‘Predator 5’ Officially Announced With Director Dan Trachtenberg Attached – Won’t Be A Continuation of ‘The Predator’

Deadline has announced a huge update concerning the future of the Predator franchise as Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) has been hired by 20th Century Studios/Disney to direct an untitled Predator 5 that will have a script from Patrick Aison (Treadstone, Jack Ryan).

The film isn’t expected to be a sequel to Shane Black’s soft-reboot The Predator.

Apparently, Discussing Film caught-wind of the project’s production grid information almost a entire year ago and didn’t make the connection it was part of the Predator franchise as it was under the working title of Skulls (the Predator collects skulls).

…will follow a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior.

It’s unconfirmed if Skulls’ logline is the official one they’ll actually be using as that information is year old and could have changed since then as films normally do over a year or more of development/script changes. The Predator and Alien franchises always have multiple incarnations in the development stages before the cameras roll on each installment.

However, the crux of Skulls does sound very similar to Machiko Noguchi, a Japanese human character that is inducted into a predator tribe after proving herself worthy.

A new Predator film so soon have the box office disaster of 2018’s The Predator would obviously signal Disney’s commitment to continuing 20th Century Studios’ legacy franchises and might mean that new Alien projects could be next.

They’re already moving forward with a new Planet of The Apes film from director Wes Ball along with a new spec-script for Alien V from franchise screenwriters/executive producers David Giler and Walter Hill.

First Official Look At ‘Avatar 2’ Villain General Ardmore Played By ‘Sopranos’ Actress Edie Falco

The official Avatar twitter account has posted the first official look at Edie Falco’s General Ardmore in the form of a behind the scenes set photo. The General is the new head of RDA’s operations on Pandora and likely will be behind the underwater missions.

Here’s a behind the scenes still of Edie Falco as General Ardmore, the new head of RDA activity on Pandora.

There is an assumption that the General will be the new villain given that the military forces will likely want a little payback for ouster of their cohorts and the dismantling of the mining operations on Pandora. Hopefully, we’ll get to explore a lot more of the RDA/military side of the franchise which I feel was little bit lacking in Avatar. I assume because they really had planned on spending more time world building for the Na’vi and Pandora.

We learned recently the RDA’s new base of operations will be called Bridgehead after Hell’s Gate was overtaken by rebellion forces.

It’s interesting because there is an expectation that Stephen Lang’s bombastic/intimidating Colonel Quaritch will be making a comeback as well, despite dying in the first film. I’m slightly curious if they’ll be resurrecting him through cloning methods given this has been established with the avatars in the previous film.

It might be a while before we get an official trailer for Avatar 2 given that the film won’t be released until December 16th, 2022 after production delays. However, James Cameron recently said they completed live-action filming for Avatar 2 and almost fully done with Avatar 3.

We’ll have to wait to hear if they’ll be moving on to start shooting Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 either motion capture or live-action portions considering that motion capture was mostly taking place in California and live-action in Wellington, New Zealand.

Ridley Scott and Joaquin Phoenix To Reunite On Napoleon Film ‘Kitbag’ For 20th Century Studios

Deadline reports that Ridley Scott has completed his period drama The Last Duel and will next move on to his Gucci crime film starring Lady Gaga, but has also lined up his project after that as well with a period epic titled Kitbag for 20th Century Studios.

The Napoleon project will star Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix as the French military leader and emperor, the pair previously worked together on the Oscar-winning film Gladiator.

The film is an original and personal look at Napoleon’s origins and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor, viewed through the prism of his addictive and often volatile relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. The intention of the film is to capture Napoleon’s famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.

The script was penned by David Scarpa, who previously wrote on All The Money In The World, a version of the upcoming Cleopatra film, and episodes of The Man In The High Castle.

Despite the myth, the French leader was not short but of average height.

One of the most famous unmade Stanley Kubrick films was also going to focus on Napoleon and more recently had been planned as HBO mini-series from Cary Joji Fukunaga (No Time To Die, True Detective) using Kubrick’s research as inspiration with Steven Spielberg producing.

Ridley will begin filming Gucci for MGM in Italy starting in March and when Kitbag is aiming to start shooting is a little unclear. Joining that Gucci cast led by Lady Gaga includes Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Adam Driver and Jared Leto.

Katherine Waterston Hopeful Daniels Is Still Alive For Another ‘Alien’ Film From Ridley Scott

While speaking with The Playlist, Alien: Covenant actress Katherine Waterston reaffirmed a desire to reprise the role of Daniels for another Alien prequel film, if her character is still alive.

PLAYLIST: Would you make another Alien movie?

WATERSTON: “In a heartbeat. I loved working with Ridley and I loved playing that part. I hope we can! I would love it! I hope she’s still alive!”

Katherine isn’t speaking out of school questioning if Daniels is still alive as they killed Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw off-screen when she was supposed to return in a bigger role originally in earlier incarnations of Alien: Covenant.

However, Ridley Scott spoke with Forbes recently where he suggested that if he makes another Alien film it might deviate from the last two installments and might not even connect to them.

SCOTT: “That’s in process. We went down a route to try and reinvent the wheel with Prometheus and Covenant. Whether or not we go directly back to that is doubtful because Prometheus woke it up very well. But you know, you’re asking fundamental questions like, ‘Has the Alien himself, the facehugger, the chestburster, have they all run out of steam? Do you have to rethink the whole bloody thing and simply use the word to franchise?’ That’s always the fundamental question.”

ALIEN: COVENANT – Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, members (Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup) of the colony ship Covenant discover what they think to be an uncharted paradise. While there, they meet David (Michael Fassbender), the synthetic survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. The mysterious world soon turns dark and dangerous when a hostile alien life-form forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival.

James Cameron Says ‘Avatar 2’ Has Finished Filming In New Zealand and ‘Avatar 3’ Is 95% Done

During a one-on-one chat with Arnold Schwarzenegger on Arnold’s YouTube channel, director James Cameron has announced how much of his Avatar sequels (four of them) have completed filming at this point. You might remember that production halted just before everyone in the crew was going to return to New Zealand’s Stone Street Studios in Wellington, to do some extensive live-action shooting for Avatar 2 and Avatar 3.

Here is what Jim had to say about the status of the two upcoming Avatar films during his chat with the Terminator franchise actor. As it sounds like the filming portion for both films is almost completed.

CAMERON: “Well, COVID hit us like it hit everyone. We lost about four and a half months of production as a result of that we’ve rolled around one more full year for a release in December of 2022. That’s been announced already but that doesn’t mean I have an extra year to finish the film because the day we deliver Avatar 2 we’ll just start working on Avatar 3.”

“So, where we are right now, I’m down in New Zealand shooting the remainder of the live-action we’ve got 10% left to go. We’re 100% complete on Avatar 2 and we’re sort of 95% compete on Avatar 3.

“We’re very lucky in that we chose [New Zealand] as our production site years ago.”

There is still a heap of post-production work to finish on the two massive movies and Cameron will then expectedly move into making Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 next.

Avatar 2 has new release date of December 16th, 2022 and Avatar 3 is set for December 20th, 2024.

‘New Mutants’ Earns A Paltry $7M After Dismal Reviews and PR Blunders – Another Sour Note As Fox’s X-Men Era Comes To An End

Wow, it’s been months since I’ve tackled a box office article, but here we go!

New Mutants had to fight off persistent and incorrect rumors that the film would be simply thrown on the Disney+ streaming service, bypassing a traditional theatrical release. It did magically avoid a streaming dump but hasn’t avoided what looks to be one of the worst PR blunders running up to a major film’s release in recent memory.

First, during the media rounds, writer/director Josh Boone did a piss-poor job defending the white-washing of Roberto aka Sunspot to io9, who is dark-skinned Afro-Brazilian in the comic books. Alice Braga playing another traditionally dark-skinned character with Dr. Cecilia Reyes was another example of the director/studio white-washing these X-Men characters.

New Mutants co-creator Bob McLeod voiced his concern with the white-washing on social media, while also pointing out the film misspelled his name in the credits to “Bob Macleod” and lamented that this was forever cemented in the film.

Josh Boone and Fox had been mostly concerned about getting Bill Sienkiewicz’s approval for the film having him get involved with the promotion and marketing of the film.

The film also got tagged for Anya Taylor-Joy’s Magik making odd racial remarks towards Native American character Danni Moonstar, played by Blu Hunt.

Take this Vulture report with a grain of salt, but they claim that 20th Century Fox had originally hated the original version of the film so much they had planned on reshooting the entire thing. These expensive reshoot plans were seemingly scrapped after the merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox last year was finalized.

Boone and his co-writer, Knate Lee, were reluctant or outright unwilling to implement such script changes requested by the studio, requiring round after round of rewrites and one intervention-like roundtable read just before filming. Once principal photography was finished, Fox was so displeased with the initial cut the studio discussed throwing the entire movie out to “start over” with a total reshoot.

This could explain why it took so long for the film to get released.

Many outlets flat-out refused to review New Mutants at all citing unsafe environments for employees and that 20th Century Studios didn’t provide reviewers with safe screening options to review their film. This combination didn’t bode well for the film as it’s Rotten Tomatoes critics score currently is at 32% with an audience score of 53%.

The box office returns this weekend aren’t great either. Deadline reports the film’s estimated domestic earnings for the weekend will be around $7 million, which is nothing to get excited about. This makes New Mutants the new reigning champion of the lowest box office opening for an X-Men film surpassing the previous record holder, Dark Phoenix, that earned $32.8 million.

The outlet also points out that only 62% of cinemas are open in the U.S. with capacity restrictions in the range of 25-50%. It begs the question, why are studios even attempting to release expensive films at this point in the pandemic?

For some comparison, Russell Crowe’s low-budget thriller Unhinged made $4 million last weekend and didn’t have anything close to the marketing campaign as New Mutants.

It’s worth no witing that film’s budget is said to be in the realm of $100 million and the estimated $7 million domestic opening weekend is likely going to signal the film might not even be able to cover its budget let alone the marketing costs to turn a profit.

These low box office earnings are a direct result of the pandemic and an industry desperate to get back on its feet, despite being in the middle of a pandemic and going to the theater is still a massive risk to personal health to yourself/loved ones.

Looking at this as “a good start” for the return of movies isn’t a constructive perspective, it’s just making excuses when studios releasing pricey films in this environment are more than likely not going to turn a profit from box office sales alone and seriously puts the theater industry in more peril in the future by not giving studios incentives to keep films in their 2020 release dates.

We’ve already seen Paramount Pictures move the October release date of their G.I. Joe film Snake Eyes to October 22nd, 2021, and I suspect we’ll see more fall films jump to 2021.

I was really rooting for the film but this would certainly cement that Marvel Studios has zero plans to continue this franchise with sequels or connecting it to the great Marvel Cinematic Universe. Letting the Fox era of the X-Men just end might be a good idea as it allows Marvel the creative freedom to do a complete reboot of all these characters eventually.

Fresh Concept Artwork From ‘Avatar’ Sequels – New RDA Aquatic Vehicle Called The Crabsuit Revealed

The official Avatar Twitter account has dropped two new pieces of concept artwork from the upcoming films, this time highlighting a brand new RDA submersible vehicle called The Crabsuit.

The Crabsuit: A human driven multifunction submersible. One of the many new RDA vehicles that will be seen in the Avatar sequels.

It seems like they’ve sort of used the cockpit from the C-21 Dragon Assault Ship from the first movie. The Sea Dragon was another vehicle previously revealed through set photos.

James Cameron and the team recently resumed the live-action portion of filming at Stone Street Studios in Wellington, New Zealand.

However, it was officially announced that the release date would be getting pushed back an entire year because of the production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here are those new release dates.

  • AVATAR 2 – 12/16/22
  • AVATAR 3 – 12/20/24
  • AVATAR 4 – 12/18/26
  • AVATAR 5 – 12/22/28

Matthew Vaughn Considers Directing ‘Kingman 3’ Himself Over Someone Else and Says ‘The King’s Man’ Plants Seeds For Third Movie

In a new interview with Empire, co-writer/director Matthew Vaughn suggests he is now considering directing Kingsman 3 himself. There had been chatter a while back that they were courting Scottish director Jon S. Baird (Filth) before these new comments from Vaughn that he might end up tackling it.

After initially planning to hand the third Harry Hart-Eggsy adventure off to another director, Vaughn is now considering helming that next instalment himself.

VAUGHN: “I actually don’t know what I want to do,” he says. “There is an opportunity for a director to really change it up, but I’m considering it.”

Matthew reveals what we’ve all assumed that The King’s Man will help set up Kingsman 3

VAUGHN: “We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in Kingsman 3 all the way back into this,” confirms Vaughn. “And it’s going to be very different.”

At one point, we theorized that the villainous Shepherd in The King’s Man could be related to Eggsy and lead to himself learning about a very despicable family tree.

Vaughn also confirms that he had to cut 40 minutes from The King’s Man and teases a director’s cut with the extra footage that could come together in the future with an extended cut.

However, Matthew’s tidbit about directing Kingsman 3 doesn’t sound like it has been cemented and Baird could very well end up still doing it. His work on the James McAvoy film Filth would suggest he could be an excellent successor.

Colin Firth and Targon Egerton are attached to reprise their roles for the third untitled film.

20th Century Studios and Disney still has The King’s Man set to release on September 18th but things could change due to the pandemic.

Boyd Holbrook Reflects On The Disappointment of ‘The Predator’

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new Quibi series The Fugitive, actor Boyd Holbrook reflected on the disappointing audience reaction to The Predator, the fourth film in the solo Predator franchise.

THR: Through no fault of your own, The Predator didn’t go as everyone had planned, but looking back, was it one of those classic Hollywood examples of too many cooks in the kitchen?

HOLBROOK: “I just think the first one [Predator] caught lightning in a bottle. And with people wanting to do more, maybe you should just let a sleeping dog lie, sometimes. That was a big takeaway for me.”

The film having multiple endings to set up sequels, forcing so much awkward comedic moments, and third act reshoots removing some awesome scenes with predators fighting alongside humans. It seems like the script and editing process was a giant mess that is fully on display when you watch the film.

Not to mention the film’s budget-saving setting of a small town that just echoed the horrid Alien vs Predator: Requiem.

Ultimately, it doesn’t look like 20th Century Studios/Disney is considering sequels or new installments anytime soon.

Emma Watts Becomes President of Paramount Motion Pictures Group – Former Head of 20th Century Studios

Former 20th Century Fox executive Emma Watts has been previously named the successor to Stacey Snider as the president of production at 20th Century Studios, while Disney took reigns of the legendary film studio. In January, Watts resigned her position at 20th Century and according to Deadline has found a new home at Paramount.

Emma has taken the role of president at Paramount Motion Pictures group starting on July 20th and will directly report to Paramount Pictures Chairman/CEO Jim Gianopulos.

Wyck Godfrey, the current president, will be returning to produce film and television.

This is exciting news for both Watts and Paramount, as she has an excellent eye for projects having produced films such as The Martian, Deadpool, Logan, Avatar and Ford v. Ferrari.

The next big project at Paramount will be Martin Scorsese’s $200 million-plus budgeted crime thriller Killers of The Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, which will be co-financed by Apple.

Paramount has been in a rut for the last couple of years after losing the distribution on the Marvel Studios films to Disney. Along with having a tough time competing with other studios despite their success with franchises like Transformers and Mission: Impossible. Not to mention expensive action projects like Ghost In The Shell, Gemini Man, and Terminator: Dark Fate losing them a lot of money when they didn’t perform at the global box office as expected.

Hopefully, Emma Watts can attract directors and high-end projects to the studio that will get audiences excited.
