Daisy Ridley Reveals Rey’s Parentage Wasn’t Locked-Down Even During Filming – Confirms Obi-Wan Connection Was Discussed

With Star Wars in the rearview for actress Dasiy Ridley, she is dishing about behind the scenes development of the trilogy and her character Rey to Jimmy Kimmel Live guest host Josh Gad. Revealing that Rey’s parentage wasn’t always meant to be that of the grandchild of Emperor Palpatine (the daughter of his son/clone) and that she was indeed going to be connected to Obi-Wan Kenobi at some point.

RIDLEY: “No. At the beginning, there was toying with an Obi-Wan connection and there were like different versions. And then it went to she was no one and then it came to Episode 9 and J.J. pitched me the film and was like ‘Oh yeah, Palpatine is granddaddy’ and I’m like ‘awesome’. Two weeks later he was like ‘We’re not sure’, so it kept changing. Even when we were filming and I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be.”

Interestingly enough, before Star Wars: The Force Awakens began filming there was a rumbling that there was a female character being cast that was a relative of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and this persisted throughout the questioning of Rey’s family origin.

This example simply just points out how indecisive they were about most stuff with the films, which isn’t terribly shocking given that George Lucas did a lot of the same stuff on the original trilogy. However, it would also likely add to the narrative that everyone was scrambling to make a competing version of Episode 9 after Colin Trevorrow’s Star Wars: Duel of The Fates after he exited the film.

Where the films are going is a little unclear despite multiple teases from Kathleen Kennedy that the exploration of Star Wars’ past ala The Old Republic is an option they’ve considered.

Mature Animated Series ‘The Venture Bros.’ Cancelled By Cartoon Network?

This isn’t exactly official, but someone from The Venture Bros. family has seemingly revealed on Twitter that the brilliant mature animated series may have been cancelled by Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim.

UPDATE: Show creator Jackson Publick has now made the cancellation official after making the following statement on Twitter. The show has now ended after 17 years.

Author Ken Plume quote tweeted a question about shows that were cancelled too soon and he stated “The Venture Bros.”, an official statement about the show ending hasn’t been made by the network at this point.

When pushed to explain the tweet he responded with “I have no further comment”.

Ken is the author of Go Team Venture!: The Art & Making of The Venture Bros. and seemingly has a relationship with the show’s creators. While this is only a rumor, Adult Swim hasn’t officially talked about moving forward with a Season 8 and the last episodes aired back in 2018.

The comedic animated series has had a pretty large cult following after seven seasons that aired between 2004-2018 and is one of the longest-running shows on Adult Swim. I’m a huge fan of the show as it does some amazing parodies of classic Marvel Comics characters putting their own spin on them and other excellent pop culture references.

Venture Bros. has some of the best and elaborate design work of any cartoon series it would be a shame that if ends. I think if Cartoon Network has indeed decided against a Season 8 it might be a good idea for HBO Max to pick it up after the raunchy Harley Quinn series moved to the service from it’s original home at DC Universe. HBO Max taking over some stuff from Adult Swim wouldn’t be hard to imagine as it would build-up their animation portfolio.

The Venture Bros. chronicles the lives and adventures of the Venture family: well-meaning but incompetent teenagers Hank and Dean Venture; their loving but emotionally insecure, unethical, and underachieving super-scientist father Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture; the family’s bodyguard, secret agent Brock Samson, or his temporary replacement, the reformed villain and pederast Sergeant Hatred; and the family’s self-proclaimed archnemesis, The Monarch, a butterfly-themed supervillain. Initially conceived as a satire of boy adventurer and Space Age fiction prevalent in the early 1960s, it is considered to be an action/adventure series with comedy-drama elements.

Hugo Weaving Has Zero Interest In Joining Amazon’s ‘Lord of The Rings’ Series

It was recently revealed by Aussie actor Hugo Weaving that he was keen on returning to the Agent Smith role for Lana Wachowski’s Matrix 4, but the director ultimately decided against it.

However, when it comes to being asked to reprise the role of Elrond in future Middle-Earth projects such as Amazon’s Lord of The Rings series set in during the Second Age, he has no interest according to comments made to Variety.

WEAVING: “Matrix might have happened. But Lord of the Rings, no, I would never — I’m not interested in that at all. Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it.”

“They have to be something really interesting, with a different twist to make me really keen to do it.”

“I’m not saying ‘no’ [to those kinds of tentpole films] because I’m sort of open to anything,” he says. “But I suppose my interests have always lay with this country and trying to find really interesting projects out here. That’s my primary focus.”

His experience working on the Hobbit films and their outcome might have something to do with his stance.

There had been some unconfirmed fan rumblings of his character returning for the Amazon series, but Hugo won’t be involved.

Alan Ritchson To Lead Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Series

Yesterday, it was announced by Amazon via Deadline that they’ve officially cast Alan Ritchson (Titans, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as the new Jack Reacher for their Prime Video series, which will be a reboot of the Lee Childs hard-boiled character. Reacher is known to be a hulking figure at 6’5 (Ritchson is 6’4), so the casting seems to be great on paper, we’ll have to see if Amazon will have another Jack Ryan level hit on their hands.

Its first season is said to be based on the novel The Killing Floor and will take place in Georgia.

Jack Reacher comes to the little town of Margrave looking for information about the mysterious death of a guitar player named Blind Blake. Instead, he finds one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history.

The character had been previously played by action star Tom Cruise in Christopher McQuarrie’s Jack Reacher and the box office blunder Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. A casting choice that seemed to irk author Lee Childs in retrospect.

I’m sure folks are going to be curious if a Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher crossover event could be in the cards given they’re both Paramount/Skydance characters with their own Amazon shows.

Amazon has a bevy of shows based on novels on the way including Lord of The Rings and The Wheel of Time about to resume production after production pauses. They also announced plans in 2018 to make a series reboot of Robert E. Howard’s Conan The Barbarian, the film incarnation starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and is credited to launching his successful Hollywood career.

Hugo Weaving Says Lana Wachowski Pulled The Plug On His Return For ‘Matrix 4’

A while back, Hugo Weaving had cited scheduling issues as the reason he ultimately wouldn’t be returning for the fourth Matrix film after there had been interest from director Lana Wachowski for the actor to reprise the role of Agent Smith.

However, Weaving has now given a more detailed explanation of what happened behind the scenes during a recent interview with Coming Soon. This new version suggests that his reaction to the script may have led to Lana having second thoughts about having Hugo return as during the negotiation stage she decided against it.

WEAVING: “Lana Wachowski had rung me at the beginning of last year. We’ve worked together five times, the Wachowski’s and I on three Matrix films, V for Vendetta and Cloud Atlas. I’ve hung out with them all over the world for many, many years. So, yes, Lana was very keen for me to be involved in The Matrix. There was a reading with Keanu, Carrie, and myself and a few others from the old family.”

“I loved a lot of it and wasn’t sure about other bits. Ultimately, we talked about it and when the offer came through to do it for Warner’s I said yes the next day and I talked to Lana.”

“I thought we could have done my scenes in May, June, and July; and we talked about money and we talked about — they were negotiating,” Weaving added. “And we were all pretty much sorted and agreed on dates and it was all fine, but then Lana decided she didn’t think it was going to work. So, she pulled the plug on the negotiations. That’s where it ended up. She basically didn’t feel that my commitment to the National Theatre was going to fit in with the dates that she had in mind for me.”

“It was a shame in one way that I couldn’t be with them all in Berlin, but that was her call. So, that was it really. I know they then started shooting in San Francisco and they were going to shoot in Chicago and they ended up starting in Berlin but it was shut down. But they restarted again. I don’t know how they’re going, but, yeah, it would be lovely to be over there to hang out with them all. I’m very fond of Keanu and Carrie. I haven’t seen them for a while. But I look forward to seeing it.”

Sometimes directors have second guesses when it comes to the creative/casting stage and if things just don’t feel like a good fit during the meeting process it might not pan-out. This isn’t the first time an actor thought they were returning for a sequel and it didn’t come together.

Laurence Fishburne is also not expected to reprise the Morpheus role either.

As Weaving points out he has an excellent relationship with Lana and I’m sure they’ll find something to work on in the future.

Filming is currently underway at Babelsberg Studio just outside of Berlin, Germany.

The cast of Matrix 4 includes returning actors such as Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe. New additions include Jessica Henwick (Godzilla vs Kong, Iron Fist, Star Wars: The Force Awakens) playing a new version of Neo/The One, Neil Patrick Harris (Starship Troopers, Gone Girl), Toby Onwumere, Erendira Ibarra (Sense8), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen, Aquaman).

There is an expectation if successful the studio will move forward with two sequels to complete a new trilogy.

John Wick directors Chad Stahleski and David Leitch returned to help with action sequences on the film that would be shot by Lana herself, normally handled by a stunt coorindator/2nd unit director given the danger involved with capturing action shots.

Warner Bros. has given the sequel/soft-reboot a release date of April 1st, 2022.

‘The Batman’ Screenwriter Mattson Tomlin To Direct Android Uprising Flick ‘Mother/ Android’ Starring Chloe Grace Moretz – Matt Reeves To Produce

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will be making his feature film directorial debut with an original science fiction thriller titled Mother/ Android for Miramax that has Chloe Grace Mortez attached to star as lead character Georgia.

Tomlin also penned the film.

Chloe Grace Moretz is set to star in the Miramax project as Georgia who, with her boyfriend Sam, goes on a treacherous journey to escape their country, which is caught in an unexpected war with artificial intelligence. Days away from the arrival of their first child, the couple must face No Man’s Land— a stronghold of the android uprising, in hopes of reaching safety before giving birth.

Matt Reeves, who directed Chloe in the horror remake Let Me In and co-wrote The Batman with Tomlin will be producing the project via his production company 6th & Idaho.

Tomlin was behind the recent Netflix film Project Power and is also currently working on a Mega Man film.

The young actress had been previously rumored for the lead role in Len Wiseman’s John Wick spinoff Ballerina but has yet to be confirmed.

Guy Ritchie Returns To Spy Genre With MI6 Thriller ‘Five Eyes’ Starring Jason Statham – Begins Shooting Next Month

Fresh news coming out of the virtual Toronto Film Festival market as Miramax and STXfilms has landed the next film director Guy Ritchie (Aladdin, The Gentlemen) as they aim to begin shooting next month in Europe.

Guy will return to the spy genre after making The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with a new thriller titled Five Eyes, that will star Jason Statham as MI6 Agent Orson Fortune.

Below is a synopsis of the film that was penned by The Gentlemen screenwriters Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies with some rewrites from Guy.

MI6 guns-and-steel agent Orson Fortune (Statham) is recruited by global intelligence alliance Five Eyes to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Reluctantly paired with a CIA high-tech expert, Fortune sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use all of his charm, ingenuity, and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker.

There should be some casting news in the coming weeks.

Ritchie and Statham recently had a reunion on the thriller Cash Truck for Miramax, an English remake of the French heist film Le Convouyer that was shot in London and Los Angeles. The pair had previously worked together on Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and the misstep Revolver. The latter was the last time the two had done a film together before coming together for Cash Truck.

The Gentlemen was Ritchie’s grand return to more mature filmmaking after making movies like Sherlock Holmes and Disney’s Aladdin, which was a good effort but a far cry from his best work like Snatch. I’m looking forward to seeing how Cash Truck (possibly retitled for release) pans-out and if he’ll attempt to focus on more action-driven films moving forward.

Lord and Miller Producing Live-Action ‘Spider-Man’ Spin-Off Series ‘Silk’ For Sony – Amazon In Talks To Acquire It

Breaking news!

Variety reports that Phil Lord and Chris Miller are set to executive produce alongside Amy Pascal on a live-action series based on the Marvel Comics character Cindy Moon aka Silk, a character that is expected to be explored in future Spider-Verse films.

Adding that Lauren Moon may end up writing Silk and Amazon is in talks with Sony to acquire the Marvel series.

Cindy is a Korean-American superhero and would be a huge boost to the growing amount of diverse superheroes coming from the pages of Marvel Comics including Gemma Chan’s Sersi in Eternals and Simu Liu playing the martial arts spy Shang-Chi.

Having Lord and Miller involved could suggest they might eventually direct something live-action down the road.

Silk would be the first live-action Marvel series for Sony featuring characters from their Spider-Man rights roster. A feature film had once been reported but that seemingly hasn’t gone further than the early development stage if they’ve pivoted to a series instead.

Robert Pattinson Reportedly Tests Positive For COVID-19 Halting Production On ‘The Batman’

Deadline recently confirmed a Daily Mail story that a crew member working on The Batman has tested positive placing the production on hiatus again.

Even more shocking is that Vanity Fair reports the person who tested positive is actually their lead star Robert Pattinson, who is playing Bruce Wayne aka Batman in the reboot.

Robert Pattinson has tested positive for the coronavirus, causing filming of The Batman to be halted just days after the superhero drama resumed work at studios outside of London.

This certainly puts into question the prevention tools the film industry has put so much faith in during the return to productions in the United Kingdom. I’m starting to think that if Pattinson can’t be protected others are just as open to infection, if not more.

Hopefully, Robert and others on the film remain in good health and spirits.

This news comes a day after action star Dwayne Johnson revealed himself and his family, including his two young daughters had tested positive for COVID-19 as well. Johnson revealed this on Instagram while reiterating how important wearing a mask is.

The Batman had previously stopped production back in March alongside a bulk of projects filming in England and had only recently started filming again.

Warner Bros. is coming off massive buzz for film after the release of the teaser trailer that spread like wildfire online.
