the revival of the animated series, “Masters of The Universe: Revelation,” which aired on Netflix. The streaming giant had previously been readying the remake before it pivoted to Amazon/MGM.

‘Masters Of The Universe’: Travis Knight In Final Talks To Direct He-Man Reboot At Amazon/MGM, Replacing The Nee Brothers

After multiple incarnations, delays, director switch-ups, and studio jumping it looks like the reboot of “Masters of The Universe” is finally coming together after Netflix gave the project the boot last year. A new report from Deadline has revealed that director Travis Knight (“Bumblebee”) is in final talks to helm the new cinematic incarnation of He-Man, which is expected to land at Amazon/MGM Studios. However, the report fails to mention who exactly plays the hulking hero as previous actor Kyle Allen is nowhere mentioned in the promising update.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Knight ends up hiring John Cena, who briefly appeared in “Barbie” this summer (another Mattel project) and had a rather big supporting part in “Bumblebee.” Cena has established himself as an action star via roles in “The Suicide Squad” ( Pacemaker getting his own Max spinoff series overseen by James Gunn) and the last two “Fast & Furious” installments.

Funny enough, I called Amazon potentially picking up the film last July. Hopefully, my John Cena recommendation is considered too.

The Nee Brothers had been previously attached to direct at Sony and Netflix before the recent version had moved to MGM/Amazon. Their version of the script they worked on with David Callaham (“Shang-Chi”) is also getting a rewrite from Chris Bulter (“Missing Link,” “ParaNorman,” & “Kubo & The Two Strings”), who has worked with Knight in the past.

Knight also comes from the world of animation with his delightful pic “Kubo & The Two Strings” being a masterstroke of stop-motion animation and should help attempt to bring an iconic animated superhero character to live-action after the long-forgotten 80s film that starred Dolph Lundgren.

Live-Action ‘She-Ra’ Series Being Developed By Amazon

A new report from Variety has revealed that a new live-action series with Masters of The Universe character She-Ra is in very early development at Amazon Studios with DreamWorks Animation producing the potential show.

Sadly, we’re not getting anything concerning potential creatives such as writers, directors or even who they’ll want to play She-Ra. It’ll be interesting how they’ll approach the character after Netflix’s recent animated series She-Ra & The Princesses of Power.

She-Ra & The Princesses of Power is set on the planet Etheria and follows the stories of Adora and Catra, orphans who were raised to be soldiers in the Horde. They are part of an evil army led by Hordak, a tyrannical despot who dreams of conquering the planet.

This would be the first time She-Ra was given a live-action adaptation, while He-Man has a feature film previously and a new one has stalled multiple times to the point it seems unlikely that will come together anytime soon.

It’ll be curious to see if She-Ra series happens before a He-Man movie goes into production.

She-Ra isn’t the only fantasy hybrid projects in the works with an animated ThunderCats film from Adam Wingard (Godzilla Vs. Kong) and Millennium Films is taking a crack at a brand new Red Sonja film with Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man & The Wasp, Residential Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City) playing the female warrior.

Amazon is also behind two high-profile fantasy series The Wheel of Time and Lord of The Rings, both have multiple season commitments. It’ll be interesting to see if Amazon’s version of She-Ra will skew as a mature incarnation or be developed for younger audiences.

‘Black Adam’ Reportedly Adds Noah Centineo As Atom Smasher

While it’s been ages since we’ve had an update concerning New Line Cinema’s DC Comics film Black Adam from director Jaume Collet-Serra. It looks like we have our first big casting addition since confirmation that Dwayne Johnson would be playing the titular character.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the studio has hired up-and-coming heartthrob Noah Centineo in the role of Atom Smasher, the DC character had been long rumored for the film.

Centineo will play Atom Smasher, a character who can control his molecular structure and is able to manipulate his size and strength.

Noah had been previously hired to play Prince Adam/He-Man in Sony’s long-delayed Masters of The Universe reboot film.

Black Adam is said to be shooting in Atlanta, Georgia. However, with the United States including Georgia seeing a massive uptick in new Coronavirus cases a production start anytime soon likely wouldn’t be smart or safe on the part of New Line Cinema.

I had also heard that a portion was expected to shoot in California, another state that is dealing with a wave of new cases.

Warner Bros. has given the film a release date of Decemeber 22nd, 2021. It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to stick that date if production is delayed into 2021.
