Peter Jackson’s Weta Digital Renamed WetaFX After Tech Assets Are Sold For $1.625 Billion To Unity

In a massive deal, Peter Jackson has sold the tech assets and name of his effects company Weta Digital to Unity Software for a hefty $1.625 billion. This deal doesn’t mean that Weta won’t have an effects division as Jackson’s company will stay separate from the deal and has been renamed/rebranded as WetaFX.

Unity’s acquired company, the tech assets of Weta, will be titled Weta Digital, while Peter Jackson’s Weta visual effects business will remain separate under the banner of WetaFX.

On the tech side, with this transaction Unity acquires Weta’s 275 engineers and proprietary technology including Weta’s cloud service and tools including Manuka and Gazebo renderers, Barbershop hair and fur system, Loki physics-based simulation tool for water and smoke; and facial capture technology.

Weta Digital, now called WetaFX, has been a pioneer of digital effects alongside fellow VFX house Industrial Light & Magic. They’re known for working on films such as The Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit, King Kong, multiple pics in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and DCEU.

It’s nice to know that Weta’s effects division will continue under Jackson’s oversight and won’t stop doing visual effects for films/television, something that might have confused fans that maybe only read headlines about the deal.

Below is the original press release.

Unity (NYSE: U), the world’s leading platform for creating and operating interactive, real-time 3D (RT3D) content, announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Weta Digital’s tools, pipeline, technology, and engineering talent. Ultimately, this acquisition is designed to put Weta’s incredibly exclusive and sophisticated visual effects (VFX) tools into the hands of millions of creators and artists around the world, and once integrated onto the Unity platform, enable the next generation of RT3D creativity and shape the future of the metaverse.

Weta Digital will join Unity’s Create Solutions focused on the continual evolution of Weta Digital’s dozens of proprietary graphics and VFX tools, such as Manuka, Lumberjack, Loki, Squid, Barbershop, HighDef, CityBuilder, and many more. In the future, with Unity’s deep expertise in real-time, these world-class artist tools will be available to creators through an accessible cloud-based workflow.

Weta Digital’s Academy Award-Winning VFX teams will continue to exist as a standalone entity known as WetaFX and is expected to become Unity’s largest customer in the Media and Entertainment space. WetaFX will still be under majority ownership by Sir Peter Jackson and helmed by CEO Prem Akkaraju.

‘Planet Of The Apes 4’: Weta Digital Returning With ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ VFX Supervisor Tapped

It was heartbreaking to see Wes Ball’s (Maze Runner Trilogy) big special effects event film Mouse Guard getting scrapped as part of the wave of films that got cancelled in the wake of Disney’s merger with 21st Century Fox and taking oversight on feature films in development at 20th Century Fox (now 20th Century Studios).

Ball would instead be announced as the director and co-writer on a fourth installment in the modern Planet of The Apes franchise, the filmmaker assuring fans the project wouldn’t be a reboot but taking place in the same universe as the last three movies. The director co-writing the new film with Josh Friedman, who has worked on Steven Spielberg’s War of The Worlds, Brian De Palma’s The Black Dahlia, Terminator: Dark Fate, the Snowpiercer series, and Apple’s Foundation.

It looks like the next film should have the same level of impressive visual effects as previous installments.

The Ronin has learned that Weta Digital’s Phillip Leonhardt will be the visual effects supervisor on the untitled film having previously worked on Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel and Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Leonhardt is no stranger to the franchise with involvement on Matt Reeves’ War For The Planet of The Apes.

Weta Digital was working closely with Ball on Mouse Guard and Andy Serkis was going to have a role on that film, we would not be shocked if Serkis returned for Planet of The Apes 4. However, Serkis playing new chimpanzee role within the franchise could mimic how Roddy McDowall played both Cornelius and Caesar in the original string of films.

Folks unfamiliar with the original Planet of The Apes movies might be unaware that the modern trilogy really only covered pics such as Conquest of The Planet of The Apes and Battle For The Planet of The Apes, stories that don’t take place in the original timeline of the first two movies which is nearly 2,000 years in the future from the settings we’ve recently seen.

If I’m 20th Century Studios and Wes Ball, I would be ready at this point to make the true time jump to the point were the apes are running their own evolved society (less primitive and speaking) and potentially seeing a group of astronauts crash land on this planet having to navigate a setting where humans are no longer the dominate species. Beneath The Planet of The Apes revealed a secret group of mutated humans have gained the ability of telepathy (something that nobody has tackled since that installment), which could be an interesting spin as it’s not just a straight rehash of the original 1968 film and Tim Burton’s misguided reboot from 2001 starring Mark Wahlberg with fantastic makeup from Rick Baker.

Speaking of Wahlberg, we have our fingers crossed that Wes Ball hires someone with a little more age/skill to play a lead human role such as Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) for potential roles of Colonel George Taylor or John Brent.

It was revealed he would be reuniting with production designer Daniel Dorrance ((A Good Day To Die Hard, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, The Expendables 3) on Planet of The Apes 4.

We have to assume that Ball will also bring on Maze Runner: The Death Cure cinematographer Gyula Pados (Predators, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, Jumanji: The Next Level), who has been working on David F. Sandberg’s DC Comics sequel Shazam! Fury of The Gods in Atlanta. Pados having extensive experience with exterior shoots would certainly make his addition to the project an asset.

How far along Planet of The Apes 4 is at the moment is unknown and when they hope to begin shooting.

David Lowery & A24 Should Consider Developing A Mature Fantasy Franchise After ‘The Green Knight’

A24 will be releasing the visually stunning fantasy film The Green Knight from filmmaker David Lowery that is loosely based on the Arthurian poem Sir Gawain & The Green Knight. Dev Patel’s Sir Gawain is a member of King Arthur’s Knights of The Round Table, being part of the public domain allows the studio not to worry about rights issues and gives them creative freedom to tinker with the mythology.

THE GREEN KNIGHT – An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

The film releases in July 30 and has some extremely impressive visual effects shots from the wonderful Weta Digital, the high-profile effects house has some experience world-building with Peter Jackson’s Lord of The Rings and Hobbit trilogies.

I believe that A24 and David Lowery have an opportunity here to do something special with The Green Knight by slowly developing their own fantasy franchise with reasonably budgeted standalone R-rated films tackling various points of ancient myths. It’s also fiscally responsible to spend money on one movie at a time instead of pouring in a huge amount of money on a trilogy upfront. There are plenty of other characters worth exploring in solo films such as Merlin and Sir Lancelot among other stories linked to the Arthurian legends alone.

With the popularity of Game of Thrones, it was apparent that adult audiences are very much interested in fantasy genre material and hopefully The Green Knight can scratch that itch for the time being. I think the studio would be smart to at least consider having Lowery produce or direct some follow-ups of The Green Knight before branching off to other legends.

Once they’ve explored enough Arthurian tales they could move on to other myths such as Beowulf, Greek epic The Odyssey, the adventures of demigods like Perseus or Hercules, and Sigurd & The Dragon alongside the other tales in the massive world of Norse mythology. Unlike other studios perusing public domain material, they could assemble a great group of filmmakers to really bring life to these ancient stories by putting some real effort into developing them as real feature films, not sequel bait.

Lowery is currently busy shooting the Disney movie Peter Pan & Wendy in Vancouver.

Amazon’s ‘Lord of The Rings’ Series May Deviate Visually From The Middle-Earth Established By Peter Jackson

Filming on Amazon’s new Lord of The Rings series finally kicked-off on Monday according to a report from Deadline and while most Tolkien fans like myself are eager to see what they’re cooking up it is starting to sound like the new series might not look as familiar as we had hoped.

There are some signs that Amazon could be going a slightly different route with how they want to tackle their version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth for the series and might deviate from the Peter Jackson trilogies.

One of the main issues for me is that while they’re filming in Auckland, New Zealand there haven’t been any grand announcements that either Weta Digitial or Weta Workshop would be returning to work on the series. This doesn’t mean they 100% aren’t helping out but you’d think they would want to make everyone aware of their involvement if they were and the longer they do not mention them the more likely they just aren’t working on it.

It’s worth noting that Stone Street Studios in Wellington has been busy with the Avatar sequels and could be a reason why they opted to shoot in Auckland instead.

However, Jason Smith is listed as the visual effects supervisor on a couple of episodes which is a little odd given that Smith came from ILM and could be another sign that Weta Digital is sitting this one out.

Smith previously working on Bumblebee, Transformers: The Last Knight, and Warcraft. The latter did have work from Weta Workshop so there is a glimmer of hope they have the sense to at least have them come back even if Weta Digital isn’t.

If they ultimately change from Weta Digital to ILM there is going to be a difference stylistically between the two groups of artists given you’ll likely have different people calling the creative shots as well that may want to do something new for Amazon.

However, another division at Amazon might give us some clues.

Here is a job description from Amazon Games Studios, specifically, for their upcoming Middle-Earth/Lord of The Rings game. The language here would outline that a Character Concept Artist would be aiming to create a “fresh” take on the world from the previous games and movies. We’ve been mostly in the dark about how Amazon ultimately plans to connect to the Peter Jackson films, if at all.

This position will work with the Art Director and the rest of the Concept team to build a visual library of the characters and creatures that inhabit Middle-Earth.

We’re seeking an art style for our game that is “different at a glance” from the games and movies that have come before us. We need an artist with bravery and artistic skills to help us do something new.

In this role you will have the huge responsibility of bringing a fresh interpretation to Tolkien’s work. You work will bridge between the vision of the Art Director and the implementation team of character artists, tech artists and animators.

If they are planning on a new look for the game, why wouldn’t they do the same for the series?

I’ve also heard some rumblings behind the scenes that they are indeed changing certain looks from how they were done in the Jackson films for the new series. We’ll have to see set photos, stills, concept artwork, or the final version of the series to make any real judgments on how different they have gone.

Taking place during The Second Age does give them some wiggle-room concerning trying new things, but there are also locations, characters, and creatures from Peter’s films that are expected to inhabit this era as well. The Dark Lord Sauron is a looming force during the entire Second Age and there are plenty of elves from the original films that are alive during this time too.

It remains to be seen if any of the original actors will be involved.

Despite unconfirmed rumors that his character Elrond would be in the upcoming series, film franchise actor Hugo Weaving recently stated to Variety he had zero intention of reprising the role again.

WEAVING: “Matrix might have happened. But Lord of the Rings, no, I would never — I’m not interested in that at all. Look, I loved being in New Zealand with all those great people, and it was like going back to a family but actually, to be honest, I think everyone had more than enough of it.”

“They have to be something really interesting, with a different twist to make me really keen to do it.”

“I’m not saying ‘no’ [to those kinds of tentpole films] because I’m sort of open to anything,” he says. “But I suppose my interests have always lay with this country and trying to find really interesting projects out here. That’s my primary focus.”

Amazon wanting to do their own thing would be certainly commendable from a creative standpoint but that seems like a huge risk given how large the Tolkien fandom has become and their expectations that the series will look like the live-action incarnations they have become familiar with.

We’ll have to wait and see if set photos reveal a drastic change between the Jackson trilogies and this new series.

Peter Jackson’s New Zealand-Based Weta Digital Launches Weta Animated

Today, it was officially announced via Variety that Weta Digital will be expanding it’s operations with a new animation division called Weta Animated. Peter Jackson’s company based in New Zealand has been one of the leading forces in digital visual effects along industry peers such as Industrial Light & Magic.

They’ve hired Prem Akkaraju to lead Weta Animated as the company’s chief executive officer.

Weta Digital got it’s start with Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures. They’ve been working on various films since which includes projects such as The Lord of The Rings trilogy, King Kong, The Hobbit trilogy, Avatar, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Alita: Battle Angel, District 9, Mulan, and Black Widow.

It’s also been revealed that owners Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will write, produce, and direct many animated projects for newly formed company. However, details weren’t mentioned on what those projects could be.

I’m curious if they’ll attempt to use Weta Animated to make the Tintin sequels.
