‘Mission: Impossible’ Sequels Add Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Rob Delaney & Others To Cast – New Images Revealed

Writer/director Christopher McQuarrie has announced via Instagram another wave of actors joining the cast of Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8. Those additions including Cary Elwes, Indira Varma (Game of Thrones, Obi-Wan Kenobi), Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2), Charles Parnell (The Last Ship), and British character actor Mark Gatiss (Sherlock).

McQuarrie posted a batch of images of the actors in what looks to be a scene from Mission: Impossible 7, I have to assume it’s some briefing scene (possibly presidential?).

The rest of the cast led by Tom Cruise includes Esai Morales, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and Henry Czerny.

Mission: Impossible 8 was originally planned to shoot back-to-back with Mission: Impossible 7, but due to Tom Cruise’s promotional schedule for Top Gun: Maverick later this year means they’ll have to pause production between installments. It’s not the worse idea imaginable as the cast and crew has either been shooting or waiting to shoot for an entire year, as the blockbuster was one of the first films to halt production due to the pandemic.

An audio clip of Tom Cruise chewing-out crew members not adhering to COVID-19 protocols went viral late last year and a break might have a positive impact on everyone’s morale.

Mission: Impossible 7 is slated for November 19th, 2021 and Mission: Impossible 8 is set for November 4th, 2022.

‘Mission: Impossible 7’ & ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Won’t Be Filming Back-To-Back As Schedule Will Conflict With ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Promotion

While the original plan was to shoot the next two Mission: Impossible films back-to-back under the working title Libra, that seems to be on hold according to a report from Deadline. As the outlet states Paramount Pictures is going to need Tom Cruise to help promote Top Gun: Maverick for it’s July 2nd release, assuming the film doesn’t get pushed to the fall or winter, which means that filming will need to be placed on pause for a bit.

Sources said this is simply down to the shifting release calendar. Star Tom Cruise will now be needed on promotional duties by the studio for Top Gun: Maverick ahead of that film’s planned release on July 2, and will be out of action for a period. 

This comes as Mission: Impossible 7 is heading back to London for some “finishing touches” according to writer/director Christopher McQuarrie on Instagram.

MCQUARRIE: “Now back to London for a few finishing touches. All aboard for our greatest challenge yet…”

Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.2 actress Pom Klementieff, who has a role in the films recently flew to Sydney, Australia to get ready to for the shoot of Marvel’s Thor: Love & Thunder. We have to assume this signaled that she had completed the filming for the first installment.

The rest of the cast includes Esai Morales, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Shea Whigham, and Henry Czerny.

Filming on the 7th installment hasn’t been all rainbows and sunshine, there had paused back in March of 2020 due to the pandemic that led to production hiccups and a viral audio clip of Tom Cruise chewing out crew members for not adhering to the strict on-set COVID-19 protocols. It’s possible that everyone just needs a break after spending over a year on this film.

Mission: Impossible 7 is slated for November 19th, 2021 and Mission: Impossible 8 is set for November 4th, 2022.

Doug Liman Gives Updates On ‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’ & His Untitled Space Movie Starring Tom Cruise

We’ve been patiently waiting on news about the sequel to the sci-fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow that stared Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.

While promoting his new film Lockdown, shot during the pandemic, director Doug Liman explained that without the the pair of actors officially signing on the film can’t move forward.

LIMAN: “I’ve always been interested in the idea of a sequel being more character-driven than the first film, because that’s not how things are normally done. That’s been my approach when developing the sequel and because Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt are such phenomenal actors. I get sometimes the sequel just has to have more firepower or more explosions but no visual effect is going to top what you’re going to get from a great scene performed by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.”

“It’s one of these things where if Tom, Emily and I were to say, ‘we’re ready to pull the trigger on this script,’ it’s Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, the film gets made. That’s pretty much how Hollywood works. The stars are the gatekeepers. If you can get Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt to commit to the movie, it’s going to happen.“

Emily Blunt has previously said she’s game but it all comes down to scheduling, the actors have to agree to a script and the production stated before anything seems to be going forward.

The filmmaker also talked to Collider about where they are concerning the untitled movie that will star Tom Cruise and will shoot sequences in space thanks to SpaceX.

LIMAN: “From the first conversations that we’ve had about the film… how you insure it has been a central part of the conversations. So, we wouldn’t be talking about this movie if we hadn’t figured out a way to navigate the insurance component. So we have navigated it, but there would not have been a conversation about this movie without figuring out the insurance… it’s the same thing in Locked Down, one of the first conversations was about insurance, because of the pandemic… You can’t make a movie without having an insurance conversation. And [whether] you’re talking about going to outer space, [or] you’re talking about shooting in London in the heart of the pandemic, you know, insurance is gonna dictate whether that actually is possible.”

“I’m not sure any of us really know what 2021 is gonna look like yet, because of the pandemic. I have something I’m working on that I’m hoping I can shoot. But I don’t think anyone can know 100% right now.”

Things are even more certain during the pandemic but I’m sure studios will eventually want to secure Tom Cruise’s schedule before other things come up.

EXCLUSIVE: Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Series Hires ‘Bodyguard’ Director Thomas Vincent

The Ronin has been able to confirm that Skydance/Amazon has hired French director Thomas Vincent to helm an undisclosed amount of episodes for their new Jack Reacher series starring Alan Ritchson (Titans, Ghosts of War). The Amazon series is a hard reboot of the character previously played by Tom Cruise in two feature films released by Paramount Pictures and based on the novels written by author Lee Child.

The first season is said to be an adaption of the novel The Killing Floor.

Jack Reacher comes to the little town of Margrave looking for information about the mysterious death of a guitar player named Blind Blake. Instead, he finds one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history.

Vincent is likely best known for directing the first three episodes of the hit Netflix series Bodyguard that was led by Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Eternals).

BODYGUARD – Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of David Budd (Richard Madden), a heroic, but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?

We previously reported that filming is expected to kick-off around mid-April in Toronto.

They’ve also hired production designer Patricio M. Farrell, who worked on The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Skydance is also behind Amazon’s Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski and developing an original spy series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger for Netflix.

‘Edge of Tomorrow 2’: Emily Blunt Calls Script “Really Promising” and Reiterates That Schedules Need To Align

Warner Bros. and director Doug Liman have been trying to put together a sequel to the Tom Cruise sci-fi action film Edge of Tomorrow that co-starred Emily Blunt. The original film focuses on cowardly military officer that focuses mainly on PR for the war between an invading force of aliens. His big mouth leads to him being stripped of his rank and thrown into the meat-grinder with the rest of the grunts leading to his death, however, he is covered in alien blood that allows him to relive the same day over and over (similar to Groundhog Dog). Until he runs into another soldier that previously had the same ability and they work together to finally put a stop to the alien horde that leads to her training him into a soldier tough enough to survive the battlefield and stop the aliens from conquering Earth.

A script for Edge of Tomorrow has been kicking around for a while now but the busy schedules of both Tom and Emily has been a huge issue. While recently speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Blunt revealed that the script is “really promising” but the as previously pointed out multiple times that scheduling has been a huge headache to getting production started on the sequel.

BLUNT: “Yes, [the script] is really promising and really, really cool. I just don’t know when everything’s going to sort of align, you know what I mean? Between all of our schedules, it would just have to be the right time. But there is something in the works, for sure, that’s a great idea. A great idea.”

Tom Cruise is really busy completing Mission: Impossible 7, Mission: Impossible 8, and a new film with Doug Liman that will be shot in space for Universal Pictures budgeted at over $200 million. Liman had also been preoccupied with finishing the Lionsgate sci-fi film Chaos Walking starring Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley.

EDGE OF TOMORROW – When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight — and his death — over and over again. However, Cage’s fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.

Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Series Reboot Shooting In Toronto From April To July – Stars Alan Ritchson

The Ronin has been able to independently confirm that Skydance and Amazon’s upcoming Jack Reacher series reboot starring Alan Ritchson will be shooting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Filming is on the streaming series is expected to take place next year from April 15th to July 30th.

Alan Ritchson isn’t a stranger to shooting projects in Canada as he shot DC Universe’s Titans in Toronto as well.

The first season is reportedly taking cues from the novel The Killing Floor written by Lee Child and takes place in Georgia.

Tom Cruise previously played the titular role in the Paramount feature films Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. A casting choice that author Lee Child was never happy with given the character is a tall and hulking figure in the books.

Since that Jack Reacher isn’t likely going to wrap until the summer (barring production delays) I wouldn’t assume that it would be ready to be released before the fall of 2021 or early 2022.

Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell Spotted Filming ‘Mission: Impossible 7’ Action Scene In Rome, Italy

After spending some time filming scenes in Norway, the production of Mission: Impossible 7 has moved to Rome, Italy as The Associated Press has posted some set footage of actors Tom Cruise and Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter, Captain America: The First Avenger) filming an action scene that features a police car.

They had been planning on filming in Venice before a COVID-19 outbreak in the city led to a production halt.

Hayley Atwell has been teasing stunt driving and weapons training for the film on her Instagram account.

Christopher McQuarrie has returned to write and direct the next two installments which would be using the working title Libra as primary filming was taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in Watford, England.

There was a recent casting shake-up as character actor Esai Morales (Ozark, Titans) has replaced Nicholas Hoult as the film’s villain after Hoult had to bow-out over a scheduling conflict. The rest of the cast includes Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, and the original film’s cast member Henry Czerny. 

The studio had recently bumped the release dates for the pair of action sequels due to the production delays, those new spots in the release calendar are November 19th, 2021, and November 4th, 2022.

Tom Cruise/Doug Liman Movie Filming In Space May Land At Universal – Could Cost $200M+ To Make

Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures is currently in negotiations to distribute the untitled science fiction action film from director Doug Liman (American Made, Edge of Tomorrow) and starring Tom Cruise, the eye-grabbing gimmick of the film is that it will be shot in space something that really hasn’t been done with a studio blockbuster.

They mention that the budget could be over $200 million which is expected given that the costs involved with shooting in space, something that really hasn’t been undertaken when it comes to a narrative studio feature film. Cruise himself could end up earning something in the range of $30-60 million.

Details about the movie are scarce but it’s a given that it will be in the science fiction genre and we likely won’t get an official synopsis until an official deal is done.

Tom and Doug had also been trying to made a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem that will be happening anytime soon despite Liman’s optimistic statements made last year. Cruise is expected to resume filming on Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 for Paramount Pictures soon in the United Kingdom.

When they plan on shooting the untitled project is currently a mystery.

Guillermo del Toro Still Hopeful About Making His ‘At The Mountains of Madness’ Feature Film Adaptation

There are plenty of movies that never came together for director Guillermo del Toro such as a remake of The Fantastic Voyage and DC Comics film Justice League Dark (now being developed as a series for HBO Max by J.J. Abrams/Bad Robot). 

One of the bigger projects he was forced to walk away from was a high-budget R-rated version of H.P Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness that had Tom Cruise set to star with James Cameron producing. The film ultimately didn’t come together over budget concerns. 

While speaking with Indie Wire he spoke about still being hopeful about making the film and wears a memento ring to remind him about it. 

DEL TORO: “This is why I wear this ring since the project got canceled. This is the fake ring about a fake university, the one that appears in the book, Miskatonic University, and I’m gonna wear it until I make the movie. They may bury me with it.”

 “It’s difficult to tackle. We had James Cameron as a co-producer with me …. we had Tom Cruise [starring] and we thought we were gonna get it made and we didn’t, it didn’t happen. These are not decisions you make. Most of us filmmakers, we exist in a world that moves above our paygrade. People think that our career is a series of decisions. Our career is a series of accidents happening with your decisions on top. You don’t decide to do one movie instead of another.”

The classic story has had a large influence on the horror film genre including John Carpenter’s films such as The Thing and In The Mouth of Madness along with more modern stuff like Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus.

Christopher McQuarrie Planning Future R-Rated Film With Tom Cruise

While the Mission: Impossible sequels are going to eventually resume filming in the United Kingdom, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie spoke with Empire Magazine revealing that he was considering pushing the Jack Reacher into the realm of R-rated franchises if it was allowed to continue. 

MCQUARRIE: “Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.”

However, the Reacher franchise ended after Jack Reacher: Never Go Back flopped at the box office and instead is getting rebooted as a television series for Amazon Prime Video. The pair are seemingly still planning another R-rated project in the future, but Christopher is keeping mum concerning details while teasing it. 

MCQUARRIE: “It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future. […] The franchise has moved on, and we haven’t. So we’ve now got stuff in the hopper. The [Jack Reacher] stuff we’re talking about now is tinker toys [compared to it], I’m actually very, very excited.”

McQuarrie and Tom have a longstanding working relationship as they will have worked on four Mission: Impossible films, Jack Reacher, and more recently Christopher did some rewrites on Top Gun: Maverick coming out on December 23rd.

It’ll be interesting to see what this project would ultimately be and if they’ll attempt to adapt existing IP or tackle something original.
