‘Barbarian’ Director Zach Cregger’s Next Film ‘Weapons’ Lands At New Line Cinema

One of the more interesting horror projects that got released last year was Zach Cregger’s Barbarian, without spoiling things it showcased the filmmaker’s great handling of the satirical horror film with plenty of misdirection and surprises that certainly kept audiences on their toes. Oddly enough, the filmmaker originally comes from the world of sketch comedy being a cast member on the television series The Whitest Kids You Know and has now reinvented himself as potentially the next Jordan Peele. There is finally word on what his feature will be despite a lack of plot details.

The popularity of Barbarian had led to a massive bidding war for his next project, titled Weapons. When the dust has settled, The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Cregger landed a eight figure deal from New Line Cinema to write and direct. He’s also secured final cut on Weapons, backend participation, and the project has already been greenlit. All things considered to be a director’s dream when it comes to getting creative control over a film that will ultimately distributed by a major studio. We’re still waiting on what the film will exactly focus on but a synopsis is likely months away from being announced by anyone.

Also, it was mentioned in the report that if Weapons is a big hit for them they are said to be open to making Cregger a “significant horror voice” for Warner Bros. Discovery/New Line moving forward. Potentially mirror the deal that Peele secured with Universal after Get Out became a massive pulpy landmark in the horror genre leading him to easily have Us and Nope greenlit without a studio meddling with his vision for those films.

Speaking of Peele, according to reports from Deadline the director’s production company Monkeypaw with the help of Universal Pictures attempted to bid on the film but ultimately lost out to New Line when they offered $38 million to buy the pic which includes budget and fees. Universal reportedly offered $7 million less.

Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to learn more about Weapons.

Daniel has recently been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his work in Judas & The Black Messiah.

After Jesse Plemons had to drop-out of talks to focus on Martin Scorsese’s crime thriller Killers of The Flower Moon, another sought-after actor is in talks for a role. According to Deadline, Minari’s Steven Yeun is in negotiations to join the Jordan Peele movie. Yeun is also in the Oscar race this year, however, is up for Best Actor thanks to the wonderful performance in Best Picture hopeful Minari.

Jesse Plemons To Play FBI Agent In Martin Scorsese’s Thriller ‘Killers of The Flower Moon’ – DiCaprio Takes Smaller Supporting Role

There is news via The Hollywood Reporter that Leonardo DiCaprio will be taking a different role in Martin Scorsese’s expensive thriller Killers of The Flower Moon as Jesse Plemons is reportedly taking over Leo’s part of FBI Agent Tom White.

DiCaprio will instead play Ernest Burkhart, the nephew if powerful rancher played by Robert De Niro and the husband of Lily Gladstone’s Mollie.

Based on David Grann’s best-selling book, the Apple Original Film adaptation takes place in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a string of brutal murders of Osage Nation Native Americans, which came to be known as the Reign of Terror. The Osage Nation, who were the richest people per capita in the world, were killed one by one after oil was discovered on their land. As the death toll rose, the newly-created FBI took up the case and unraveled a chilling conspiracy and one of the most monstrous crimes in American history.

Plemons is best known for his television work on shows such as AMC’s Breaking Bad and FX’s Fargo, he recently worked on the Netflix drama I’m Thinking of Ending Things and Martin Scorsese’s gangster flick The Irishman.

Filming is said to begin this May and could become a conflict with making Jordan Peele’s secret project for Universal, as the outlet confirms Plemons is indeed being eyed for a lead role there as well.

Jordan Peele Reportedly Taps Keke Palmer & Daniel Kaluuya As Leads In His Next Film Coming July 2022

Deadline reports that actress Keke Palmer has joined the cast of Jordan Peele’s next feature film for Universal Pictures. They’re also backing up a previous report from The Illuminerdi that Get Out breakout-star Daniel Kaluuya is negotiating to reunite with Peele on the untitled film.

Illuminerdi also claimed that Daniel’s Judas & The Black Messiah co-star Jesse Plemons would be in the film as well, but this has yet to be supported by the trades. Filming they suggested would begin this April in Los Angeles, California.

Depending on when the Peele project shoots this could mean that Kaluuya might not be returning for Marvel’s Black Panther 2 that had been expected to begin shooting around June/July in Atlanta. Although, an April start and if they finish quick enough it likely won’t hinder his involvement. But given how many productions have been delayed or paused due to COVID-19 it’s hard to make assumptions about any film project finishing up on schedule.

Details about the project are scarce but Peele’s last two films skewed into the body horror realm.

Jordan’s movies are essentially a license to print money as Get Out was made for $4.5 million and ended-up making $255.4 million at the global box office. His follow-up Us earned a similar amount at $255.1 million but cost $20 million, dipping slightly into that return but still strong successes given they were both original takes on the horror genre.

The secretive project is set for a release by Universal Pictures on July 22nd, 2022.

Jordan Peele’s Mystery Movie For Universal Releases On July 22nd, 2022

While we didn’t any new details about Jordan Peele’s third directorial effort for Universal Pictures, the studio announced via Deadline that the untitled film’s release date has been set for July 22nd, 2022 a week after Fantastic Beasts 3 and in the third week of release of Captain Marvel 2. This would suggest Peele’s project will have some stiff competition opening weekend.

Details on Jordan’s next feature film haven’t been made public but his last two films Get Out and Us skewed into the societal horror sub-genre. Peele won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his work on Get Out.

I’ll keep my hopes up for him to tackle something more in the realm of science fiction.

As a producer he’s a busy bee as Jordan is behind HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Amazon’s Hunters, The Twilight Zone reboot, the upcoming soft-reboot of horror flick Candyman directed by Captain Marvel 2’s Nia DaCosta, and is reportedly developing a remake of The People Under The Stairs.

While I was slightly let down with Us, I’m beyond excited to see what he’s planning on doing next.

Jordan Peele To Produce A Remake of Wes Craven’s Horror Film ‘The People Under The Stairs’ For Universal

With reboots of both The Twilight Zone and Candyman already under his belt, Collider reports that Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) will be producing a feature film remake of 1991 horror film The People Under The Stairs for Universal Pictures.

However, Jordan Peele is only expected to produce with Win Rosenfled.

Peele will produce the remake alongside Win Rosenfeld via their Monkeypaw Productions banner, and though Peele is not expected to direct the film himself, it remains unclear whether he and/or Rosenfeld will have a hand in writing the script, as they did in co-writing Candyman alongside director Nia DaCosta.

The original was directed by horror legend Wes Craven, who created Nightmare On Elm Street and Scream franchises.

THE PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS – When young Fool (Brandon Adams) breaks into the home of his family’s greedy and uncaring landlords, he discovers a disturbing scenario where incestuous adult siblings have mutilated a number of boys and kept them imprisoned under stairs in their large, creepy house. As Fool attempts to flee before the psychopaths can catch him, he meets their daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer), who has been spared any extreme discipline by her deranged parents. Can Fool and Alice escape before it’s too late?

Horror Flick ‘Candyman’ Bumped From October To 2021 By Universal

Universal Pictures has officially moved their new Candyman movie from Captain Marvel 2 director Nia DaCosta to unnamed spot in 2021 after a previous release date of October 16th. The move is likely due to the weak box office as theaters have slowly reopened and allows Candyman to have a theatrical release.

Nia also made the following statement on Twitter.

DACOSTA: “We made Candyman to be seen in theaters. Not just for the spectacle but because the film is about community and stories–how they shape each other, how they shape us. It’s about the collective experience of trauma and joy, suffering and triumph, and the stories we tell around it.”

“We wanted the horror and humanity of Candyman to be experienced in a collective, a community, so we’re pushing Candyman to next year, to ensure that everyone can see the film, in theaters, and share in that experience.”

The film has been called a “spiritual sequel” while I was able to dig up details about Candyman which includes them making the events of the original film canon in this new installment.

We’ll have to wait and see how long we’ll be expected to wait for the horror movie.

CANDYMAN – For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II; HBO’s Watchmen, Us) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris; If Beale Street Could Talk, The Photograph), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials. With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo; HBO’s Euphoria, Assassination Nation) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifying wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.
