‘No Time To Die’ Crosses $700M At Global Box Office

While No Time To Die, the 25th installment of the James Bond franchise has been doing okay domestically, it’s been hitting some excellent numbers overseas. The massive action pic has now crossed the $700 million-dollar mark at the global box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, the final outing for Daniel Craig has already nabbed $708.6 million at the global box office with domestic earnings of $150.4 million and international at an impressive $558.1 million.

It’s currently trailing Skyfall and Spectre’s box office, making it the third most successful Bond movie. Quite an accomplishment given theaters are still trying to make a comeback from the pandemic.

NO TIME TO DIE – Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Daniel Craig returns as James Bond, Lea Seydoux as Madeleine Swann, Rami Malek (Bohemian Rapsody) as a new villain named Safin (Dr. No?), Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Felix Leiter, Ralph Fiennes (The King’s Man) as M, Christoph Waltz returning as Spectre’s Blofeld, Naomie Harris as Moneypenny, Lashana Lynch (Captain Marvel) as Nomi aka the new Agent 007, Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049) as Paloma, Ben Whishaw as Q, Billy Magnussen, Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner, David Dencik, and Dali Benssalah.

‘Star Wars’: Are The Knives Out For Rian Johnson’s Trilogy & Patty Jenkin’s ‘Star Wars: Rogue Squadron’?

Lucasfilm and the Disney era of Star Wars have had a contentious relationship in the development and execution of their feature films. We’ve seen plenty of examples of this with Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi movies between retooled as Disney+ shows as they ditched the A Star Wars Story wave of movies entirely after Solo: A Star Wars Story didn’t do stellar business at the box office.

There is a new rumor/report coming from Matthew Belloni (former The Hollywood Reporter editor) at Puck stating that both Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron (only announced last December) and Rian Johnson’s original trilogy have been shelved at Lucasfilm.

The reason for Rogue Squadron seems to be down to Jenkins and Lucasfilm brass being unable to agree upon a script. Filming had been expected to begin next year at Pinewood Studios UK and this would mean that the studio might have to select a replacement project to appease Disney or forego their December 2023 release spot for the next Star Wars movie.

I talked to a few insiders this week that said the real culprit was the dreaded “creative differences”; specifically, Jenkins couldn’t agree on the script with Lucasfilm executives, including senior V.P. Michelle Rejwan. That’s not unusual, of course, but it’s a laughably recurring problem at Lucasfilm under president Kathleen Kennedy, say agents: Top filmmakers are dying to make a Star Wars movie—until they sign on and experience the micromanagement and plot-point-by-committee process. It happened to the Game of Thrones guys, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who were hired to create a new trilogy but bailed. It also happened to Rian Johnson, writer and director of 2017’s The Last Jedi, whose own planned trilogy was shelved.

It’s been rumored for ages that Johnson’s trilogy has been scrapped only for the filmmaker to debunk reports online and unclear if this rumbling is real or not. Time will tell.

Could it be a case of Disney and Lucasfilm caving to the Fandom Menace? The vocal minority within the Star Wars fandom had been quite vocal of their distaste for Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi and the idea of a female director handling a Star Wars film or anything female-centric.

To be fair, the outlet doesn’t have the most favorable opinion of Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy if their headline is any indication, which skews a bit hyperbolic. They’re actively pushing the idea of removing her from the Star Wars franchise, despite the report also mentioning a contract extension adding another three years to her tenure at Lucasfilm, so her removal won’t be happening.

WandaVision’s Kathryn Hahn was announced to lead her own series from Jac Schaeffer and Marvel Studios has given the Disney+ live-action project the title of Agatha: House of Harkness. They also announced two new animated series, Marvel Zombies and Spider-Man: Freshman Year.

Here’s how Marvel Studios describes the projects:

The animated series from Marvel Studios reimagines the Marvel Universe as a new generation of heroes battle against an ever-spreading zombie scourge. Directed by Executive Producer Bryan Andrews and written by Executive Producer Zeb Wells.

The animated series follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots. Written by Executive Producer Jeff Trammel.

‘X-Men ’97’ Will Be Disney+ Revival Of Popular 1990s ‘X-Men’ Cartoon

There has been talk of a revival of the beloved X-Men cartoon series from Fox Kids in the 1990s, it goes back to director and producer Larry Houston stating back in 2020 he was talking with Disney about the possibility.

Well, it looks like that animated revival is indeed moving forward.

The GWW was first to mention that a new X-Men cartoon was in the works for Disney+ and there has been confirmation from The Wrap that it is indeed happening, adding more concrete details that it will be a revival titled X-Men ’97 continue the previous series and is debuting in 2023.

They also mention that Moon Knight writer Beau DeMayo is the head writer along with the voice cast.

Head writer and executive producer on the series is Beau DeMayo. Supervising director is Jake Castorena and supervising producer is Charley Feldman. Consulting on the new series are X-Men: The Animated Series writers Eric and Julia Lewald, and director Larry Houston.

Returning cast members include: Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Alyson Court.

X-Men ‘97 is also welcoming a number of new voices to the cast, including Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, AJ LoCascio.

It was more a matter of time when the revival was announced.

‘Predator 5’ Officially Titled ‘Prey’ & Heading To Hulu In Summer 2022

Back in September, The Ronin confirmed that the next Predator film would be a co-production between 20th Century Studios and Hulu.

However, Predator 5 is a co-production between 20th Century Studios and Hulu, which means it could skip a traditional theatrical release to become a Hulu exclusive.

It’s now been confirmed that Predator 5, titled Prey, will become a Hulu exclusive as we mentioned and as trades predicted will be dropped sometime in the summer of 2022.

Deadline also now adds a synopsis:

Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, following Naru, a skilled female warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly evolved alien predator.

Three actors had been announced for the cast for the film, two of which The Ronin previously mentioned were involved with the new Predator film. They Include Amber Midthunder (Legion), Dakota Beavers, and Dane Diliergo.

Filming by director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) had shot the sci-fi prequel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada under the working title of Skulls, many got confused with the film’s final title, which is now Prey.

Henry Cavill Open To Playing Captain Britain For Marvel Studios

There is a huge uncertainly with actor Henry Cavill’s future in the DCEU as Superman, as while he’s still keen on the idea of returning for a Man of Steel sequel, the studio seems to be more concerned with multiple other Kryptonian cohorts.

During an extensive chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill was asked about who he might want to hypothetically play within the world of Marvel if he had the chance to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Brian Braddock aka Captain Britain seems to be of interest for him given he’s not often playing British characters.

“I’m never going to say a Marvel character that is already being played by someone else because everyone’s doing such an amazing job. However, I have the internet, and I have seen the various rumors about Captain Britain, and that would be loads of fun to do a cool, modernized version of that — like the way they modernized Captain America. There’s something fun about that, and I do love being British.”

As far as we know, there aren’t any official plans to use the Brit superhero anytime soon, however, he was briefly referenced as being part of SHIELD in the 1970s in Avengers: Endgame by Peggy Carter. It wouldn’t be terribly shocking if Braddock appeared in the upcoming Captain America 4 led by Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson as the new Captain America.

It wouldn’t be like Marvel hasn’t teased English superheroes before.

Kit Harington is playing Dane Whitman/Black Knight in the Eternals and there could be some linkage given the Arthurian connections. Joey Chapman aka Union Jack had an Easter Egg in Iron Man 2 as one of the racers competing against Tony Stark.

With the X-Men rights firmly at Marvel Studios, they could easily bring Braddock’s team Excalibur into the mix as well and allow for his MI6 Agent sister Betsy Braddock (becomes Psylcoke when her mind inhabits a Japanese woman, Kwannon) to join the MCU too.

‘John Wick 4: Hagakure’ Expected To Be The Next Film’s Title As Production Wraps

It looks like we might have a title for the latest John Wick installment.

Shamier Anderson, one of the film’s lead actors, has posted on Instagram that he’s wrapped filming (days after co-star Donnie Yen) and revealed one of his wrap gifts that seemingly has the film’s title attached to it. The title on the gift is John Wick 4: Haragkure, a potential nod to the Japanese book outlining the samurai mantra/code, the Yakuza are expected to be featured in the film with Hiroyuki Sanada possibly representing them for The High Table in the fourth installment.

Having a film’s title being revealed isn’t a new thing, Keanu Revees’ previous shoot for the next Matrix film had its title, The Matrix Resurrections, linked to wrap gifts.

Production had been taking place in Berlin and Paris.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ended with John Wick surviving the fall from the roof of The Continental hotel after Ian McShane’s Winston shot him. Winston’s motivations weren’t entirely clear as he didn’t seem shocked that Mr. Wick got away and could be giving The High Table a false sense of security. Wick eventually lands at the feet of Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King, who had his organization taken away from him by The High Table and convinces John to go to war with him against the mysterious group of criminal syndicate puppet masters.

The newest additions to the cast consist of Japanese action star Hiroyuki Sanada as Watanabe, Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen playing Wick’s old pal, British martial artist Scott Adkins (The Expendables 2, Doctor Strange), Marko Zaror (Machete Kills, Alita: Battle Angel), Atomic Blonde’s Bill Skarsgard, Anderson, and the film’s female lead played by Japanese-British singer Rina Sawayama.

Returning cast members will be Ian McShane as Winston, Lance Reddick as Charon and Laurence Fishburne back as the Bowery King.

John Wick 4 will hit the big screen on May 27, 2022, and Lionsgate had confirmed plans to make John Wick: Chapter 5, but will no longer shoot back-to-back with the next installment. Franchise creator and architect, Derek Kolstad, stated that he won’t be involved in the next two films and suggested John Wick 5 could be the final pic.

Grounded ‘Highlander’ Reboot Starring Henry Cavill To Begin Shooting In 2022

With John Wick 4 all wrapped up, director Chad Stahelski can now prep his long-gestating reboot of the Highlander franchise for Lionsgate. The project has been in the works for ages with multiple directors coming and going, however, a new update suggests that filming is finally happening sooner than expected.

In a new interview piece from The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill is indeed part of the cast netting $5million and the British actor calls the reboot “grounded-in-reality.” The original films eventually made the immortals aliens in the horribly panned sequel Highlander II: The Quickening and then backtracked from that rather quickly.

Next year he’ll shoot Highlander, a new version on the immortal swordsman action-fantasy (which sources say netted the actor at least a $5 million payday). Cavill says Stahelski’s vision is a more grounded-in-reality take than the original movies and show, and will likely play a bit more like a modern tragedy.

It’s still unclear what role Cavill is taking in the reboot and is currently shooting Matthew Vaughn’s ode to 80’s action movies with the spy flick Argylle.

HIGHLANDER – A Scottish clansman named Connor MacLeod discovers his true identity as a member of a legion of immortals. He then embarks on a legendary journey spanning continents and centuries, eventually landing in modern-day New York City. Connor faces his ultimate test when other immortals begin to appear in the city, leading to a titanic showdown where only one can claim victory.

Here is what Chad Stahelski had to say about the project back in the summer of 2020.

“As far as Highlander goes, it’s a project I’ve been working on for a little over three years now. It’s a project that’s not only near and dear to my heart but also the other creative people that are involved in it. It’s something that we feel we’ve got a good direction on. It’s just a tough nut to crack because the Highlander property is so involved and the mythology is so deep. But to try and make it our own, and be somewhat true to the original, yet do it in a way that makes it ours, is a little tricky. We don’t want to do a remake. We don’t want to do a reinvention. We want to do something that’s fresh, that utilizes the mythology of what everyone loves from the first movie. To make a good film is hard, to make a great film is even harder. We choose challenging projects in trying to be new and diverse — at least something that the audience hasn’t exactly seen our way yet. So, time is always a good thing, but I think I have a knack for picking projects that aren’t easy to develop. So, that’s good, I guess.

“It’s a cool story about… I call it the burden of immortality problem. You’ve got a group of individuals that, for some cosmic reason, have been allocated to be immortal. They have to live through human times and experience the human experience over centuries. The caveat to that being everyone you love or anyone whom you can bond with, you’re going to outlive. And the only people you can relate to, other immortals, the one simple truth is that there can be only one of you at the end. So, that means the only people you can relate to or actually become friends with want to take your head. So, how do you live through life with that kind of loneliness or that kind of burden upon you, knowing that you have to push love aside and you have to push friendship aside? And still learn every fighting style in the world because at the end of it, it’s one big gladiatorial pit over centuries, that there can be only one. And your mission in life is to survive, learn as much as you can and sword fight to the death. Come on. If you can’t get behind that, done to some really cool music, I don’t know what you’re doing.

Highlander is without a release date, but sometime in 2023 is looking like a good bet.

Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital Renamed WetaFX After Tech Assets Are Sold For $1.625 Billion To Unity

In a massive deal, Peter Jackson has sold the tech assets and name of his effects company Weta Digital to Unity Software for a hefty $1.625 billion. This deal doesn’t mean that Weta won’t have an effects division as Jackson’s company will stay separate from the deal and has been renamed/rebranded as WetaFX.

Unity’s acquired company, the tech assets of Weta, will be titled Weta Digital, while Peter Jackson’s Weta visual effects business will remain separate under the banner of WetaFX.

On the tech side, with this transaction Unity acquires Weta’s 275 engineers and proprietary technology including Weta’s cloud service and tools including Manuka and Gazebo renderers, Barbershop hair and fur system, Loki physics-based simulation tool for water and smoke; and facial capture technology.

Weta Digital, now called WetaFX, has been a pioneer of digital effects alongside fellow VFX house Industrial Light & Magic. They’re known for working on films such as The Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, multiple pics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and DCEU.

It’s nice to know that Weta’s effects division will continue under Jackson’s oversight and won’t stop doing visual effects for films/television, something that might have confused fans that maybe only read headlines about the deal.

Below is the original press release.

Unity (NYSE: U), the world’s leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D (RT3D) content, announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology, and engineering talent. Ultimately, this acquisition is designed to put Weta’s incredibly exclusive and sophisticated visual effects (VFX) tools into the hands of millions of creators and artists around the world, and once integrated onto the Unity platform, enable the next generation of RT3D creativity and shape the future of the metaverse.

Weta Digital will join Unity’s Create Solutions focused on the continual evolution of Weta Digital’s dozens of proprietary graphics and VFX tools, such as Manuka, Lumberjack, Loki, Squid, Barbershop, HighDef, CityBuilder, and many more. In the future, with Unity’s deep expertise in real-time, these world-class artist tools will be available to creators through an accessible cloud-based workflow.

Weta Digital’s Academy Award-Winning VFX teams will continue to exist as a standalone entity known as WetaFX and is expected to become Unity’s largest customer in the Media and Entertainment space. WetaFX will still be under majority ownership by Sir Peter Jackson and helmed by CEO Prem Akkaraju.

UPDATE: Old Guard Productions Confirmed As Unannounced Marvel Studios Project

Back in August, The Ronin first revealed two new LLC companies potentially being put together for upcoming Marvel Studios projects with Ionic Productions and Old Guard Productions, a month later we were able to confirm the former was indeed a Marvel project.

Well, today we can also confirm that Old Guard Productions is part of a wave of announced films/television shows coming to Marvel at some point. It’s unknown what the property will be and if it’ll be for the big or small screen.

If I had to guess, perhaps, it’s related to Jon Watt’s Fantastic Four reboot, X-Men, or maybe even something more obscure like the Marvel Comics version of Illuminati. I’m sure Winter Guard or Red Guardian projects could also make sense given David Harbour’s openness to reprising his Black Widow character.

Live-action projects on the horizon include Hawkeye, Spider-Man: No Way Home (collaboration with Sony Pictures), Ms. Marvel, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, Thor: Love & Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, The Marvels, Secret Invasion, Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, Ironheart, Echo, Armor Wars, Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3, Blade, Captain America 4, Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, X-Men, untitled series featuring Agatha Harkness, untitled Halloween Special, and an untitled Wakanda series from Ryan Coogler.

Here is a rundown of the recent wave of Marvel Studios LLC companies so far.

  • GRASS-FED PRODUCTIONS (SECRET INVASION)
  • BAD EGG PRODUCTIONS (IRONHEART)
  • FREQUENT PRODUCTIONS (EHCO)
  • MAGLEV TRAIN PRODUCTIONS (WAKANDA DISNEY+ SERIES)
  • NATURAL HISTORY PRODUCTIONS (DISNEY+ PROJECT)
  • BLUEBERRY WAFFLES PRODUCTIONS
  • STANDOFFISH PRODUCTIONS
  • CHANGEUP PRODUCTIONS
  • SOLVE EVERYTHING PRODUCTIONS
  • ON YOUR MARK PRODUCTIONS
  • CANTINA PRODUCTIONS
  • BATTLE ANYONE PRODUCTIONS
  • ACID POP PRODUCTIONS
  • SPEYSIDE PRODUCTIONS
  • RICHMOND STREET PRODUCTIONS
  • IONIC PRODUCTIONS
  • OLD GUARD PRODUCTIONS

Between Disney+ Day and D23 this month, there are some expectations of a new wave of announcements from Marvel’s Kevin Feige, which could mean we’ll have a better idea of what these mystery projects are. People I’m sure are hoping to hear announcements for things like Nova, Namor, Young Avengers, Shang-Chi 2, and much much more. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens this month.
