‘Avengelyne’: Olivia Wilde To Direct Margot Robbie In Comic Book Flick Penned By ‘Poor Things’ Screenwriter At WB

Margot Robbie, LuckyChap, and Warner Bros. are continuing their working relationship after “Barbie” became the biggest film at the global box office in 2023 (earning a massive $1.4 billion). A report from Deadline has revealed the studio has scooped up a new superhero hero package that will see Robbie star in a feature film adaptation of the Rob Liefeld (co-creator of “Deadpool”) comic book, “Avengelyne.” Published by Image Comics, the comic focuses on an angel who fights the forces of evil.

The surprising aspect is the impressive creative team assembled for the film, which is director Olivia Wilde (“Book Smart”) and Aussie screenwriter Tony McNamara (“The Favourite,” “The Great”), the latter coming off the Oscar-winning movie “Poor Things.”

Here is how the outlet describes the property in their report, which sounds like a combination of Mike Mignola’s “Hellboy” meets former “Spawn” heroine Angela (now an Asgardian and ruler of Hel in Marvel Comics):

Avengelyne is an angel who fights the forces of evil and often finds herself face-to-face with demons and monsters. She was the most feared warrior in heaven’s Warhost, having single-handedly broken into Pandemonium, the outer fortress of hell, to confront the devil himself. She is a fallen angel, banished from heaven by God after being tricked into questioning his love for humans. Avengelyne was stripped of all her angelic abilities, other than her great strength and her blood, which, once extracted from her body, could be used as a weapon or a miracle when it is empowered by quoting verses from the Bible. Avengelyne uses her powers to fight demons on Earth and is being groomed to be humankind’s last hope in a coming Armageddon.

McNamara is a screenwriter known for biting wit and comedic timing, making him just the right kind of creative to help potentially overhaul a property that could be reworked for a global audience.

Robbie isn’t a stranger to the comic book genre after playing the DC Comics villain/antihero Harley Quinn in two “Suicide Squad” movies from directors David Ayer and James Gunn alongside a spinoff with “Birds of Prey” that was helmed by Cathy Yan. Her future as the character doesn’t seem all that concrete with various resets of the DCU from DC Studios, and Gunn has yet to announce a fourth project with Robbie back in the Quinn role. LuckyChap and Robbie have also been trying to get a remake of “Tank Girl” (created by Gorillaz co-founder/artist Jamie Hewlett) going with director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte, but there hasn’t been any word of what stage that is currently in.

Wilde has been itching to get into the superhero genre for years now as the filmmaker was once attached to direct a Marvel Comics project in 2020 that had been referred to in reports as “Spider-Woman” for Sony Pictures. However, there really hasn’t been an update since that project was first announced, and Marvel Studios’ participation was never made official.

This isn’t the first time Liefeld has attempted to get his lesser-known comic book characters into films and television. There was a time when Netflix was looking to flesh out the Liefeld properties like the “Extreme Universe,” until that deal, first announced in 2018, went up in smoke. That deal included the rights to Brigade, Bloodstrike, Lethal, Cybrid, and Kaboom. Things might have gone south potentially, we speculate, after the streamer had buyer’s remorse about acquiring the Millarworld (Mark Millar’s comic book material) source material when their expensive series adaptation of “Jupiter’s Legacy” failed to secure an audience ending its run at one season.

‘Prophet’: Jake Gyllenhaal & Sam Hargrave Team For Film Based On Image Comics Superhero With Nazi Origins

A movie based on Image Comics character Prophet has been in the works for a while at Studio 8 with Marc Guggenheim assigned to write the film’s script. There is now a big update as the project inches closer to getting made.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that actor Jake Gyllenhaal and Extraction director Sam Hargrave had jumped on board with Jake playing John Prophet. The two were previously attached to the war flick Combat Control.

Prophet is a product of Nazi experiments during the end of WWII, which is said to be still part of the film’s plot.

In the film, John Prophet volunteers for a German experiment near the end of World War II in order to feed his family. After a bombing buries him alive and traps him underground for 20 years, he reawakens in 1965, where things are not great for Prophet. The world has moved on without him, his daughter resents him, and KGB agents are after him to create super-soldiers from his blood.

Gyllenhaal is no stronger to comic book projects after appearing in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Quentin Beck aka Mysterio and is attached to a movie adaptation of the Robert Kirkman sci-fi comic book Oblivion Song.

Hargrave is currently busy on the Netflix sequel Extraction 2 starring Marvel Studios alumni Chris Hemsworth. He’s also got strong genre credits working as second unit director on Season 2 of The Mandalorian and multiple MCU movies.

Having a writer, lead actor, and director is a good sign but it’s unclear when they ultimately want to get cameras rolling.

‘Spawn’ Remake Getting Rewrites From ‘Broken City’ Screenwriter Brian Tucker

Despite almost going into production a while back, it looks like Blumhouse has hired a new screenwriter to help with rewrites on the their Spawn remake. Image Comics’ Todd McFarlane created the comic book character after leaving Marvel Comics to form his own creative-driven comic book company. McFarlane is also set to direct the mature comic book film and wrote the original draft of Spawn’s script.

Spawn is centered on a black-ops agent, Al Simmons, who is betrayed and murdered and his soul sent to hell for all the innocents he killed. While there, he makes a deal with a demon who allows him to return to the earthly plane and his wife. However, five years have now passed, and his wife has moved on, while he is a disfigured and superpowered spawn of hell.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the studio has assigned Brian Tucker (Broken City) to do rewrites on the script, however, the extent of the reworking isn’t clear. Tucker is also working on The Fugitive remake for Warner Bros. that was announced a while back.

It sounds like they’ve been having trouble getting the film financed and hopefully some rewrites will get things in motion. McFarlane’s original pitch for the remake sounded so off-case that it sort of didn’t even sound like a Spawn movie anymore. As a fan, I kind of wish they’d look to the HBO animated series for inspiration instead of trying to make a low-budget horror film using the Spawn brand to get money for it.

Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx (Miami Vice, Baby Driver, Project Power) had been originally attached to play Al Simmons/Spawn and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker, Wind River) was going to play Detective Twitch before the project stalled multiple times. It’s unknown if the pair of actors will be coaxed back to return at this point or if the studio will look at finding replacements.

Foxx recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe by reprising his role of Electro in Spider-Man: No Way Home coming out on December 17 and Renner’s Disney+ series Hawkeye will debt on November 24.

Adam Wingard & Robert Kirkman Team For Universal’s Feature Film Adaptation of Sci-Fi Comic Book ‘Hardcore’

Director Adam Wingard’s profile has risen thanks to the box office success of Godzilla Vs. Kong, the crossover film set in Legendary’s Monsterverse has become the biggest box office earner since the pandemic began as it crossed $400 million globally and is inching towards reaching $100 million domestically.

Another genre project has arrived.

Universal is also trying to get on team Wingard as there are reports via The Hollywood Reporter that the filmmaker will co-write and direct a feature film based on the comic book Hardcore with co-creator Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead, Invincible) writing the film’s story and producing. The script will be worked on by Wingard and Will Simmon, which is based on the comic created by Kirkman and Marc Marc Silvestri.

The Hardcore Program can turn anyone—your neighbor, your co-worker, your spouse—into a human drone to get to targets normal soldiers can’t. Agent Drake is the best soldier Hardcore has to offer, until he’s stranded in a body with only 72 hours to discover who’s hijacked the Program. But who can he trust when his enemy can change their appearance as easily as you change your shirt?

It’s unknown where Hardcore lands on the project pecking order as Adam Wingard has other movies he’s attached to. The filmmaker has since been reportedly linked to another Monsterverse film, possibly Son of Kong, and is making a hybrid animated/CGI feature film for Warner Bros. based on the cult hit cartoon ThunderCats.

Regina King To Direct Monster Movie ‘Bitter Root’ For Legendary & Producer Ryan Coogler – Based On Image Comics Property

It doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing Regina King direct Blade, The Vampire Hunter or the new black Superman film that is being developed by Warner Bros./Bad Robot, she’s decided another comic book project altogether.

After directing the Oscar-nominated film, One Night In Miami, she’s landed a high-profile feature adaptation of the Image Comics property Bitter Root for Legendary and producer Ryan Coogler. The news comes from The Hollywood Reporter and sounds a little similar to Lovecraft Country.

Bitter Root is set in 1924 during the Harlem Renaissance and tells of the Sangeryes, a family of once-great monster hunters, who face an evil that descends upon New York.

Screenwriter Bryan Edward Hill (Power Rangers) is behind the film’s script.

It’s unknown when Legendary wants Bitter Root to begin shooting but this likely means she could be too busy to tackle films for Marvel Studios or DC Films at this time. Allowing other names floated by trades to tackle Blade and Superman as it looks like the two projects are eyeing a production start in 2022.

Ryan Coogler is about to begin shooting on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever this July with a spinoff series for Disney+ also in the works.

‘No Time To Die’ Director Cary Joji Fukunaga Tackling Cyberpunk With ‘Tokyo Ghost’ Movie For Legendary

Director Cary Joji Fukunaga has joined the world of massive studio blockbusters with the upcoming James Bond release No Time To Die, the final film of the Daniel Craig era and the studio now looks to find a new actor. The filmmakers seemingly itching to tackle more genre IP as he’s set to direct a feature film adaptation of an Image Comics property.

Yesterday, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Legendary Entertainment has tapped Fukunaga to tackle a film based on their cyberpunk comic Tokyo Ghost.

Tokyo Ghost is set in 2089 when humanity has become fully addicted to technology as an escape from reality. The story follows peacekeepers Debbie Decay and Led Dent, who are working in the Isles of Los Angeles and are given a job that will take them to the last tech-free country on Earth: the garden nation of Tokyo.

The comic’s writer Rick Remender (Deadly Class, Fear Agent) will be writing the script.

Western cyberpunk films such as The Matrix, RoboCop, Blade Runner/Blade Runner 2049, Upgrade, and Total Recall have had varying levels of success. However, there has been a bit of hiccup with Hollywood attempts to adapt Japanese entries such as the Scarlett Johansson box office flop Ghost In The Shell and Warner Bros. has spent almost twenty years trying to make a movie based on the manga Akira.

Tokyo Ghost being from an western comic book might have an easier time being translated to the big screen. Audiences are also newly aware of the genre thanks to the recent video game Cyberpunk 2077. It’ll be interesting to see how they tackle this adaptation visually as the artwork from the comic would be certainly jarring to general film audiences.

Cary is also set to direct episodes of the Apple TV+ series Masters of The Air, the WWII project is produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Considered to be a follow-up to their previous shows Band of Brothers and The Pacific as HBO passed and Apple grabbed it.

No Time To Die will be released in October.
