‘Neuromancer’: Apple’s 10-Episode Series Based On William Gibson’s Seminal Cyberpunk Novel Coming From Director JD Dillard & Showrunner Graham Roland

Yesterday, it was announced by Apple that they’ll be working with Skydance Television and Anonymous Content on finally moving forward with a streaming series incarnation of the cyberpunk novel “Neuromancer” authored by American-Canadian writer William Gibson, who is considered a godfather of the sci-fi subgenre that marries noir, advanced computer technology, and dystopian elements. Sort of taking things that fellow writer Philip K. Dick was doing with his mind-bending sci-fi stories and the aesthetics of Ridley Scott’s first “Blade Runner” movie into a full-on sci-fi setting that would later influence everything from video games like “Cyberpunk 2077,” movies like “The Matrix,” and plenty of other works of fiction.

In Apple’s announcement about the series, they’ve secured director JD Dillard to helm the show’s pilot, and Graham Roland (“Jack Ryan”) is set as the show’s creator/showrunner.

“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing this iconic property to Apple TV+,” said creators and executive producers Roland and Dillard. “Since we became friends nearly 10 years ago, we’ve looked for something to team up on, so this collaboration marks a dream come true. ‘Neuromancer’ has inspired so much of the science fiction that’s come after it and we’re looking forward to bringing television audiences into Gibson’s definitive ‘cyberpunk’ world.”

Here is the synopsis for the show directly from Apple:

The series will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

Dillard is likely best known for the WWII film “Devotion” which starred Jonathan Majors and Glen Powell as U.S. pilots and had once been attached to direct a mystery “Star Wars” movie for Lucasfilm before it just vanished into thin air. This isn’t the first big sci-fi series for Apple based on an iconic string of books as their popular show “Foundation” is an adaptation of the Isaac Asimov property and also hails from Skydance Television. Gibson’s ‘The Peripheral‘ had been previously turned into a series at Amazon Prime Video with Chloe Grace Moretz and Jack Reynor starring.

Last year, there was a rumor that Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”) was being eyed to play Case, but that has yet to be made official. At one point, director Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) had been trying to make a feature film incarnation at 20th Century Fox around the time he dropped out of making “Deadpool 2” but that never really materialized.  Based on the 1984 Gibson book, it’s part of the “Sprawl” trilogy and was followed by “Count Zero” and “Mona Lisa Overdrive.” This gives Apple plenty of source material from Gibson if they want to keep the cyberpunk series going beyond the first story.

Amazon is also working on its own high-profile cyberpunk streaming series with “Blade Runner 2099” which recently landed “Shogun” director Jonathan van Tulleken.

EXCLUSIVE: ‘Rogue’ Director M.J. Bassett Joins Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Series Reboot

The Ronin can confirm that British director M.J. Bassett is part of the directing team of Amazon’s series reboot of Jack Reacher, previously a film franchise led by Tom Cruise and will have Alan Ritchson (slightly more aligned with Reacher’s stature/size) taking over the role in the show.

Bassett had been once involved with Amblin’s new Halo series but dropped out and recently she was behind the recent Megan Fox actioner Rogue. Her others credits include Altered Carbon, Iron Fist, Nightflyers, Strike Back, Endangered Species, Ash vs Evil Dead, and Silent Hill: Revelation.

Bassett joins The Wachowskis as part of the growing club of trans women directors tackling action projects, the more the merrier.

We previously first reported Amazon hired Bodyguard director Thomas Vincent for Jack Reacher.

The first season is reportedly based on Lee Child’s novel Killing Floor.

Jack Reacher comes to the little town of Margrave looking for information about the mysterious death of a guitar player named Blind Blake. Instead, he finds one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history.

Skydance and Amazon are already partners on their popular Jack Ryan series based on the Tom Clancy novels led by John Krasinski, which is heading into it’s third season.

‘Terminator’: Netflix & Production I.G Developing Anime Series With ‘The Batman’s Mattson Tomlin Set As Showrunner

The Terminator franchise isn’t dead according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Japanese animation studio Production I.G, Skydance, and Netflix are teaming up for a new anime series set within the Terminator universe with Mattson Tomlin set as writer and showrunner. Tomlin worked with Netflix on the superhero film Project Power and co-wrote The Batman with director Matt Reeves.

James Cameron’s Terminator franchise has had a rocky-road with varying degrees of success with sequels. The last entry directed by Tim Miller, Terminator: Dark Fate, was supposed to kick-off a brand new trilogy that producer Cameron was excited to explore but had a bit of trouble at the box office.

The new anime project could breath new life into the franchise when repeated attempts at reviving the films (three times) has been exactly what filmmakers had hoped.

‘G.I. Joe’ Spinoff Series Focusing On Lady Jaye In Development At Amazon From ‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Erik Oleson

Deadline is reporting that Paramount and Skydance are developing a television series for Amazon Prime Video that will focus on G.I. Joe operative Lady Jaye expanding upon the franchise. They’ve hired Erik Oleson, who was the Season 3 showrunner of Netflix’s Daredevil series, to write and showrun the streaming project.

The character appeared in Jon M. Chu’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation (an upgrade from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and was previously played by John Wick actress Adrianne Palicki.

Paramount Pictures is rebooting the franchise with their upcoming film G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes with multiple new actors in key roles. In the origin film we’ll be seeing Henry Golding playing Snakes, Andrew Koji is Storm Shadow, Samara Weaving in the role of Scarlett, and Ursula Corbero is the the new Baroness. The assumption here would be that Lady Jaye would be getting a reboot and new actress as well.

A third G.I. Joe film has been in the works for ages now but when it will actually get made it’s a little unclear.

G.I. Joe is a Hasbro toyline that was rebranded with a cartoon series, animated film, and comic books published by Marvel Comics that led to two feature films with Snake Eyes set to reboot the franchise.

EXCLUSIVE: Amazon’s ‘Jack Reacher’ Series Hires ‘Bodyguard’ Director Thomas Vincent

The Ronin has been able to confirm that Skydance/Amazon has hired French director Thomas Vincent to helm an undisclosed amount of episodes for their new Jack Reacher series starring Alan Ritchson (Titans, Ghosts of War). The Amazon series is a hard reboot of the character previously played by Tom Cruise in two feature films released by Paramount Pictures and based on the novels written by author Lee Child.

The first season is said to be an adaption of the novel The Killing Floor.

Jack Reacher comes to the little town of Margrave looking for information about the mysterious death of a guitar player named Blind Blake. Instead, he finds one of the largest counterfeiting operations in history.

Vincent is likely best known for directing the first three episodes of the hit Netflix series Bodyguard that was led by Richard Madden (Game of Thrones, Eternals).

BODYGUARD – Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of David Budd (Richard Madden), a heroic, but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?

We previously reported that filming is expected to kick-off around mid-April in Toronto.

They’ve also hired production designer Patricio M. Farrell, who worked on The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Skydance is also behind Amazon’s Jack Ryan series starring John Krasinski and developing an original spy series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger for Netflix.

More casting announcements are on the horizon.

Netflix Nabs Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Globetrotting Father-Daughter Spy Series From Skydance

In a shocking twist, Netflix (not Amazon) has landed the untitled spy series being developed by Skydance Television and Scorpion’s Nick Santora. The news coming from Deadline.

They’ve already set Arnold Schwarzenegger and Top Gun: Maverick’s Monica Barbaro as the show’s two main leads.

The project will see the action star return to the spy genre after tackling it in James Cameron’s True Lies and will be Arnold’s first real entry into scripted television/streaming. Arnold previously worked with Skydance on the last two Terminator installments.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Actress Monica Barbaro Takes Leading Role In Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Father-Daughter Spy Series At Amazon

Last month it was reported that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be returning the spy genre with an untitled show at Amazon’s Prime Video from Skydance Television and Scorpion creator Nick Santora. That would focus on a father-daughter duo. Arnold previously worked with Skydance the last two Terminator installments, Terminator: Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate.

Today, Deadline reports that Top Gun: Maverick actress Monica Barbaro has landed that lead role of Arnold’s daughter and the show’s second lead.

Monica plays the only female fighter pilot in the upcoming Tom Cruise sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK – After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.”

Arnold Schwarzenegger Returns To The Spy Genre For Original Skydance Television Series – ‘True Lies’ Series At Disney+ Not Happening?

Arnold Schwarzenegger is finally making his television debut!

Deadline reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Skydance Television are teaming for an original father-daughter spy adventure series from Scorpion creator Nick Santora.

They also mention that the project will be out to streamers soon but I think it’s obvious we’ll they’ll be taking it.

I would bet heavily that the series would end up landing on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, given that Skydance has an existing relationship with Amazon for their Jack Ryan and Jack Reacher shows and multiple high-budgeted Skydance Media films have landed at Netflix.

I’m leaning towards Amazon as Santora is the showrunner and executive producer of their upcoming Jack Reacher series.

Arnold has previously worked with Skydance on the two soft-reboots of the Terminator franchise with Terminator: Genisys and Terminator: Dark Fate, both had trouble earning money at the box office.

You might remember that producer/director McG (Lethal Weapon, Terminator: Salvation, Charlie’s Angels) teased to Collider a while back he was developing a series based on James Cameron’s True Lies series, pitching with the aim for it to land at Disney+ that may have seen Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis potentially reprising their roles.

This news might confirm that True Lies won’t be happening.

Schwarzenegger had been trying for years to get a direct sequel to Conan The Barbarian titled The Legend of King Conan, but hasn’t had much luck getting to the production stage as Universal Pictures has seemingly dropped those plans.

In 2018, it was reported by Deadline that a Conan The Barbarian series was in the works at Amazon. I’m curious if this spy series lands at Amazon that it would help establish a relationship that leads to Arnold reprising the Conan role. Amazon also is currently in production on shows set in the fantasy worlds of Lord of The Rings and The Wheel of Time.
