‘Alien: Earth’ Streaming Next Summer, Series Spinoff Is Set Two Years Before Original ‘Alien’

Most recently, we finally got some new footage from Noah Hawley‘s (“Fargo,” “Legion”) “Alien” series spinoff “Alien: Earth” from a Disney+ promotional video from earlier in the month, and a “new teaser” from this week has confirmed a summer 2025 debut on Hulu and Disney+. Sadly, this teaser (See below) doesn’t exactly include any new footage, just the previous look at a xenomorph we got over the summer.

If you weren’t already aware, the show’s cast includes Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Timothy Olyphant, Essie Davis, Samuel Blenkin, Babou Ceesay, David Rysdahl, Adrian Edmondson, Adarsh Gourav, Jonathan Ajayi, Erana James, Lily Newmark, Diem Camille, and Moe Bar-El.

Olyphant is reportedly playing a new android in the show, and we’re still trying to figure out if the show is indeed going to be regarded as hard canon like “Alien: Romulus” or simply a standalone project that won’t impact past or future stories.

From a timeline perspective, “Alien: Earth” takes place in 2120, which directly places it two years before the events of the original “Alien” by Ridley Scott and set much after his more recent prequels, “Prometheus” (27 years) and “Alien: Covenant” (16 years).

“Alien: Romulus” took place between “Alien” and “Aliens,” adding brand new characters and establishing that Weyland-Yutanti tinkered with the Big Chap and had a cloning program before Carter Burke doomed the colonists of Hadley’s Hope or the cloning plot of “Alien: Resurrection.” Until we get official confirmation from Hawley, there is wiggle room for them to retroactively add these new show events to the main franchise timeline in the same way without retconning anything in a major way (Neill Blomkamp’s never-made “Alien 5” would have retconned the films after “Aliens” and explored the company’s experiments with the xenomorphs including bio-suits).

In theory, xenomorphs could have overrun a city or island on Earth only to be nuked into dust and covered up by the company to hide active weapons programs using alien bio-technology. This would explain this hint of previous knowledge of the xenomorphs from Ash and Carter Burke, an established database on them from the occurences of “Alien: Earth” or previous attempts to experiment even before “Romulus.”

“When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman (Sydney Chandler) and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat in FX’s highly anticipated TV series ‘Alien: Earth’ from creator Noah Hawley.“

Elsewhere in the franchise, writer/director Fede Alvarez is said to be developing a follow-up sequel to “Alien: Romulus” (Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are confirmed to reprise their roles) potentially with Ridley Scott (had once been developing a third David-centric prequel called “Alien: Awakening“) returning as producer via Scott Free, and the next live-action “Predator” film “Predator: Badlands” is set to hit the big screen next November. There is some hope that with the two film franchises now being set in the distant future and off-world, 20th Century Studios could eventually attempt an organic and authentic new adaptation of “Alien vs Predator.” By ignoring the previous two films and giving fans something closer to what the original comic books and video games were doing with the crossover.

Time will tell if The Colonial Marines (who haven’t officially appeared since James Cameron’s “Aliens”) will be the third splinter group to their own series or spinoff before an off-world clash between the two deadly alien species.

While “Prey” was a Hulu-exclusive film, “Alien: Romulus” was gifted a traditional theatrical release and earned an impressive $350.8 million for the studio at the worldwide box office. Making it the second highest-grossing installment. “Romulus” has proved there is still gas left in the tank despite mixed reactions to Ridley’s two prequels. We’re curious to see how “Alien: Earth” impacts things next summer and what new ideas Halwey has cooked up beyond expanding on the company trying to weaponize the xenomorph (an over-arching theme of the franchise and briefly touched upon in “Alien: Romulus” and “Alien: Resurrection” via cloning technology.

Dan Trachtenberg Directed Secret ‘Predator’ Movie Coming Out Before The ‘Predator: Badlands’ Release In November 2025

After the high praise and positive audience reaction to Dan Trachtenberg‘s “Prey,” a period film set within the greater “Predator” franchise, 20th Century Studios and Disney pushed forward with a second film titled “Predator: Badlands“ starring Elle Fanning (now confirmed) in the main role after having such success with Amber Midthunder leading the last installment. However, there is actually even more coming. Steve Asbell of 20th Century Studios recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that the filmmaker has directed TWO “Predator” movies, not just one installment.

“I’ll tell you very simply. After ‘Prey’ became a success, Dan [Trachtenberg] came back and said he didn’t want to do ‘Prey 2.’ And we’re like, “What do you want to do?” And he rattled off a bunch of ideas that were really crazy but really cool. We’ve actually done two of them. Two are coming out next year. One I can’t talk about yet, but the other one is the live-action ‘Predator‘ film with Elle Fanning that just wrapped in New Zealand. That’ll be out theatrically sometime next year,” Asbell told THR in a one-on-one interview about the future of the studio’s big franchises.

He added, “There’s a secret Predator movie that will come out before the theatrical one, but I can’t say anything about it yet.”

I think we can infer from these quotes that this “secret” film is likely heading to Hulu since Asbell is quite specific about “Yes, a ‘Predator’ movie will have a theatrical [release].” This doesn’t exactly suggest this second project coming out before “Predator: Badlands” will be in theaters, too. Then again, you have to assume that Hulu and Disney were hellbent on getting another “Predator” property on the platform alongside the upcoming “Alien: Earth” series from Noah Hawley.

“Predator: Badlands” already has an official theatrical release date of November 7, 2025, and would be the first film from the franchise to grace the big screen since Shane Black’s long-forgotten attempt, “The Predator.” Again, we shouldn’t be surprised if this other movie ends up being a Hulu exclusive release.

‘Shōgun’ Star/Producer Hiroyuki Sanada Cites Talented & Collaborative International Crew For Cultural Authenticity In FX’s Epic New Samurai Series: “It Was Like A Dream Team For Me”

This week saw the debut of the FX series remake of ‘Shōgun‘ and one of the key aspects of the show’s growing buzz is easily the painstaking detail that has gone into the show’s depiction of 1600s Japan. After watching the episodes they released, it’s extremely clear that everyone on the show is aiming to do something we don’t see very often when it comes to Hollywood productions, showcasing Japanese culture in both a respectful and authentic way to a Western audience. The costumes, production design, props, and sets are all worthy of Emmy nominations before the rest of the show has been fully shown in its entirety. Giving such a loving touch to a Western samurai production that really hasn’t been done on this scale since the original version of the show from 1980 (“The Last Samurai” and “Silence” being excellent attempts in their own right).

During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes (See below), the show’s producer and star Hiroyuki Sanada, who plays Lord Yoshii Toranaga (A role previously played by the iconic Toshiro Mifune) in the samurai series, explains how they were able to achieve such authenticity with the show despite shooting primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. And it all comes down to having access to talented Japanese department heads and crew members that were able to work side-by-side with the local Canadian crew calling the collaborative effort his “dream team.”

“We tried to make it authentic as much as possible because it’s very important to introduce our culture to the world correctly. So, this time we could hire a Japanese crew, experts for the samurai drama for each department. Wigs, props, costume, master of gesture, and we had a great team. A great collaboration between Western crew and Japanese crew working together. It was like a dream team for me. And I really enjoy.”

Having Japanese producers, a showrunner/creator, cast, writers, department heads, and crew members seemingly have all contributed to this stunning example of how samurai projects should be handled by Hollywood on the big and small screen alike moving forward. It’s worth noting that in Japan, it’s extremely common in both the film and television industry to work on multiple projects focused on samurai, so it was only a logical choice to make sure to use these veteran Japanese artisans as a resource on the ‘Shōgun’ revival.

Speaking of Rotten Tomatoes, “Shōgun” holds a 100% critic rating and 95% audience rating on the aggregator and speaks to the quality of the series. The public has only had access to the first two episodes with more coming each subsequent Tuesday until all 10 episodes have aired. The show can be watched on Hulu in the United States and is considered a Star Original on the Disney+ app in other regions such as Canada, The United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia.

Based on James Clavell’s novel, FX’s Shōgun is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him, when a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village.

‘Shōgun’ Trailer: New Red-Band Trailer For FX’s Ambitious Mature Samurai Series Debuting On Hulu & Disney+ This February

Yesterday, FX released a new trailer for their remake of the samurai drama series ‘Shōgun‘ that showcases the mature nature of the remake of the 1980s network incarnation that skews more violent and will feature sex scenes. A sign this show, debuting February 27 on Hulu,, will be a much more accurate take of the era of Shogunate, the brutal rulers of Japan.

In various regions like United Kingdom and Canada, that don’t have access to Hulu, the series will be available for Disney+ subscribers.

FX’s Shōgun, an original adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel, is set in Japan in the year 1600 at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. Producer Hiroyuki Sanada stars as “Lord Yoshii Toranaga” who is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, “John Blackthorne” (Cosmo Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, “Toda Mariko” (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.

‘Alien’ Series: Timothy Olyphant Reportedly Playing An Android In New Earthbound Show From Noah Hawley

As production on the new “Alien” series is expected to resume in the new year according to creator/showrunner/director Noah Hawley, a big casting addition has been revealed by Deadline. The outlet reports that veteran actor Timothy Olyphant (“Justified”) has joined the sci-fi horror series that had been shooting in Thailand and is said to be playing an android character. Synthetic characters in the “Alien” franchise have been both friends (Walter, Bishop, Call) and foes (Ash, David) to our human leads.

Olyphant and Hawley previously worked together on the fourth season of “Fargo.”

The rest of the cast consists of Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Adarsh Gourav, and Kit Young.

While we’re waiting on more concrete plot details the show is expected to take place in the events of the original “Alien” from 1979 and specifically is set on Earth, the first installment of the main franchise to do so. Outside of Paris scenes in “Alien Resurrection” and the opening of “Prometheus.” There is an expectation it will focus on the greedy and evil corporation Weyland Industries/Weyland-Yutani, who act as the secondary antagonists that throw various expendable crew members into the meat grinder in an attempt to secure the Xenomorph for their biological weapons program.

Meanwhile, on the film front, we’re expected to have “Alien: Romulus” by director Fede Alvarez released on August 16, 2024. That pic is said to be focused on a young group of off-world colonists that are forced to confront the Xenomorph/Xenomorphs.

‘Alien: Romulus’ Enlists Cinematographer Galo Olivares For Latest Installment In The Sci-Fi Horror Franchise

The Ronin can confirm that the upcoming Alien movie from filmmaker Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, The Girl In The Spider’s Web) has hired cinematographer Galo Olivares for the next installment of the franchise. It’s been reported that actress Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising) in the lead role, although, further details have been scarce or where in the Alien timeline the pic will take place or if we’ll be seeing any established characters show up.

Olivares previously worked on Gretel & Hansel along with being part of the camera team on the Oscar-winning drama Roma from Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón.

This next Alien film will certainly be an interesting experiment for 20th Century Studios, as it’ll be the first film in the franchise specifically being made as streaming exclusive for Hulu (not unlike Prey). We’ll keep our fingers crossed that Disney/20th Century will have the common sense to actually give the project a theatrical run, even if it’s only a couple of weeks.

UPDATE: Apparently, listed on IMDB the film’s production designer is said to be Naaman Marshall (Mortal Kombat, Knock At The Cabin), who previously worked on the sci-fi horror film Underwater (See trailer below) starring Kristen Stewart that seemingly took direct inspiration from films like Alien and Leviathan. However, we’re unable to confirm this new tidbit but certainly exciting as Marshall’s work on Underwater was stunning. This wouldn’t be the first time working with Álvarez as Marshall was the production designer on 2016’s Don’t Breathe, which shares the same screenwriters of Romulus.

Álvarez helming the film was a bit of surprise given that current franchise producer Ridley Scott has long been trying to get a third prequel film, Alien: Awakening, off the ground as a follow-up to Alien: Covenant. At the end of that film, we saw David (Michael Fassbender) now in control of the ship along with the colonists that could be used for his xenomorph experiments. Daniels (Katherine Waterston) and Tennessee (Danny McBride) had survived their horrific ordeal as they’ve been placed back into hyper-sleep. However, it remains to be seen if we’ll ever see that third project come to fruition as Scott is getting ready to shoot his Gladiator sequel starring Oscar-nominated actor Paul Mescal (Aftersun) over the summer and will likely have more film projects to focus on beyond that as the filmmaker is very busy.

We’re still waiting on more casting information for the film alongside when we’re expected to see Alien: Romulus drop on Hulu.

Keanu Reeves In Talks To Join Martin Scorsese’s Period Serial Killer Series ‘The Devil In The White City’

A decade ago, a feature film adaptation of the Erik Larson book The Devil In The White City was being developed as a directing vehicle at Paramount Pictures for Martin Scorsese with Leonardo DiCaprio set to star in the American serial tale set years before the turn of the century in 1893.

The project was more recently converted into a streaming series at Hulu and there is now word from Deadline that Keanu Reeves (John Wick, The Matrix) is being courted for a role, this would be the actor’s first jump to television excluding the made-for-TV film Babes In Toyland co-starring Drew Barrymore.

It’s unclear if Reeves would be playing the role of architect Daniel H. Burnham or the doctor/serial killer Henry H. Holmes.

Here’s how Deadline describes the project:

The Devil in the White City tells the true story of two men, an architect and a serial killer, whose fates were forever linked by The Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. It follows Daniel H. Burnham, a brilliant and fastidious architect racing to make his mark on the world and Henry H. Holmes, a handsome and cunning doctor who fashioned his own pharmaceutical “Murder Castle” on fair grounds – a palace built to seduce, torture and mutilate young women. The story takes the viewer on a tour of murder, romance and mystery in the gilded age.

Todd Field will direct the first two episodes.

If Keanu Reeves signs on it’s unknown how this would affect the shoot for John Wick 5, the final chapter in the Lionsgate action series. The final installment that could go into production before or after Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot, which has British actor Henry Cavill attached for a role, stars shooting.

Lionsgate recently announced that John Wick 4 has been delayed to March 24, 2023.

‘Predator 5’ Officially Titled ‘Prey’ & Heading To Hulu In Summer 2022

Back in September, The Ronin confirmed that the next Predator film would be a co-production between 20th Century Studios and Hulu.

However, Predator 5 is a co-production between 20th Century Studios and Hulu, which means it could skip a traditional theatrical release to become a Hulu exclusive.

It’s now been confirmed that Predator 5, titled Prey, will become a Hulu exclusive as we mentioned and as trades predicted will be dropped sometime in the summer of 2022.

Deadline also now adds a synopsis:

Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, following Naru, a skilled female warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly evolved alien predator.

Three actors had been announced for the cast for the film, two of which The Ronin previously mentioned were involved with the new Predator film. They Include Amber Midthunder (Legion), Dakota Beavers, and Dane Diliergo.

Filming by director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) had shot the sci-fi prequel in Calgary, Alberta, Canada under the working title of Skulls, many got confused with the film’s final title, which is now Prey.

New ‘Hellraiser’ Movie Will Have A Female Version Of Pinhead Played By Jamie Clayton

Nia DaCosta’s recent release of the Candyman soft-reboot proved that not all horror remakes/re-imaginings are created equal, some can actually improve upon the original. However, we get plenty of examples of films that just shouldn’t exist and because of this, it’s tough to gauge which projects will ultimately be great.

A new Hellraiser movie is on the way at Spyglass Media Group and in a press release via The Playlist that their new horror flick, directed by David Bruckner, is heading to Hulu. Mentioned in the casting list, Jamie Clayton will be playing a female incarnation of the beloved horror iconic Pinhead.

Also, Clive Barker has joined the film as an executive producer.

According to Spyglass and Hulu, the “loyal, yet evolved re-imagining” of “Hellraiser” stars Odessa A’zion (“Grand Army”) in the lead role opposite Jamie Clayton (“Sense8”) as the iconic Pinhead. Yes, it appears Pinhead is getting a major makeover with Clayton taking on the role and putting a new spin on the legendary horror baddie. The supporting cast includes Brandon Flynn (“13 Reasons Why”), Goran Visnjic (“The Boys”), Drew Starkey (“Love, Simon”), Adam Faison (“Everything’s Gonna Be Okay”), Aoife Hinds (“Normal People”), and Hiam Abbass (“Succession”). In addition, “Hellraiser” creator and filmmaker, Clive Barker, has joined the project as an executive producer.

Some other installments of established horror franchises on the horizon include Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, Scream 5, a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film heading to Netflix, and lost-gesting reboot of Friday The 13th.

HELLRAISER – Sexual deviant Frank (Sean Chapman) inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank’s body apart. When Frank’s brother (Andrew Robinson) and his wife, Julia (Clare Higgins), move into Frank’s old house, they accidentally bring what is left of Frank back to life. Frank then convinces Julia, his one-time lover, to lure men back to the house so he can use their blood to reconstruct himself.

‘Predator 5’ Officially Wraps Filming With Amber Midthunder, Dakota Beavers & Dane Diliegro Confirmed For Roles

It’s officially a wrap on Predator 5! Cinematographer Jeff Cutter reveals on Instagram that the film has finished production after spending the summer filming in Calgary, Alberta.

He also confirmed three actors for the film two of which The Ronin previously mentioned were involved with the new Predator film. They Include Amber Midthunder (Legion), Dakota Beavers, and Dane Diliergo.

UPDATE: Kyle Strauts, who we first revealed in May would be back in the predator role after appearing in Shane Black’s The Predator has also confirmed his role in the pic.

The new pic directed by 10 Cloverfield Lane’s Dan Trachtenberg will follow a group of Indigenous humans, the assumption has been this will be the first film in the Predator franchise taking place before the events of the original and will be a period film.

Filming kicked off back on June 10.

Predator 5’s production team consists of the aforementioned cinematographer Jeff Cutter (10 Cloverfield Lane), production designer Kara Lindstrom (Den of Thieves), and stunt coordinator Steven McMichael (Damnation).

Predator 5 isn’t the only project from the Alien/Predator franchise in the works has Ridley Scott has been teasing a third Alien prequel era film is on the table at 20th Century Studios and Scott is producing an Earthbound Alien series from Noah Hawley (Legion, Fargo) at FX.

It’ll be curious to see if Trachtenberg’s film will be a one-off or connect to future installments or a series.

Disney hasn’t announced a release date but trades had been speculation it would land a spot in the Summer of 2022.
