Jake Gyllenhaal In Negotiations To Join The Next Guy Ritchie Movie That Begins Shooting By End Of 2021

Director Guy Ritchie post-Aladdin has been hyper-focusing on a bunch of his own movies at Miramax, despite being loosely attached to helm an Aladdin sequel for Disney, he’s been spending more time putting together his own projects to avoid having to do the sequel.

His recent run includes the release of the Matthew McConaughey gangster pic The Gentlemen (being developed into a television series) and Jason Statham’s armored truck thriller Wrath of Man (a remake of the 2004 French film Le Convoyeur). Ritchie recently wrapped on a big globetrotting spy project, Operation Fortune (previously called Five Eyes), that stars folks such as Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Hartnett, and Hugh Grant.

Deadline reports of a mysterious new film from Guy Ritchie at Miramax that will begin before the end of the year with American actor Jake Gyllenhaal in negotiations to take a lead role.

A title and plot details are unknown but given that casting is ramping up we’ll likely learn concrete information soon.

It’s a shocking development given that Ritchie had been developing a World War II action drama for Paramount Pictures, based on the novel The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare by Damien Lewis. Focusing on the first unit of British black ops commandos.

Previous drafts of the script were penned by Arash Amel, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson.

When France fell to the Nazis in 1940, Churchill declared that Britain would resist the advance of the German army–alone if necessary. Churchill commanded the Special Operations Executive to secretly develop of a very special kind of military unit that would operate on their own initiative deep behind enemy lines. The units would be licensed to kill, fully deniable by the British government, and a ruthless force to meet the advancing Germans. The very first of these “butcher-and-bolt” units–the innocuously named Maid Honour Force–was led by Gus March-Phillipps, a wild British eccentric of high birth, and an aristocratic, handsome, and bloodthirsty young Danish warrior, Anders Lassen. Amped up on amphetamines, these assorted renegades and sociopaths undertook the very first of Churchill’s special operations–a top-secret, high-stakes mission to seize Nazi shipping in the far-distant port of Fernando Po, in West Africa.

Jake Gyllenhaal has been lining up a wave of genre pics including the war drama Combat Control and Image Comics movie Prophet with Extraction director Sam Hargrave involved with both projects. He’s also attached to star alongside actress Jessica Chastain in Netflix’s film adaptation of the video game The Division with Rawson Marshall Thurber (replacing David Leitch) directing, the graphic novel thriller Snow Blind from director Gustav Möller (The Guilty), and sci-fi film based on the Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) comic Oblivion Song.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre will officially hit theaters on January 21 and a trailer is likely coming within weeks.

‘Prophet’: Jake Gyllenhaal & Sam Hargrave Team For Film Based On Image Comics Superhero With Nazi Origins

A movie based on Image Comics character Prophet has been in the works for a while at Studio 8 with Marc Guggenheim assigned to write the film’s script. There is now a big update as the project inches closer to getting made.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that actor Jake Gyllenhaal and Extraction director Sam Hargrave had jumped on board with Jake playing John Prophet. The two were previously attached to the war flick Combat Control.

Prophet is a product of Nazi experiments during the end of WWII, which is said to be still part of the film’s plot.

In the film, John Prophet volunteers for a German experiment near the end of World War II in order to feed his family. After a bombing buries him alive and traps him underground for 20 years, he reawakens in 1965, where things are not great for Prophet. The world has moved on without him, his daughter resents him, and KGB agents are after him to create super-soldiers from his blood.

Gyllenhaal is no stronger to comic book projects after appearing in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio and is attached to a movie adaptation of the Robert Kirkman sci-fi comic book Oblivion Song.

Hargrave is currently busy on the Netflix sequel Extraction 2 starring Marvel Studios alumni Chris Hemsworth. He’s also got strong genre credits working as second unit director on Season 2 of The Mandalorian and multiple MCU movies.

Having a writer, lead actor, and director is a good sign but it’s unclear when they ultimately want to get cameras rolling.

‘Oblivion Song’: Jake Gyllenhaal To Lead Feature Adaptation Of Robert Kirkman’s Dimension-Hopping Comic Book

Another Robert Kirkman (Invincible, The Walking Dead) property is being developed as a live-action project, as his sci-fi comic book Oblivion Song had it’s film rights secured by New Republic Pictures, after previous involvement from Universal Pictures.

The Hollywood Reporter brings us the news and adds that Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, Prisoners) will both star and produce the movie based on the comic published by Image Comics.

The comic — which Kirkman created with artist Lorenzo De Felici in 2018 — takes place a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in a cataclysmic event named Oblivion. The government made every attempt to recover them, but after many years they gave up. But protagonist Nathan Cole hasn’t, making daily trips to find those lost.

Gyllenhaal’s most recent films include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja, Velvet Buzzsaw with upcoming releases such as Michael Bay’s Ambulance and Antoine Fuqua’s thriller The Guilty. Other projects on the horizon include the survival drama Suddenly alongside Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Hobbs & Shaw, The Crown), the Navy SEAL action flick Combat Control, and the video game film The Division that will co-star Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) at Netflix.

Kirkman’s The Walking Dead franchise and Invincible are also poised to also get feature films. He was recently involved with Chris McKay’s Universal Monsters pic Renfield starring Nicholas Hoult helping craft it’s story.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Vanessa Kirby To Play A Couple In The Survival Thriller ‘Suddenly’ From ‘Rust & Bone’ Screenwriter

Another interesting project has come up at the Cannes Film Market this week as Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) and Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of A Woman) are attached to play a couple in a new Studiocanal thriller from Rust & Bone screenwriter Thomas Bidegain, according to Deadline. The project is based on the novel Soudain Seuls by French author Isabelle Autissier and will focus on a couple that is stranded on an island. Suddenly sounds like it could be a solid character-focused film for the acting duo.

A couple who becomes stranded on an island in the South Atlantic and must fight for survival when their dream journey becomes a nightmare.

Bidegain was previously behind the French gangster film A Prophet and wrote on the Gyllenhaal’s The Sister Brothers.

Gyllenhaal has been busy lately completing production on Michael Bay’s Ambulance, leading the Antoine Fuqua-directed 911 dispatch thriller The Guilty, and is still attached to co-star with Jessica Chastain in a feature film adaptation of the video game The Division for Netflix with Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber recently replacing David Leitch (Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, John Wick). It’s unknown if we’ll see Jake Gyllenhaal return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Quentin Beck as he died in Spider-Man: Far From Home and his death is being used to frame Peter Parker for murder, it’s possible the death was staged but we’ll have to watch Spider-Man: No Way Home to know for sure.

Kirby has been getting praise for her dramatic work in Pieces of A Woman and The World To Come. She’s been recently shooting the high-octane action sequel Mission: Impossible 7 for writer/director Christopher McQuarrie during the pandemic and is expected to return for Mission: Impossible 8 as well. There is an assumption that Vanessa Kirby could reprise the Hattie Shaw role in a potential sequel to Hobbs & Shaw, when/if Universal Pictures decides to announce those plans officially.

RUST & BONE – Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts), a former boxer and single father, meets Stephanie (Marion Cotillard) when he saves her from a brawl at the nightclub where he works as a bouncer. Their casual acquaintance develops into something much more after Stephanie, who trains killer whales at a marine park, suffers a horrible accident and loses both her legs above the knee. As Stephanie draws on Ali’s physical strength, an unexpected courtship slowly comes to life.

‘The Division’: ‘Red Notice’ Director Rawson Marshall Thurber Replaces David Leitch On Netflix Video Game Movie

Deadline has word that David Lietch has been replaced as director on Netflix’s feature film adaptation of the video game Tom Clancy’s The Division. They’ve pivoted to director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who recently wrapped the high-budgeted heist flick Red Notice that stars Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds.

Marshall will co-write The Division’s script with Ellen Shanman.

The story is set in the near future with a virus spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the city of New York and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.

Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal are still set to star/produce the film.

Leitch is apparently too busy to tackle the film as he’s deep into production on Sony’s assassin flick Bullet Train starring Oscar-winner Brad Pitt. However, he’ll stay on as producer via 87North Productions.

It’s unknown when filming is going to start.

The Ubisoft video game has been reasonably successful with two installments released.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Swedish Director Gustav Möller Team For Graphic Novel Adaptation ‘Snow Blind’

Deadline is reporting that actor Jake Gyllenhaal and director Gustav Möller (The Guilty) are putting a package together for a new thriller with BOOM! Studios producing. The script written by Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls) is an adaptation of the original graphic novel from Ollie Masters. It’s being pitched as being “Prisoners meets Running On Empty”.

Here is a synopsis for the graphic novel.

SNOW BLIND – For high school student Teddy, life in a sleepy suburb in Alaska turns upside down when he innocently posts a photo of his dad online, only to learn he and his family are in the Witness Protection Program. A man seeking revenge invades their town, and soon FBI agents arrive too. But what if his parent’s reasons for going into the program aren’t as innocent as they say?

They are expecting a deal to be announced soon.

BOOM! Studios had recently set an expansive deal with Netflix for multiple films and television projects based on their comic book properties, so I wouldn’t be shocked if Snow Blind ended up landing on the streaming service.

Jake has been involved with some very interesting thrillers over his career with David Fincher’s Zodiac, Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, and Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler. He certainly fits well within that genre and we’ll be excited to see what the final results of the adaptation.
