Ewan McGregor Says His ‘Star Wars’ Series ‘Kenobi’ Begins Shooting In March

Ewan McGregor previously chatted with Entertainment Tonight to promote Apple TV+’s Long Way Up, where he revealed that production on Kenobi has been pushed to the spring and is indeed being planned as a single standalone season.

MCGREGOR: “Spring next year we start, I’m really excited about it. It’s gonna be great, I think. As I understand, it’s a standalone season. We’ll see. Who knows?”

This is now an update from Ewan.

Appearing on BBC’s The Graham Norton Show he stated cameras would begin rolling in March, giving an actual start month for the Star Wars series. Originally, they had planned on starting in January.

MCGREGOR: “Yeah, it’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi story I suppose…we start shooting it in March next year.”

While speaking with ACE Universe back in June he confirmed that they would be implementing the StageCraft technology used on The Mandalorian. This could suggest they will be using the new setup at Pinewood Studios UK.

MCGREGOR: “[The prequels] were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set. I don’t know if you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes of The Mandalorian series, but they employ that incredible screen…it’s pretty amazing. It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us, as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”

The Mandalorian’s Deborah Chow is directing with recent script rewrites from Army of The Dead’s Joby Harold.

While we’ve had a string of casting announcements for Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor series there haven’t been any for the Kenobi series and with a March start we will likely start hearing some news on that front in the very near future.

‘Kenobi’ Filming Start Bumped To Spring and Will Have A Single Season Confirms Ewan McGregor

Earlier in the year, Obi-Wan Kenobi actor Ewan McGregor said on the red carpet of Birds of Prey that the Star Wars series unofficially referred to as Kenobi would begin shooting in January of 2021.

Ewan recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight to promote Apple TV+’s Long Way Up, where he revealed that production on Kenobi has been pushed to the spring and is indeed being planned as a single standalone season.

MCGREGOR: “Spring next year we start, I’m really excited about it. It’s gonna be great, I think. As I understand, it’s a standalone season. We’ll see. Who knows?”

While speaking with ACE Universe back in June he confirmed that they would be implementing the StageCraft technology used on The Mandalorian.

MCGREGOR: “[The prequels] were all blue screen and green screen and it was hard to imagine, but nowadays I think things have moved on so much, and I think a lot of what you see is gonna be what we see on the set. It makes you feel like you’re in the place, it’s going to feel realer for us, as actors. And I think we’ll be using some of that technology on our show.”

Screenwriter Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of The Sword, Army of The Dead) had been recently hired to do rewrites for the Star Wars series after there were reported delays due to script issues.

It’s still set to be directed by Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian).

While the Cassian Andor series has been hiring multiple actors for their cast, the Kenobi series has yet to have any names announced. The Mandalorian beings airing on Disney+ starting on October 30th and its third season is already in the pre-production stages.

Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Christoph Waltz, David Bradley, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, and Others Join Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pinocchio’ Movie

Today, the bulk of the voice cast for Guillermo del Toro’s animated Pinocchio film for Netflix has been finally announced. The Hollywood Reporter first reported the casting additions but their website is currently having technical issues.

A handful of actors have previously worked with del Toro but there are also plenty of newcomers as well. Ewan McGregor had previously outed himself for the project months back during an interview.

This version of the classic Carlo Collodi tale will take more of a grim setting than the Disney counterpart as it will take place during the rise of fascism in Mussolini’s Italy.

Here is the full cast list for the stop-motion animation feature film.

  • Gregory Mann as Pinocchio
  • Ewan McGregor (Kenobi, Doctor Sleep) as Cricket
  • David Bradley (Harry Potter franchise, Game of Thrones) as Geppetto
  • Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer)
  • Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained)
  • Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, IT, Ghostbusters: Afterlife)
  • Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley, Thor: Ragnarok)
  • John Turturro (The Batman)
  • Ron Perlman (Nightmare Alley, Hellboy)
  • Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen)
  • Burn Gorman (Pacific Rim, Game of Thrones)

Production on Pinocchio started last fall at ShadowMachine’s studio in Portland, Oregon with Mark Gustafson co-directing alongside del Toro from a script penned by Guillermo and Patrick McHale.

Alexandre Desplat will be handling the film’s music and score.

Guillermo is expected to resume production on his thriller Nightmare Alley on September 16th in Toronto and complete principal photography by late November.

Ewan McGregor Confirms ‘Kenobi’ Series Will Employ StageCraft VFX Used By ‘The Mandalorian’

Ewan McGregor earlier in the year revealed on the Birds of Prey red carpet that the Kenobi series would be pushing it’s start date from the summer to January 2021. This was due to script issues and Lucasfilm ended up hiring Joby Harold (King Arthur: Legend of The Sword, Army of The Dead) to do rewrites for the Star Wars series that will be directed by Deborah Chow.

Ace Universe was able to speak with Ewan McGregor, where he revealed that they’re expected to be using the StageCraft visual effects on the untitled Kenobi series that were employed in Season 1-2 of The Mandalorian.

You can check out the entire interview conducted by ACE host Angélique Roché below.

Hopefully, they’ll be able to be able to begin shooting in January as planned and if that happens there is a good chance that we’ll end up seeing the Kenobi series ready to air on Disney+ sometime between late 2021 and early/mid-2022.
