'Supergirl': Jason Momoa Finally Lands Dream DC Comics Role Of Lobo For New DCU After Playing Aquaman

‘Supergirl’: Jason Momoa Finally Lands Dream DC Comics Role Of Lobo For New DCU After Playing Aquaman

After the years-long tease that “Aquaman” actor Jason Momoa (“Game of Thrones,” ‘Dune”) could get a secondary DC Comics role with Lobo, it has been officially announced that he’ll be playing the violent smart-mouthed alien bounty hunter in “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.”

Long before the Snyderverse or “Aquaman,” Momoa had been making the convention rounds for ages (going back to his days on “Stargate: Atlantis” and “Game of Thrones”) and kept campaigning to play Lobo. This was back when Warner Bros. had been developing a solo feature film for decades focused on the notable Superman villain and once had Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“Watchmen”) in the mix to play The Main Man.

DC Studios co-CEO, James Gunn, has previously confirmed that filming on “Supergirl” was expected to start next month, so, more casting announcements are likely coming in hot. They’ve previously secured director Craig Gillespie (“Cruella”) and Australian actress Milly Alcock (“House of The Dragon”) is set to play the titular Kryptonian heroine with a release date set for June 26, 2026.

Lobo is essentially the DC Comics version of Deadpool and Wolverine, having more of a satirical/mature leaning and in the wake of the massive success of the “Deadpool” trilogy (the last installment earning a hefty $1.3 billion), finally adding him to a comic book universe spearheaded by Gunn always made sense.

Placing Momoa in the Lobo role, after the Snyderverse ended with the DCU reset, was an early tease from the trades when Gunn took over the franchise and launched DC Studios with Peter Safran. So, while putting him in “Supergirl” is a surprise, the casting isn’t too shocking. Gunn and Momoa nearly worked together on the first “Guardians of The Galaxy” film when he was originally going to play Drax (you can see some early Drax concept art with Momoa’s face being used), but bowed out over the stingy money they offered.

Former Batman Contender Matthias Schoenaerts Tapped To Play 'Supergirl' Villain In DCU Reboot

Former Batman Contender Matthias Schoenaerts Tapped To Play ‘Supergirl’ Villain In New DCU Movie

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” has landed its second actor as DC Studios, and Warner Bros. has selected the person who will play the reboot’s main villain. Deadline has revealed that Matthias Schoenaerts (“The Old Guard”) has been tapped, assuming the part will be Krem of The Yellow Hills from the comic book the studio is adapting for this new off-world adventure.

According to director Zack Snyder, Schoenaerts had been once considered to play Bruce Wayne/Batman in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League” had Ben Affleck backed out of the role. So, returning to the world of DC Comics is certainly a full-circle moment for the Belgian actor. He was recently seen alongside actress Kate Winslet in the HBO series “The Regime.”

Of course, this isn’t the first casting on the film as fellow HBO alumni Milly Alcock from “House of The Dragon” was previously announced as the titular superhero.

Aussie filmmaker Craig Gillespie (“Cruella,” ‘Dumb Money,” “I, Tonya”) is set in the director’s chair for the superhero flick that is currently eying a January start in England and was previously announced to have a June 26, 2026, release date.

More casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks and months, leading up to the production start next year.

‘House Of The Dragon’ Star Milly Alcock Among Contenders In The Mix For The DCU’s New Supergirl

Director James Gunn‘s “Superman: Legacy” has a lot riding on its broad shoulders as the film will not only usher in the brand new version of the Man of Steel for the DCU but will be the first big entry into the newly formed studios’ cinematic universe that will be fleshed-out in the first phase over the next couple of years. With that in mind, another big superhero is about to join that new universe and one that many had suspected could be introduced in “Superman” Legacy” as Gunn attempts to cram as much world-building into his upcoming superhero pic as humanly possible.

It sounds like Clark’s cousin from Krypton is indeed appearing in the DCU film before getting her own feature film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” DC Studios is reportedly now looking at actresses to play Kara Zor-El. Those candidates up for the new Supergirl role according to Deadline include actresses Milly Alcock (“House of The Dragon”), Emilia Jones (“CODA”), and Meg Donnelly. The outlet also alludes to screen tests for the studio are likely going to happen within the next month or so, suggesting they don’t have a frontrunner. The assumption is that whoever is selected will be introduced in “Legacy,” given the proximity to the production in Atlanta, before moving on to “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as that project has yet to secure or announce a director. However, how large of a cameo/role Supergirl could have is up for debate until Gunn chimes in on the report.

A great group of young actresses who could all make a large impact playing Supergirl, the part had been more recently played by Sasha Calle in “The Flash.” But as this news has been announced, it would mean that Calle will no longer be playing the part as DC Studios attempts to reset and recast a majority of these DC Comics roles. This likely means we’re going to learn a lot more about what their plans are concerning the solo film that has been in development for nearly a year now at DC Studios. Screenwriters Oren Uziel and Ana Nogueira are said to be currently writing the solo film’s script.

“Superman: Legacy” is still on track to hit its July 11, 2025, release date with a fantastic cast that consists of David Corenswet (as Clark Kent/Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luther), Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Isabel Merced (Hawkgirl), and Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern).
