‘Captain Marvel 2’: Zawe Ashton Tapped To Play A Villain – Will She Play Skrull Queen Veranke?

Deadline was the first to break the news that Marvel Studios has hired actress Zawe Ashton to play an undisclosed villain in Captain Marvel 2.

Candyman’s Nia DaCosta is directing a cast that consists of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Ms. Marvel’s Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, and WandaVsion’s Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau.

Given that Secret Invasion is said to be a crossover event series on Disney+, there is a good shot that Ashton is playing a Skrull, possibly Queen Veranke. When the Fantastic Four rights reverted back to Marvel they also got full control of the Skrulls, ability to use various characters such as the Super-Skrull and their ability to mimic/copy the power-sets of superheroes. A female version of Super-Skrull could be nifty as well, even though that character is primarily known as a Fantastic Four baddie.

However, there are plenty of other cosmic villains Ashton could end up playing.

Moonstone could be another option as well.

Secret Invasion might help established the events that will be later explored in Captain Marvel 2 as both productions are expected to take place in the United Kingdom later this year. Captain Marvel introduced the Skrulls as the enemies of the Kree Empire, only to reveal they were refugees seeking a new home and we might end up villainous incarnations surface which could become a big problem for Earth.

This a good chance that we could see Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Randall Park, and Kat Dennings take roles in the sequel as well given the likelihood S.W.O.R.D. will have a large part to play and depending on how their respective Disney+ series end.

Captain Marvel 2 currently has a release date of November 11th, 2022 and could suggest a production start in summer/fall.

Horror Flick ‘Candyman’ Bumped From October To 2021 By Universal

Universal Pictures has officially moved their new Candyman movie from Captain Marvel 2 director Nia DaCosta to unnamed spot in 2021 after a previous release date of October 16th. The move is likely due to the weak box office as theaters have slowly reopened and allows Candyman to have a theatrical release.

Nia also made the following statement on Twitter.

DACOSTA: “We made Candyman to be seen in theaters. Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories–how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.”

“We wanted the horror and humanity of Candyman to be experienced in a collective, a community, so we’re pushing Candyman to next year, to ensure that everyone can see the film, in theaters, and share in that experience.”

The film has been called a “spiritual sequel” while I was able to dig up details about Candyman which includes them making the events of the original film canon in this new installment.

We’ll have to wait and see how long we’ll be expected to wait for the horror movie.

CANDYMAN – For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials. With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo; HBO’s Euphoria, Assassination Nation) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.

‘Captain Marvel 2’ Indeed Set To Shoot In The UK

This morning, it was first revealed by Charles Murphy that Captain Marvel 2 is going to be shooting in the United Kingdom. A bit of a shakeup after the last film was primarily shot in the United States taking advantage of the California tax credits.

We can also confirm the information is correct and that Marvel Studios film will indeed film in the UK.

Other MCU projects shooting across the pond include Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness at Longcross Studios, Ant-Man 3 (likely at Pinewood Studios UK) and the Disney+ series Moon Knight.

The sequel most likely would be heading to Pinewood Studios UK. The same facility recently used for Black Widow and Eternals.

Candyman director Nia DaCosta was recently hired to direct from a script penned by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell. Megan’s series WandaVision will be introducing the adult version of Monica Rambeau and S.W.O.R.D., which are expected to be important elements of Captain Marvel 2.

Brie Larson is set to reprise the role of Carol Danvers with an assumption that Samuel L. Jackson, Teyonah Parris, and Ben Mendelsohn will have roles as well.

In post-COVID-19 Hollywood, it really isn’t easy to predict when the sequel will begin production as there are two other major Marvel Studios films expected to shoot there that haven’t started along with a Disney+ series, making the production space a little crowded when you have to factor in multiple studios are shooting films next year as well.

Moving from California to England is also a good idea when wildfires became an issue during the first installment and continue to be a statewide problem. Not to mention the large population of California makes it a prime target for a resurgence of new COVID-19 cases. The live-action Little Mermaid movie is shooting at Pinewood and their comfort resuming the production could be another reason why Disney wanted to move Captain Marvel 2 to a UK facility.

Disney has given Captain Marvel 2 a release date of July 8th, 2022 but remains to be seen if they’ll stick to it if they end up having scheduling issues.

FEATURE: ‘Captain Marvel 2′ Guaranteed To Include Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau In A Significant Role

We finally got a big update on Captain Marvel 2 with the hiring of director Nia DaCosta and it might be yet another hint that Marvel Studios is preparing to give Monica Rambeau a sizable role in the upcoming sequel.

Here is a string of reasons why actress Teyonah Parris will likely be showing up in Captain Marvel 2 as Monica.

  • A young Monica Rambeau was introduced in Captain Marvel setting up Carol’s friendship with her mother Maria, a fellow female Air Force pilot.
  • An adult Monica Rambeau will appear alongside S.W.O.R.D. (cosmic counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D.) in WandaVision, played by actress Teyonah Parris. Both having an important role to play in Captain Marvel 2 wouldn’t be at all shocking.
  • WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell is currently working on the sequel’s script and has already tackled the character.
  • Captain Marvel 2 director Nia DaCosta recently worked with Teyonah Parris on her horror film Candyman
  • Rambeau took on the Captain Marvel mantle before Carol Danvers in 1982. She more recently uses the hero name Spectrum, a member of the Ultimates team alongside Carol Danvers and T’Challa aka Black Panther.
  • There is a good shot that Monica could replace Nick Fury as Carol’s buddy/sidekick in the sequel as their friendship was previously established.

‘Captain Marvel 2’ Reportedly Adds ‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta

It looks like another Phase 4 film has landed a director!

Deadline is reporting that Marvel has chosen a new director for Captain Marvel 2 instead of bringing back Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who directed the first installment. According to the new report they’ve hired Nia DaCosta the director of Little Woods and the upcoming Candyman film for MGM Studios that is produced by Jordan Peele.

This news has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney.

Brie Larson is returning as Carol Danvers and it’s a little unknown when cameras will begin rolling.

Considering the current release date of the film is July 8th, 2022, starting production next spring/summer would make sense, however, it’s unknown if the backlog of projects at Marvel Studios due to COVID-19 will have an impact on that.

Feature films like Thor: Love & Thunder, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man 3, and Ant-Man 3 are most likely going to shoot in 2021 alongside various new Disney+ shows. There is a small chance that stuff like Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2 might see their shoots pushed to 2022 with rescheduled release dates sometime in 2023.

Details on the upcoming project are scarce but with WandaVision‘s Megan McDonnell having been tapped to write the sequel this would suggest that it could have a huge connection to S.W.O.R.D. (S.H.I.E.L.D.’s intergalactic counterpart) and an adult Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris, both being introduced in the Disney+ series.

We most likely will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who last we saw was busy on vacation as a group of Skrulls were building a space station. That station would most likely end up being The Peak or another base of operations for S.W.O.R.D. considering that humans aren’t likely able to building something like that as quickly as Skrulls.

It remains to be seen if Ms. Marvel‘s Kamala Khan will also join the project but there is a good shot the teenager might have a role to play in Captain Marvel 2.

There have been unconfirmed internet rumors of the sequel tackling the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. That might just be a little too ambitious given the scale of that story and the volume of heroes/actors needed to be involved for that to come together.
