‘TRON: Ares’: First-Look Image Of Ares As Disney’s Cyberpunk Legacy Sequel Racing To Theaters In 2025

Next year is going to have some pretty big live-action Disney films coming to the big screen with “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” “Fantastic Four,” “Blade,” and “Avatar 3” all on the horizon. Another big project was just announced with “TRON: Ares,” aka “Tron 3” officially set to be out in 2025 as well. The legacy sequel hails from director  Joachim Rønning

Disney has dropped a first-look image from the third installment on multiple social media accounts featuring Jared Leto‘s character Ares, red in previous films tended to represent the bad guys, and the film’s early synopsis seems to indicate he’s no good. Then again, it does say “Dillinger Systems” on his back a nod to the antagonist of the original film, and if you remember there was a cameo by current Oscar-nominee Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”) as Dillinger’s son.

“The new film centers around a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”

You can view that first-look image of Ares and his costume that was practically made by the talent folks at Weta Workshop.

Other actors assembled for the film that is shooting in Vancouver until late April or early May include Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education,” “The X-Files”), Cameron Monaghan (“Star Wars Jedi”), Evan Peters (“X-Men: Days of Future Past”), Jodie Turner-Smith (“Without Remorse”), and Sarah Desjardins (“Yellowjackets”). There really haven’t been any official indicators that we’ll see returning cast members from “TRON: Legacy.”

Speaking of “Legacy,” we are extremely curious about who Disney ends up hiring to score “Ares” after Daft Punk‘s previous score is considered a massive highlight of the last installment but their break-up would make it impossible for them to score the entire film as the former group. I was campaigning for fellow French electronic artist Kavinsky to fill those shoes earlier in the year.

“TRON: Ares” is set to be released sometime in 2025, although, Disney hasn’t even the cyberpunk adventure film an official date as of yet. The open dates on Disney’s slate for next year that could be where “TRON: Ares” lands include April 11, May 9, July 2, and August 15, We’re most likely looking at a spring/summer release date and August 15 does feel like a good spot for the pic.

‘Tron 3’ Enlists Actress Gillian Anderson As Production Is Finally Underway

Disney had been looking to bring a third installment of “TRON” with a cast that included Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Greta Lee, and Cameron Monaghan. The cyberpunk flicks focus on a digital world that sees human protagonists inserted where computer programs/game sprites are living humanoid beings. This next one is titled “TRON: Ares,” aka, “TRON 3” and had its shoot in Vancouver paused last summer but things are up and running again.

A new addition has joined the Disney sequel’s cast as Deadline reports veteran actress Gillian Anderson (“Sex Education,” “The Crown”) has taken a role. Anderson isn’t a stranger to productions in Vancouver as her acclaimed sci-fi series “The X-Files” was mainly shot in the Canadian province throughout its time on the airwaves.

Meanwhile, director Joachim Rønning took to Instagram over the weekend to announce that after delaying its original start last mid-August due to the Hollywood strikes, production on “TRON 3” has begun and teased the film’s new logo. We can confirm they hope to have the film all wrapped by the end of April. Disney has yet to give the film an official release date. You can view that post below.

The sad aspect of the third installment aside from not brining back “TRON: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinski after his billion-dollar hit “Top Gun: Maverick,” is that we saw the break-up of Parisian electro-duo Daft Punk, who had scored the last film. While Disney isn’t likely going to have them return (can’t rule out a solo score from one of them) one way to potentially replace them is hiring another French electro group, potentially one of their peers. I suggested over the weekend on Twitter that Disney take a serious look at Kavinsky, who has worked with The Weeknd and even featured in the opening of Nicolas Winding Refn’s neon-soaked modern noir, “Drive.”

Tom Hardy Planning ‘Venom 3’ & ‘Morbius’ Director Daniel Espinosa Spoils Eddie Brock Cameo

Tom Hardy is returning to the Eddie Brock role in Venom: Let There be Carnage, which he’ll earn a “story by” credit and is sounds like he’s already preparing for the potential of a third film. Hardy recently did a lengthy interview with Esquire and brought-up that he’s already in early planning stages for a Venom 3, but wasn’t ready to stay that it was sure bet as Sony Pictures still hasn’t greenlit it.

“I’m thinking about the third movie as well, because I think you need to write that at the same time. A third won’t be greenlit until the second is successful, but the studio were really, really pleased with number two.”

The British actor was also hopeful for crossovers and it looks like Morbius might be where that first happens.

Swedish outlet Movie Zine (via The Direct) recently spoke with Morbius director Daniel Espinosa (Snabba Cash, Safe House, Life) about the upcoming Spider-Man spinoff and seemingly spilled the beans about Tom Hardy’s cameo as Eddie Brock/Venom in the movie.

“It usually feels strange before the day begins, when you look at the schedule and stand on the set yourself. When you walk around there, the recording looks just like a Swedish production, but then when you look at the schedule and read names like Michael Keaton, Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, then it feels cool and very exciting.”

However, there have been statements from both Sony Pictures and Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis (See below) that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man won’t be involved in the Venom sequel, despite that Michael Keaton’s Vulture is expected to show up in Morbius (as seen in the trailer).

“Obviously, there are links between Venom and Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and the Spider-Man story, but in this, we’re treating this very much as it’s his own world, the Venom story is his own world. There are nods and little moments just like this, the newspaper Daily Bugle, of course, but on the whole, he’s unaware, they’re unaware, at this point of other characters like Spider-Man. So that’s the way we’ve chosen to play this particular episode of the movie but well, we’ll wait and see, what little things you can pick out of it.”

Multiple projects are in the works at Sony Pictures with J.C. Chandor’s (Triple Frontier) Kraven The Hunter starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director Olivia Wilde’s (Booksmart, Don’t Worry Darling) untitled film (expected to be Spider-Woman) to be the next projects to go into production.

MORBIUS – One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar-winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.

VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE – Tom Hardy returns to the big screen as the lethal protector Venom, one of MARVEL’s greatest and most complex characters. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film also stars Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson, in the role of the villain Cletus Kasady/Carnage.

Sony Pictures Says ‘Morbius’ Isn’t Part Of The MCU After Jared Leto’s Co-Star Tyrese Gibson Mistakenly Said It Was

Yesterday, Comic Book spoke with Fast & Furious franchise actor Tyrese Gibson, as he is on the promotional tour for Universal’s F9. The outlet is known for poking and prodding actors for any kind of tidbit about upcoming comic book films and television shows, along with the exhausting task of asking everyone they interview what superheroes they want to play if they’re not already doing so or grilling them about various internet rumors.

Gibson happens to be playing Simon Stroud in Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, and this led to a misleading comment from the actor declaring the upcoming Jared Leto film was indeed part of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Something that sounded extremely perplexing because Marvel Studios, as far as we know, has zero involvement in projects like Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, and Kraven The Hunter. Sony Pictures had previously made it publicly known that their Spider-Man spinoffs would be part of a cinematic universe adjacent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gibson’s statement was indeed incorrect, as GameSpot reached out to Sony Pictures and the studio confirmed Morbius is still in their own splinter cinematic universe and not part of the MCU.

GameSpot has confirmed that Morbius is still slated to come out on January 28, 2022. Additionally, the movie is not part of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is a part of Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel characters, contrary to what Tyrese Gibson said in the interview below.

We’ll have to chalk it up to Gibson being part of another franchise with spinoffs and just assuming everything Marvel is under the same umbrella. Fans seem to be just as confused as they tend to listen to online theories instead of the studios making the films in question, as mentioned above Sony clarified this months ago.

This comes after Venom: Let Them Be Carnage director Andy Serkis said their film is set in it’s own world and the characters aren’t even aware of Spider-Man. Seemingly confirming that the Venom sequel won’t be part of the MCU either.

The confusion likely stems from Michael Keaton’s Vulture showing up at the end of the film’s trailer, a character that appeared in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, but is ultimately owned by Sony Pictures to do with what they’d like.

Salma Hayek Joins Lady Gaga & Adam Driver In Ridley Scott’s ‘House of Gucci’ – Spotted On Set

Filming on Ridley Scott’s fashion industry thriller House of Gucci has been underway in Italy and there is a news of yet another excellent addition to the film’s cast that already consists of Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto, Jack Huston, and Al Pacino among others.

It will focus on the murder of fashion icon Maurizio Gucci.

The fashion-focused true-crime drama, based on the book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed, will focus on the murder of fashion trailblazer Maurizio Gucci (Driver), with Gaga playing Patrizia Reggiani, Gucci’s ex-wife who was convicted of orchestrating his hit after he had an affair.

The Daily Mail posted set photos from Rome yesterday that revealed actress Salma Hayek is appearing in House of Gucci. It’s been confirmed Hayek will be playing Pina Auriemma in the film, the clairvoyant friend of Gaga’s Patrizia.

Hayek recently filmed Marvel’s Eternals directed by Oscar nominated director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland) that will release on November 5, 2021.

MGM has given House of Gucci an release date of November 24, 2021. The fall spot should allow the Ridley Scott film a prime spot for awards considerations as there is an expectation it could a contender at next year’s Oscar ceremonies given the subject matter and fantastic cast.

WarnerMedia’s Ann Sarnoff Says They Won’t Be Developing The Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’

DC Comics and Zack Snyder fans seemed to rejoice last week with Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally being released on HBO Max, the 4-hour juggernaut’s release seemed to give the impression to fans that there was a shot that David Ayer’s original cut of Suicide Squad referred to by fans as The Ayer Cut could see the light of day.

WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff seemed to dispel rumors The Ayer Cut was being worked on or even on the table in the future during an in-depth interview with Variety that was published yesterday. Ann was pretty blunt about The Ayer Cut when asked if they would be releasing that version of the film, stating the following.

SARNOFF: “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.”

David Ayer had suggested the original version had a lot more of Jared Leto’s Joker and there had been some drastic editing involved with the final theatrical version. But it doesn’t look like that version aka The Ayer Cut is going to be released on HBO Max or anywhere else anytime soon.

The franchise is chugging along without David Ayer as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6th.

‘Adrift’: Jared Leto & Darren Aronofsky Reuniting For Ghost Ship Movie – Based On Short Story From The Author of ‘The Ring’

Jared Leto and director Darren Aronofsky haven’t worked together since Requiem For A Dream, but that is all changing according to a new report from Deadline. The outlet reveals the two will be reteaming for a horror flick titled Adrift with Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions producing.

The project is based on a short story from Koji Suzuki‘s Dark Water, the author of the Japanese horror classic The Ring that was turned into multiple feature films in Japan and the United States.

The story is set in the dead calm of the open sea, where a fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. A deckhand agrees to take lone control of it while it’s towed into port, but soon he discovers why the rest of his more experienced crew members call it a “Ghost Ship.”

Darren will be a little busy as he’s about to begin shooting his drama Whale with Brendan Fraser in March.

Leto’s next films to be released will be the crime thriller The Little Things starring opposite Denzel Washington that has been getting some buzz and the Spider-Man spinoff Morbius that was recently delayed to January 2022.

THE LITTLE THINGS – Deputy Sheriff Joe “Deke” Deacon joins forces with Sgt. Jim Baxter to search for a serial killer who’s terrorizing Los Angeles. As they track the culprit, Baxter is unaware that the investigation is dredging up echoes of Deke’s past, uncovering disturbing secrets that could threaten more than his case.

Rundown of 2021 Movies That Have Been Given New Release Dates

No Time To Die wasn’t the only studio film to get a bump to later in the year as there were a wave of release changes yesterday. The COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t seem to be letting up over the spring or possibly the summer meaning that theatrical releases are going to be further delayed.

Here is a rundown of those releases changes that took place over the week.

  • Godzilla vs. Kong – March 26th, 2021 (moved up)
  • Nobody – April 2nd, 2021
  • BIOS – August 13th, 2021
  • The Many Saints of Newark – September 24th, 2021
  • No Time To Die – October 8th, 2021
  • Last Night In Soho – October 22nd, 2021
  • Antlers – October 29th, 2021
  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife – November 11th, 2021
  • Nightmare Alley – December 3rd, 2021
  • Morbius – January 21st, 2022
  • Uncharted – February 11th, 2022
  • Ambulance – February 18th, 2022

We’re likely to get more release date changes in the coming weeks as summer movies alongside other spring films might be getting pushed later in the year or to 2022. I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if we saw new dates for films such big films as Black Widow, Shang-Chi & The Legend of The Ten Rings, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Spider-Man 3, F9, The King’s Man, Top Gun: Maverick, Jungle Cruise and others.

I know people are going to assume that studios will simply throw these projects on streaming services, however, considering the large budgets involved they will be more interested in turning a profit than offloading the films from their slates, they are still businesses that need to generate revenue. Until we get those official announcements it seems a little premature to speculate which projects will end up on streaming as plenty of these releases escaped that fate in 2020 and might continue that in 2021.

I personally believe the best way to go is with reasonable prices for multiple digital renting and buying options along with great access to those choices. Having access to these films suck behind a paywall then given high price of $30 like with what Disney did with Mulan meant that Disney+ subscribers still had to pay a premium price alongside their monthly subscription. At the very least, they should have given a discount to subs asking for $10-20.

We’ll certainly update when further changes are announced.

‘Blade Runner’: Jared Leto Still Wants To Reprise Villain Niander Wallace For A Prequel Project

Back in July, Jared Leto mentioned a desire to explore Niander Wallace‘s origin when interacting with a fan. Wallace was the puppet-master villain of Blade Runnder 2049 and runs the company that has taken over Replicant production from the Tyrell Corporation.

LETO: “Maybe we can do a Niander Wallace origin story one day. Would be interesting to see where this mad man came from. He must have had some history. I have some ideas…”

Jared is still very much interested in returning to Wallace while speaking with Jake’s Takes (spotted by The Playlist) this month.

LETO: “You know, with every character I play, I don’t know if it’s because I work so intently and I tend to dig really deep and put a lot of time and energy into it, but when I’m done playing with them, done playing the parts, I do miss them a little bit. And you do all this work anyway, it would be kind of nice to go back and explore other [characters]. Like Niander Wallace in Blade Runner, I would love to play that part again as a prequel or something.”

Wallace’s fate is unknown at the end of the film has he zipped off-world in a ship to one of the many human colonies. It could be interesting to see if he had a hand in those colonies and potentially the off-world wars that have been referenced in both movies.

Leto isn’t the only mulling over the idea of a return to the Blade Runner Universe, as director Denis Villeneuve told Empire last year he’d like to make a non-sequel that is disconnected to the first two movies.

VILLENEUVE: “It’s such an inspiring place, the Blade Runner world. The problem is have is the word ‘sequel’. I think cinema needs original stories. But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future… I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.”

The only official continuation of the franchise that has been in the works is an anime project for Crunchyroll and Adult Swim titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus with a debut sometime in 2021.

‘Morbius’: Sony Officially Delays ‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff’s Release To Early October

Today, Sony Pictures has announced they’ve again moved the release date of their upcoming Spider-Man spinoff feature film Morbius, starring Oscar-winner Jared Leto as Doctor Michael Morbius, a scientist that accidentally turns himself into a vampire.

The release date has been moved to October 8th after being set for March 19th previously.

It’s first teaser trailer revealed the interconnection with the solo Spider-Man films made by Marvel Studios as it featured Michael Keaton‘s Vulture in some sort of jailbreak scene. This has given fans hope that the character will indeed within the Marvel Cinematic Universe or at the very least, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man.

There is also an expectation that J.K. Simmon’s J. Jonah Jameson from Spider-Man: Far From Home will show up too thanks to previous comments made by the actor.

MORBIUS – One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be a radical success, a darkness inside him is unleashed and transforms this healer into a hunter.
