‘Snow White’: Gal Gadot To Play Evil Queen In Disney’s Live-Action Remake

Disney and director Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer, The Amazin Spider-Man) are behind yet another animated fairy tale movie getting a modern live-action version with Snow White. The studio already hired young actress Rachel Zegler (West Side Story, Shazam!: Fury of The Gods) to play the iconic Disney princess in the new movie.

Deadline is reporting that Israeli actress Gal Gadot has nabbed the antagonist role of the Evil Queen, joining others such as Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, and Cate Blanchette playing female Disney villains. The Evil Queen attempts to poison/kill Snow White when her magic mirror reveals that the young princess is a rival to her own beauty.

Gadot confirmed the report on the red carpet for her upcoming Netflix film, Red Notice.

Technically, this would be her third Disney role after Ralph Breaks The Internet and 20th Century Studios’ murder mystery pic Death On The Nile. Perhaps, this is yet another step towards Gadot potentially joining the Marvel or Star Wars cinematic universes.

We’ll keep my fingers crossed that Marvel Studios considers her Squadron Supreme members Princess Power or Thundra, whenever, they make their live-action debut.

Gal is also attached to Wonder Woman 3, but director Patty Jenkins will be busy with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron for the next two years. It’ll be interesting to see if DC Films attempts to squeeze her in another DCEU before then.

Snow White & The Seven Dwarves is one of the most iconic Disney films as it was their first animated feature film released all the way back in 1937.

SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARVES – Jealous of Snow White’s beauty, the wicked queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter, but later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little miners. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a death-like sleep that can be broken only by a kiss from the prince.

Rachel Zegler Officially Cast In Disney’s Live-Action ‘Snow White’ Movie With Production Set To Begin In 2022

Disney is focusing on making a steady stream of live-action films based on their iconic animation library and one of those upcoming projects is Marc Webb’s Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, a live-action incarnation of the classic 1937 movie.

There is finally a casting update on the Disney flick.

Actress Rachel Zegler has officially joined the project as reported by Deadline and will play Snow White in the live-action fairy tale film, which will begin shooting sometime in 2022. Zelger stars in Steven Spielberg’s Westside Story remake and recently joined David F. Sandberg’s DC Comics sequel Shazam! Fury of The Gods, the latter film is currently filming in Atlanta.

Director Marc Webb was behind 500 Days of Summer and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Snow White & The Huntsman and Mirror, Mirror were previous efforts to bring the story to the big screen with Kristen Stewart and Lily Collins starring as Snow White in their respective pics.

SNOW WHITE & THE SEVEN DWARFS – The Grimm fairy tale gets a Technicolor treatment in Disney’s first animated feature. Jealous of Snow White’s beauty, the wicked queen orders the murder of her innocent stepdaughter, but later discovers that Snow White is still alive and hiding in a cottage with seven friendly little miners. Disguising herself as a hag, the queen brings a poisoned apple to Snow White, who falls into a death-like sleep that can be broken only by a kiss from the prince.

Mark Strong Confirms Dr. Thaddeus Sivana Won’t Appear In ‘Shazam! Fury of The Gods’ As Production Is About To Begin In Atlanta

The DCEU is chugging along with David F. Sandberg is set to direct Shazam! Fury of The Gods with a release date of June 2, 2023. Returning cast members include Zachary Levi as Shazam, and Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez, Meagan Good, Michelle Borth, Ross Butler, D.J. Cotrona, and Adam Brody.

The new additions are Helen Mirren as Hespera, Lucy Liu as Kalypso, and Rachel Zegler.

It doesn’t look like Mark Strong’s Dr. Thaddeus Sivana will be coming back for the next film as he revealed to Den of Geek and is happy to see a group of female villains stepping up for the sequel.

STRONG: “Dr. Sivana isn’t in Shazam! 2. What’s happened is, I think Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu and perhaps someone else — they’ve got some female villains in. And to be honest with you, I’m very happy to take a back seat to some female villains and let them have a go, because judging by the work that Emma Thompson and Emma Stone have done in Cruella, it’s about time.”

However, Mark didn’t close the door on Shazam! 3.

STRONG: “Who knows? He’s still got unfinished business with Mister Mind.”

Filming on Fury of The Gods is confirmed for Atlanta, Georgia as the film’s lead Zachary Levi officially landed in the city not too long ago as revealed by a recent Instagram post. The same city that is being used to shoot Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, a foe of Levi’s Shazam! and will introduce the Justice Society to DCEU. The proximity to the two productions could see a crossover sooner than expected, but we’ll have to wait and see.

SHAZAM! – We all have a superhero inside of us — it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In 14-year-old Billy Batson’s case, all he needs to do is shout out one word to transform into the adult superhero Shazam. Still a kid at heart, Shazam revels in the new version of himself by doing what any other teen would do — have fun while testing out his newfound powers. But he’ll need to master them quickly before the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana can get his hands on Shazam’s magical abilities.

Helen Mirren To Play Villain In ‘Shazam! Fury of The Gods’

Shazam! is one of the more kid-friendly comic book franchises and I had a lot fun with the original, partly thanks to director David F. Sandberg having a great sense of humor and not taking himself too seriously. It didn’t hurt that it shot mostly in Toronto.

Sandberg is returning for the sequel, titled Shazam! Fury of The Gods, and there is news about who is playing the film’s villain. As they’ve secured Oscar-winner Helen Mirren to play the role of Hespera according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hespera is the daughter of Atlas and the sister of Rachel Zegler’s character.

Mirren has tipped her toes into the world of these types of films in the past with Bruce Willis’ RED movies and she played Mother Shaw in the last couple of Fast & Furious films including the upcoming release F9.

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is set to begin shooting next month in Atlanta and fans are curious when they’ll see a crossover between Shazam! and Black Adam because the two characters are directly connected in the comics However, both Johnson and Zachary Levi have downplayed the possibility of that happening before Black Adam 2 or Shazam! 3.

It makes sense as Black Adam is going to be too busy introducing the Justice Society.

Fury of The Gods is set for release by Warner Bros. on June 2, 2023.
