‘Dune: The Sisterhood’ Series Loses Director, Lead Actor & Co-Showrunner As Spinoff Gets Creative Overhaul

While Dune: Part Two completed it’s principal photography last year, the HBO Max series spinoff Dune: The Sisterhood coming from Legendary Television isn’t having the same kind of smooth develop or production process. A prequel series that started filming back in November that focuses on the influential Bene Gesserit (a religious sect of women with powers that inspired the Jedi) with the Harkonnen Sisters being some of the lead characters as the story takes place 10,000 years before the events of the films.

Deadline reports that the show is seeing even more turbulence and this time in front and behind the camera. Director Johan Renck (The Last of Us, Chernobyl) that had been tasked to shoot the first two episodes has now left. One of the lead actors on the show, Shirley Henderson had been tapped to play Tula Harkonnen but has also exited and her role will now be recast with someone else. Lastly, like that wasn’t enough of a headache co-showrunner Diane Ademu-John left ahead of production making Alison Schapker the sole showrunner on the prequel series. This has led to a production hiatus as the show is said to be undergoing a creative overhaul as Schapker is busy undergoing rewrites and production attempts to find a new director (possibly to reshoot those first two episodes).

The rest of the Dune: The Sisterhood cast includes Emily Watson, Indira Varma, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, and Chris Mason.

Dune: The Sisterhood is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Given extraordinary abilities by their mastery of the body and the mind, the Bene Gesserit expertly weave through the feudal politics and intrigue of The Imperium, pursuing plans of their own that will ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis, known to its inhabitants as Dune. It will serve as a prequel to the films.

This doesn’t give off confidence about the show, however, HBO Max is trying to downplay the latest round of musical chairs on the project as they made their own official statement on the reporting, confirming elements of it. In that statement, HBO Max says that Renck’s exit was mutual but the report suggests that his footage might not ultimately end up being used in the final show as they now are seeking a new director.

“As Dune: The Sisterhood has entered a pre-scheduled hiatus, there are some creative changes being made to the production in an effort to create the best series possible and stay true to the source material,” an HBO Max spokesperson told Deadline in a statement. “Johan Renck has completed his work on the series and a new director will be brought on; through mutual agreement, Johan is moving on to pursue other projects. Additionally, Shirley Henderson will be exiting the series and will no longer be playing Tula Harkonnen.”

This isn’t the first time there have been hiccups. Dune: Part One screenwriter Jon Spaihts (Prometheus) and Dana Calvo (Narcos) had been previously tasked to write/showrun the spinoff streaming series only for Spaihts to exit himself as Legendary/Warner Bros. fast-tracked Dune: Part Two, which is now in the post-production stage as it’s set to be released on November 3, 2023. Calvo would also quietly leave with Ademu-John and Schapker picking up the reigns. Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve was announced to direct the pilot until Renck was brought on to replace him. So, as you might imagine more drama wasn’t all that shocking for anyone following this project.

We likely won’t have to wait too long for another director to be announced as Legendary/HBO Max are hellbent on getting this right.

‘The Batman Part II’ Set For October 2025 & ‘The Penguin’ Spinoff Series Is Getting Eight Episodes

DC Studios recently announced their first big slate lineup this week as newly minted co-CEO James Gunn revealed to the world that they would making a new string of film and television projects within the DCU and other things set outside of the DCU being branded as “Elseworlds” like Matt ReevesThe Batman being part of that group alongside the Joker sequel.

The biggest sign of confidence for Reeves’ Gotham saga is that we’re going to see multitide of spinoffs and sequels. With the latter getting a title and release date as DC Studios announced that The Batman Part II will be heading back to theaters on October 3, 2025 and should reassure fans that had been worried that Reeves’ vision for follow-ups could have been tainted with DC Studios meddling or trying to merge that version of Batman into their DCU films. Thankfully, they cleared that up real quick by announcing a new Batman project with The Brave & The Bold, focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne as the new version of Robin.

That’s not all the Batman news going this week. Towards the end of the month, we’ll see the start of production of The Penguin spinoff series at HBO Max and star Colin Farrell has confirmed to Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast that they aiming to shoot eight episodes.

“It’s going to be an eight-part thing,” Farrell said on the podcast. “Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Penguin feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.”

We have to assume that Farrell will also be returning for The Batman Part II, given the series is expected to show his rise to become a major crime figure in Gotham by the time the sequel is released in 2025.

Live-Action ‘Blade Runner’ Series In The Works & Might Land 10-Episodes

There was some expectation that after Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, a sequel to Ridley Scott’s 1982 landmark sci-fi film Blade Runner, we’d get more live-action stories set in that fantastic universe but when Blade Runner 2049 didn’t light the box office on fire that seemed to be put on ice.

Director Denis Villeneuve had teased interest in returning to the franchise tackling a new story that wasn’t a direct sequel to 2049. Eventually, an anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus from Japan was produced and recently debuted on WarnerMedia’s Adult Swim.

However, Ridley Scott has revealed a live-action Blade Runner series in the works at Alcon with the pilot written and is eyeing a 10-episode run. Scott mentioned this on BBC Radio 4’s Today this Monday.

“We’re already into having written the pilot for Blade Runner and the bible, so we’re already presenting Blade Runner as a TV show, which will probably be the first 10 hours.”

The original Blade Runner is loosely based on Philip K. Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream of Electic Sheep? and was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples. It’s considered one of the most visually striking films ever made.

We’re still in the dark about who is writing the pilot and if it’ll land at HBO Max or elsewhere. It’s also unknown if we’ll continue on Earth as Los Angeles has been the primary setting or if we’ll finally explore the multiple off-world colonies. One of the biggest mysteries of the franchise is what the off-colonies look like along with how Replicants are forced into labor and warfare.

I have to assume WarnerMedia would be involved given rights holders Alcon had Warner Bros. distribute Blade Runner 2049 and Black Lotus at Adult Swim. Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series Raised By Wolves debuted at HBO Max’s launch and had been one of their most popular originals, leading to a season two order.

BLADE RUNNER – Deckard (Harrison Ford) is forced by the police Boss (M. Emmet Walsh) to continue his old job as Replicant Hunter. His assignment: eliminate four escaped Replicants from the colonies who have returned to Earth. Before starting the job, Deckard goes to the Tyrell Corporation and he meets Rachel (Sean Young), a Replicant girl he falls in love with.

BLADE RUNNER 2049 – Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.

‘Batgirl’: Brendan Fraser Reportedly Playing A Batman Villain In DC Comics Flick

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) are continuing their run of tackling female superheroes after directing episodes of Marvel’s series Ms. Marvel and will helm the upcoming Batgirl film that will be exclusively released on HBO Max.

Batgirl is a protege of Bruce Wayne’s Batman, similar to Robin/Nightwing.

Deadline is reporting on the first confirmed villain casting for the DC project, as Brendan Fraser (Killers of The Flower Moon, The Whale, No Sudden Move) is potentially playing Batman villain Firefly. The actor currently playing Robotman in the DC Comics series Doom Patrol, so he’s not new to the comic book universe.

Fraser joins Leslie Grace (In The Heights), who plays the titular Batgirl and J.K. Simmons reprises the Justice League role of Barbara Gordon’s father, Jim Gordon. This element would suggest that Batgirl takes place directly within the DCEU, given Simmons’ return. However, if they end up using Michael Keaton’s Batman as her mentor (teased by THR Keaton is involved), that could suggest that the cinematic universe is turning more into a hodgepodge of connective tissue.

Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys For Life) also has a mystery part in the superhero flick.

The Hollywood Reporter believes the role is Gotham criminal syndicate boss Carmine Falcone. The Batman rogue has been previously seen in Batman Begins and will be played by John Turturro in The Batman, neither are incarnations from the DCEU.

The Batgirl will be released sometime in 2022 on HBO Max.

David Chase In Talks For New ‘Sopranos’ Series At HBO Max & Wants To Do Another Prequel Movie

David Chase’s Sopranos previous film The Many Saints of Newark, left a lot to be desired as it felt like “Call-Back: The Movie” and for fans sort of simply rehashed stories told in the show rather than giving us something new.

Well, it’s starting to sound like Chase and WarnerMedia are inching closer to more Sopranos content in the near future. WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff spoke to Deadline revealing they are in active talks with David Chase about a new Sopranos-related series at HBO Max and that film’s poor box office wasn’t a huge factor.

“Yes, the box office was not quite as big, but back again to the demographics of whose going to theaters. On the other hand, you see Sopranos pop into the top 10 of the most viewed series on the service. It’s given it an entirely new life. We’re talking to David about a new series Sopranos related on HBO Max. It’s (the movie) literally lifted the Sopranos franchise in a new way, so you can’t measure it in and of itself in the box office,” Sarnoff revealed to Deadline.

Another movie could be on the way too.

Sopranos creator David Chase told Deadline that he’s interested in another prequel movie much like Many Saints of Newark.

It’s hard to imagine they wouldn’t attempt to flush-out young Tony, Johnny Boy, and Junior with this potential series, given the actors they’ve assembled it always felt like they were aiming to making stuff beyond The Many Saints of Newark. That’s unless they’ll attempt to go further back in time.

THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK – Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark, N.J., history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters start to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, whose influence over his nephew will help shape the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss, Tony Soprano.

‘Batgirl’ Movie Adds ‘Bad Boys For Life’ Actor Jacob Scipio In Mystery Role

After Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah recently teased the inclusion of Batman in their upcoming HBO Max film in a Dutch interview, a new bit of casting news has been announce today.

Deadline reports that actor Jacob Scipio, likely best known as the villain of Bad Boys For Life has nabbed an unknown part in the DC Comics project. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed the Bad Boys sequel before getting involved with Marvel’s Ms. Marvel series at Disney+.

Scipio joins Leslie Grace (In The Heights), who plays the titular Batgirl and J.K. Simmons reprises the Justice League role of Barbara Gordon’s father, Jim Gordon. This element would suggest that Batgirl takes place directly within the DCEU, given Simmons’ return. However, if they end up using Michael Keaton’s Batman as her mentor, that could suggest that the cinematic universe is turning more into a hodgepodge of connective tissue.

Christina Hodson, who recently wrote The Flash movie (just wrapped filming over the weekend) is behind the pic’s script.

Sadly, Batgirl is firmly at HBO Max and likely won’t be getting a theatrical release just like their Latinx superhero film Blue Beetle. The optics aren’t great that DC Films/WarnerMedia is dumping diverse superhero projects on a streaming service instead of giving them a traditional theatrical run.

A release date hasn’t been named but we’ll likely get a good look at the project in 2022.

‘House Of The Dragon’: HBO Adds Graham McTavish From ‘Hobbit’ Trilogy & ‘Outlander’ To ‘Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff

House of The Dragon is the next big installment of the Game of Thrones franchise from HBO and producer/creator George R.R. Martin, which is based on the prequel novel Fire & Blood that chronicles the Targaryens (House of The Dragon).

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

HBO has announced via The Hollywood Reporter that six more actors have joined the mature fantasy series with the standout being Scottish actor Graham McTavish, who had a supporting role in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy and might be better known for his role on the television series Outlander.

Check out the roles and character descriptions from HBO.

Ryan Corr (Holding the Man) as Ser Harwin ‘Breakbones’ Strong — ‘Breakbones’, Harwin is said to be the strongest man in the Seven Kingdoms. Ser Harwin is the eldest son to Master of Laws Lyonel Strong and heir to Harrenhal.

Jefferson Hall (Vikings) as Lord Jason Lannister — the Lord of Casterly Rock and twin to Ser Tyland Lannister. Jefferson Hall as Tyland Lannister — a crafty and calculating politician, twin to Lord Jason Lannister.

David Horovitch (Miss Marple) as Grand Maester Mellos — a voice of reason and trusted advisor to King Viserys.

Graham McTavish (Outlander) as Ser Harrold Westerling — Ser Harrold has served in the Kingsguard since the days of King Jaehaerys; he is a paragon of chivalry and honor.

Matthew Needham (Chernobyl) as Larys Strong — younger son of Master of Laws Lyonel Strong, brought to court by his father.

Bill Paterson (Fleabag) as Lord Lyman Beesbury — Lord of Honeyholt and Master of Coin on King Viserys’s small council.

Gavin Spokes (Hamilton) as Lord Lyonel Strong — Master of Laws to King Viserys and Lord of Harrenhal.

The rest of the cast consists of Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower, Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon (The Sea Snake), Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower (The Hand of the King), Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Milly Alcock as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, and Emily Carey as Young Alicent Hightower.

Martin recently signed a five-year deal with HBO and could see even more Game of Thrones projects being developed. There have been previous reports that George R.R. Martin’s Knight of The Seven Kingdoms will be turned a series, titled Tales of Dunk & Egg, along with other projects in development such as Sea Snake aka The 9 Voyages, 10,000 Ships, and three animated projects as one will focus on The Grand Empire of Yi Ti (a fantasy version of Imperial China).

A Flea Bottom show has been killed by HBO, we’ll likely see more projects not make the finish line. The Long Night/Bloodmoon was a prequel series about the origin of The White Walkers that only shot a pilot and didn’t get a series pick-up.

House of The Dragon will begin airing sometime in 2022.

Robert Rodriguez Signs First-Look Deal With HBO & HBO Max: Will He Tackle DC Comics Projects?

WarnerMedia has announced via The Hollywood Reporter that they’ve striked a two year first-look deal with Robert Rodriguez and his Austin-based Troublemaker Studios. He’ll specifically develop various film and television projects for HBO/HBO Max.

The filmmaker had this to say about the deal:

“It’s intriguing to be able to tap into the wealth of iconic IP available across the WarnerMedia portfolio and explore new stories to tell. I’m looking forward to a meaningful collaboration with the high caliber creative talent at HBO and HBO Max who have proven they’re willing to take risks, challenge norms and tell inclusive stories while producing a wide breadth of quality content.”

We previously saw J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot’s deal with WarnerMedia leading to them tackle a wave of DC Comics projects such as Justice League Dark, Constintine, Madame X, and producing a new Superman film.

It wouldn’t be shocking to see Rodriguez/Troublemaker Studios attempt to adapt various comic book projects given their experience with existing material. They were behind films such as Predators, Sin City, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, and Alita: Battle Angel. Robert was once approached by Ryan Reynolds and 20th Century Fox to direct the first installment of Deadpool, but declined.

Most recently Robert Rodriguez was working with Lucasfilm on Star Wars shows such as The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

There are plenty DC Comics projects Rodriguez could end up bringing to life such as various movies that had been gestating at Warner Bros. for ages such as Lobo (Guy Ritchie formerly attached to direct), Sgt. Rock (Quentin Tarantino was offered it), and Deathstroke (The Raid’s Gareth Evans was developing at one point).

Hopefully, this is a sign that James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is giving WarnerMedia the impression they can continue to keep making mature projects based on their IP.

Like Gunn, Rodriguez has a unique style and vision that clearly is imprinted on his inventive/energetic R-rated action projects such as Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, Planet Terror, Machete, and Machete Kills. Applying that to the DCEU could only make for exciting and entertaining adaptations.

‘Blue Beetle’: ‘Cobra Kai’ Actor Xolo Maridueña Confirms He’s Playing Jaime Reyes In New DC Comics Movie

Batgirl won’t be the only DC Comics movie heading to HBO Max.

It was announced a while back that director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) had been hired for the upcoming Blue Beetle movie from Warner Bros. and DC Films with filming said to be aiming for early next year after previous reports claimed a fall shoot.

The Wrap is echoing previous indications that Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) is in talks with Warner Bros. to play Jamie eyes aka Blue Beetle. Big Screen Leaks had pointed towards the actor potentially taking the DC Comics role back in June.

Xolo Maridueña has confirmed this new with multiple posts on his Instagram stories saying, “I’m a frigging superhero dog, what the fuck?” In a video post at a screening for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) is writing the film and recently worked on the latest Scarface incarnation for director Luca Guadagnino.

A release date for Blue Beetle has yet to be announced but early 2023 is a good bet.

Michael B. Jordan Developing New ‘Superman’ Project At HBO Max That Will Focus On Val-Zod

It’s been long rumored that Michael B. Jordan was in the mix for a new Superman project at Warner Bros. and it looks like the details have finally been revealed thanks to a new report from the folks over at Collider.

Michael B. Jordan and his production company Outlier Society are developing their own Black Superman project for HBO Max that centers on the Val-Zod incarnation of the character, Collider has exclusively learned.

However, despite having an unnamed writer working on this new Val-Zod Superman project, they’re not entirely sure if this will end up a series or film. DC Comics adaptations at HBO Max have been both series and films, making it’s difficult to get a beat on what is happening with this new Superman thing. Films focused on Zatanna and Batgirl are moving forward alongside series such as Peacemaker, Gotham P.D., Green Lantern, a Constantine reboot, Justice League Dark, and more.

Jordan is also involved with a live-action Static Shock film as well. The actor is attached to star in a Rainbow Six movie as a follow-up to Without Remorse and will lead the second remake of The Thomas Crown Affair for AGBO (The Russo Brothers’ production company).

Warner Bros. is also developing a new Superman feature film with a script from writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and producer J.J. Abrams via Bad Robot. Coates is best-known for his work on the fantastic modern run of Black Panther comics for Marvel. This film would be separate from the HBO Max incarnation from Michael B. Jordan.

Having two new Superman projects in the works and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl making her debut in The Flash (A solo Supergirl film has been in development for years now), could mean that WarnerMedia is open to the idea of many different Superman incarnations happening all at once.
