Martin Scorsese’s Western Crime Drama ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Lands Global Wide Release On October 20

Many film fans are extremely excited about the prospect of a new Martin Scorsese film is just around the corner with “Killers of The Flower Moon” heading to theaters this fall and there has been an exciting development on that front. Today, it was announced by Apple that the film will no longer have a limited release date as that has since been replaced with a global-wide release on October 20. Securing audiences will be able to see the film in a theatrical setting and that includes the IMAX format, before its streaming debut on Apple TV+ later on.

Just yesterday, it was revealed by “Killers of The Moon” author David Grann that the next film Scorsese will be making is an adaptation of Grann’s shipwreck novel “The Wager” which already has the backing of Apple Original Films and will see Marty’s longtime muse DiCaprio take the lead role for their seventh movie together.

At the turn of the 20th century, oil brought a fortune to the Osage Nation, who became some of the richest people in the world overnight. The wealth of these Native Americans immediately attracted white interlopers, who manipulated, extorted, and stole as much Osage money as they could before resorting to murder. Based on a true story and told through the improbable romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone), “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an epic western crime saga, where real love crosses paths with unspeakable betrayal. Also starring Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Brendan Fraser, Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, and Jillian Dion, Killers of the Flower Moon is directed by Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese from a screenplay by Eric Roth and Scorsese, based on David Grann’s best-selling book.

‘The Wager’: Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio Will Next Reunite For Shipwreck Thriller At Apple, Their Seventh Film Together

We’re all excited to see how Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of The Flower Moon” does with global audiences and critics. It’s a film about a string of murders plagued by the oil-rich indigenous group, The Osage Nation, in the 1920s and based on real-life events that eventually drew the attention of the FBI. While the filmmaker has been circling and developing multiple future projects over the years, it looks like we have a better idea of what exactly is coming next and will have a connection to that upcoming release.

During an interview with French outlet Telerama, “Killers of The Flower Moon” author David Grann revealed that the next Scorsese film will be a feature adaption of his 1700s-set high-seas novel, “The Wager: A Story of Shipwreck, Mutiny & Murder.” And as we’d all assume, the director’s muse and Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio is said to be taking the lead of the period drama. “The Wager” would mark the duo’s seventh film together and it had been previously reported to have landed financing from Apple back in 2022, where Scorsese recently made “Killers of The Flower Moon.” Other players involved include Imperative Entertainment, Sieklia Productions, and Appian Way Productions.

That aforementioned novel’s synopsis reads as follows:

Set in the 1740s, Wager’s story is set in motion when a patched-together boat with 30 emaciated men landed on the coast of Brazil. The men were the surviving crew of a British ship that was chasing a Spanish vessel and had crashed onto an island in South America’s Patagonia region. Their tales of surviving the seas and elements made them heroes. However, six months later another vessel, even more beat up than the first one, ended up on the coat of Chile, this one with three men. These new sailors charged that the other men were actually mutineers.

Given the project is going to feature multiple sailors, it is assumed we should end up seeing a bunch of actors from recent Scorsese films landing supporting roles alongside DiCaprio. I would be extremely shocked if English actors Stephen Graham (“The Irishman,” “Gangs of New York”), Andrew Garfield (“Silence”), and Jack Huston (“The Irishman,” “Boardwalk Empire”) didn’t show up in the pic or were approached during the casting process. “Oppenheimer” breakout Cillian Murphy might also be an actor Scorsese pursues, given the obvious awards chatter already surrounding the actor for the atomic bomb biopic and his previous work on “Dunkirk” and “In The Heart of The Sea” would mean he would already have experience with the film’s setting after making his own fair share of boat dramas.

However, given the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, it’s unclear when filming on “The Wager” is expected to take place given that prep and pre-production likely won’t be happening anytime soon. Other Scorsese projects that had been in the works include a biopic on Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia that had Jonah Hill (“The Wolf of Wall Street”) attached to star as the frontman and another long-gestating film about President Teddy Roosevelt that would star DiCaprio in that role.

Keanu Reeves In Talks To Join Martin Scorsese’s Period Serial Killer Series ‘The Devil In The White City’

A decade ago, a feature film adaptation of the Erik Larson book The Devil In The White City was being developed as a directing vehicle at Paramount Pictures for Martin Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star in the American serial tale set years before the turn of the century in 1893.

The project was more recently converted into a streaming series at Hulu and there is now word from Deadline that Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix) is being courted for a role, this would be the actor’s first jump to television excluding the made-for-TV film Babes In Toyland co-starring Drew Barrymore.

It’s unclear if Reeves would be playing the role of architect Daniel H. Burnham or the doctor/serial killer Henry H. Holmes.

Here’s how Deadline describes the project:

The Devil in the White City tells the true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical “Murder Castle” on fair grounds – a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women. The story takes the viewer on a tour of murder, romance and mystery in the gilded age.

Todd Field will direct the first two episodes.

If Keanu Reeves signs on it’s unknown how this would affect the shoot for John Wick 5, the final chapter in the Lionsgate action series. The final installment that could go into production before or after Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot, which has British actor Henry Cavill attached for a role, stars shooting.

Lionsgate recently announced that John Wick 4 has been delayed to March 24, 2023.

‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’: Brendan Fraser Nabs Role In Martin Scorsese’s Thriller

Actor Brendan Fraser has been having a bit of a carer resurgence taking roles in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move and Darren Aronofsky’s drama The Whale, but the actor has nabbed another high-profile project working with a legendary director.

Deadline reports that Brendan Fraser will play lawyer WS Hamilton in Martin Scorsese’s new thriller Killers of The Flower Moon, joining a cast that includes Jesse Plemons, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro.

Based on David Grann’s best-selling book, the Apple Original Film adaptation takes place in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. The Osage Nation, who were the richest people per capita in the world, were killed one by one after oil was discovered on their land. As the death toll rose, the newly-created FBI took up the case and unraveled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.

DiCaprio will play Ernest Burkhart, the nephew if powerful rancher played by Robert De Niro and the husband of Lily Gladstone’s Mollie. Plemons took over DiCaprio’s former role of FBI Agent Tom White.

Filming had been taking place in Oklahoma.

Martin Scorsese has made a push to hire a large group of Native American actors, many unknown to Hollywood/audiences but the project has been controversial having a non-Native filmmaker making a film that chronicles the pain and brutal string of murders of a community he isn’t a member of.

Killers of The Flower Moon won’t be the first time the director has explored foreign cultures and historical events with previous pictures such as the Japan-set Silence and Tibet-set Kundun.

A release date has yet to be announced by Apple, but it’s assumed it could be ready for awards consideration in the fall. However, this will likely be depend on how much visual effects will be involved and how quickly they’ll be able to have a cut ready to go.

Quentin Tarantino Muses About A 3 Hour & 20 Minutes Cut Of ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ If He Had Been Able To Make It Longer

Quentin Tarantino fans like myself have longed for extended cuts of his films, case in point, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, is a version where the two movies are combined. However, this version hasn’t been released or if it has I certainly missed out on it.

This idea of extended cuts is more or less directors being allowed to show the film without studio expectations of runtime, the longer a movie if the theory is that audiences will get bored or will limit the amount of screenings that can be played in a theater.

When it came to Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, Tarantino left out a bunch of footage but decided to write a novelization of the film to expand those characters and the world they inhabit. During a chat with comedian/actor Marc Maron on his podcast WTF With Marc Maron (via The Playlist), Quentin revealed that if he were to assemble a longer cut with the footage he took out it could end up around 3 hours and 20 minutes.

“I think if I were to put it all together, in a way where I would use everything that I wanted and didn’t have to worry about time, it would probably be around 3 hours and 20 minutes or something,” Tarantino said to host Marc Maron.

Hopefully, that version can see the light of day but I wouldn’t count your chickens, just yet.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD – Actor Rick Dalton gained fame and fortune by starring in a 1950s television Western, but is now struggling to find meaningful work in a Hollywood that he doesn’t recognize anymore. He spends most of his time drinking and palling around with Cliff Booth, his easygoing best friend and longtime stunt double. Rick also happens to live next door to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate — the filmmaker and budding actress whose futures will forever be altered by members of the Manson Family.

Jesse Plemons To Play FBI Agent In Martin Scorsese’s Thriller ‘Killers of The Flower Moon’ – DiCaprio Takes Smaller Supporting Role

There is news via The Hollywood Reporter that Leonardo DiCaprio will be taking a different role in Martin Scorsese’s expensive thriller Killers of The Flower Moon as Jesse Plemons is reportedly taking over Leo’s part of FBI Agent Tom White.

DiCaprio will instead play Ernest Burkhart, the nephew if powerful rancher played by Robert De Niro and the husband of Lily Gladstone’s Mollie.

Plemons is best known for his television work on shows such as AMC’s Breaking Bad and FX’s Fargo, he recently worked on the Netflix drama I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Martin Scorsese’s gangster flick The Irishman.

Filming is said to begin this May and could become a conflict with making Jordan Peele’s secret project for Universal, as the outlet confirms Plemons is indeed being eyed for a lead role there as well.

Apple Teaming With Paramount For Martin Scorsese’s Pricey Crime Drama ‘Killers of The Flower Moon’

When various reports surfaced that Martin Scorsese’s next film Killers of The Flower Moon had its budget balloon to $200-230+ million it seemed like Paramount Pictures wouldn’t likely move forward with it.

The project is based on the novel Killers Of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders And The Birth Of The FBI by author David Grann with a script penned by screenwriter Eric Roth (Dune, Munich, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON – A mystery about a series of murders of wealthy Osage Native Americans in Oklahoma in the early 1920s, after oil deposits were discovered beneath their land. The ensuing investigation established the FBI and was a pivotal moment in the evolution of America from its frontier era.

Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are set for the lead roles. Leo and Robert haven’t worked together since the 1993 film This Boy’s Life, where De Niro played Leo’s abusive stepfather.

Multiple suitors had been in the mix to help finance including Universal, MGM, Apple, and Netflix.

Deadline first reported that a deal seemingly has been struck with Apple partnering to help cover the costs. The film will be distributed first theatrically by Paramount and the film would later become an exclusive streaming title on Apple TV+.

Production was expected to take place this spring/summer in the state of Oklahoma before the Coronavirus and budgetary issues delayed things.

Apple had recently acquired the Tom Hanks WWII film Greyhound from Sony Pictures as another Apple TV+ exclusive.

Hopefully, we’ll start hearing more casting news shortly.
