‘Lanterns’: Aaron Pierre & Stephan James Are Reportedly Finalists To Play John Stewart In DC Comics Series

We have our Hal Jordan, and now it looks like HBO and DC Studios are zeroing in on who will play fellow Earthling Geen Lantern, John Stewart. A new report from Deadline reveals that actors Aaron Pierre (“Rebel Ridge”) and Stephan James (“Race”) are being positioned as the two finalists to take the John Stewart part in the upcoming DCU series, “Lanterns.”

I’ve been personally campaigning on Twitter all month for Pierre to get the role of Stewart and even suggested him recently when the news broke earlier in the week that Kyle Chandler (“Bloodline”) was in talks to play Hal Jordan. The British actor isn’t a stranger to comic book projects as he appeared in the short-lived “Superman” prequel series “Krypton” before being tapped by Marvel Studios to join the cast of “Blade” in a supporting role, only for him to exit the reboot.

James is a Canadian actor, most notably playing US Olympic athlete Jesse Owens in the biopic “Race” and the Chadwick Boseman NYC thriller “21 Bridges.”

“Snowfall” actor Damson Idris, a talented young actor on the rise, was also in the mix but is no longer in the running.

It won’t be long before we find out who has nabbed the Green Lantern role that is assumed to be also part of the new “Justice League” lineup once DC Studio figures out when they want to make that DCU event film. Possibly in a couple of years to give the audience time to reset from the previous incarnation.

Former Batman Contender Matthias Schoenaerts Tapped To Play ‘Supergirl’ Villain In New DCU Movie

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has landed its second actor as DC Studios, and Warner Bros. has selected the person who will play the reboot’s main villain. Deadline has revealed that Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Old Guard”) has been tapped, assuming the part will be Krem of The Yellow Hills from the comic book the studio is adapting for this new off-world adventure.

According to director Zack Snyder, Schoenaerts had been once considered to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League” had Ben Affleck backed out of the role. So, returning to the world of DC Comics is certainly a full-circle moment for the Belgian actor. He was recently seen alongside actress Kate Winslet in the HBO series “The Regime.”

Of course, this isn’t the first casting on the film as fellow HBO alumni Milly Alcock from “House of The Dragon” was previously announced as the titular superhero.

Aussie filmmaker Craig Gillespie (“Cruella,” ‘Dumb Money,” “I, Tonya”) is set in the director’s chair for the superhero flick that is currently eying a January start in England and was previously announced to have a June 26, 2026, release date.

More casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks and months, leading up to the production start next year.

‘Lanterns’: Kyle Chandler Reportedly In Talks To Play Hal Jordan In New DCU Series

After many rumored and reported names being linked to the role of Hal Jordan in “Laterns,” a new DC Comics series focusing on the pairing of Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as DC Studios attempts to reboot the “Green Lantern” franchise set within the newly formed DCU.

Deadline is reporting that veteran actor Kyle Chandler is currently in talks with DC Studios/HBO for the Jordan part. Chandler is a well-known actor with a string of popular credits that include roles in things like “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Manchester By The Sea,” and the “Godzilla” franchise.

However, “in talks” doesn’t mean he’s 100% in the role just yet.

We’re still waiting for information on who could be possibly playing Stewart, we’ll keep our fingers crossed they try to approach “Rebel Ridge” breakout actor Aaron Pierre.

The creative team behind “Lanterns” consists of Chris Mundy (“Ozark”), Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen”), and comic book writer Tom King.

“Green Lantern” follows human heroes that are selected by a group of cosmic-powered space cops, The Green Lantern Corps, who use power rings to defeat evil within the galaxy and are assigned to certain sectors. There is an expectation that Jordan is going to be the mentor of Stewart in this new series.

A synopsis provided by Deadline’s report reads as follows:

“New recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

The series, which will air on HBO, previously got an eight-episode order back in June. THR adds that filming on the show is expected to take place from January to June in Atlanta, Georgia.

James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Reboot Adds Wendell Pierce In Perry White Role As Production Begins In Atlanta

This week marks the production start of James Gunn‘s first big DCU installment with his “Superman” reboot. Cameras are rolling in Atlanta as the writer/director posted a teaser image of the new costume (See below) and a new addition to the cast has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. They’ve learned that “The Wire” and “Jack Ryan” actor Wendell Pierce has landed the role of Perry White, the boss of Lois Lane and Clark Kent at The Daily Planet.

The rest of the cast of Superman consists of David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer).

We’re still waiting on who Gunn has selected to play Ma and Pa Kent, the adoptive Earthbound parents of Clark. There is also a chance that the DCU’s new Supergirl actress Milly Alcock (“House of The Dragon”) might be teased or appear in the upcoming flick before her solo movie.

“Superman” is set to be released on July 11, 2025, in that same month we’ll be getting “Jurassic World 4” from Gareth Edwards (“Rogue One”) and Marvel’s highly-anticipated “Fantastic Four” reboot.

‘Logan’ Director James Mangold Tapped For Horror-Centric ‘Swamp Thing’ Movie Based On Alan Moore Run

Earlier this week, the first wave of new DC Studios projects were finally announced and one of the more interesting standouts from that upcoming Gods & Monsters 2025-2027 slate included a horror film focused on the underrated DC Comics character, Swamp Thing. It really didn’t take long for a creative to be attached to the new comic book project.

We ended up seeing director James Mangold (Ford v Ferrari) tweet out a comic book image from Swamp Thing and led to co-CEO James Gunn to retweet that post. Only for the The Hollywood Reporter to reveal that Mangold was indeed in early talks to write/direct a new feature film remake. This news was a bit of surprise that it simply wasn’t mentioned in that big announcement from Tuesday, but neat none-the-less.

Mangold isn’t exactly known for his horror chops but has a fantastic library of pulpy credits which includes two comic book films with the Hugh Jackman-led pics The Wolverine and Logan. The two X-Men films certainly inspired by established comics but also were given a more origin spin by the filmmaker making them slightly more unique. He most recently worked with Lucasfilm’s final installment of the Indiana Jones franchise starring Harrison Ford with Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny that is due to be released this July.

Given that the we’re expected to play within the horror genre, we’re hopeful that Mangold will take cues from other body horror movies like The Thing and The Fly for inspiration.

Gunn also recently added on Twitter that the upcoming film will indeed be inspired by the Alan Moore run of the character. Previous comic book properties that have been adapted from Moore’s work consists of Watchmen, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and V For Vendetta. However, the writer is well-known as being completely adverse to his source material being touched by Hollywood and likely won’t be supporting this project either.

Swamp Thing isn’t some new undiscovered property but certainly has had an odd go when it comes to live-action adaptations. The 1982 live-action film was written and directed by legendary horror director Wes Craven, that version led to a sequel, television show, and a cartoon series as well. It wouldn’t be until 2019 that producer James Wan (Aquaman) attempted a revival for the now dead DC Universe streaming service via his production company Atomic Monster after a version of Justice League Dark (that would have included the character) fell apart.
