‘The Marvels’ Enlists ‘Doctor Strange 2’ & ‘Overlord’ Stunt Coordinator Jo McLaren

Director Nia DaCosta is hard at work in the United Kingdom with the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, that stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan (to debut in the Ms. Marvel series).

While most of the film’s crew has been revealed, The Ronin can confirm that the film’s stunt coordinator will be Jo McLaren. The veteran stunt woman recently worked with Marvel and director Sam Raimi on Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. McLaren was also the stunt coordinator on Bad Robot’s WWII horror action pic Overlord alongside Alex Garland’s sci-fi film Annihilation and his tech thriller series DEVS.

We first revealed that James Gunn has hired Hawkeye’s stunt coordinator Heidi Moneymaker for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3, which will begin shooting next month if the IATSE strike can be avoided next week.

New additions to the cast are expected to include Zawe Ashton set to play a villain and Park Seo-Joon (Parasite) also is said to have a role.

Plot details on the pic are scarce, but there is an expectation that there will be cross-pollination between the casts of The Marvels and the Skull event series Secret Invasion, this was highlighted when Samuel L. Jackson shot his scenes for the film before announcing today on Instagram he’s starting shooting the Disney+ show.

Filming will mainly shoot at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England with a production team that has cinematographer Sean Bobbitt (Widows, Judas & The Black Messiah) and production designer Cara Brower (Candyman). However, we learned not too long ago that some sequences will be shot at Pinewood Studios UK, likely related to The Volume/StageCraft facilities.

The original film earned an impressive $1.128 billion at the global box office making it one of the most successful superhero debut films of all-time.

It’ll be interesting to see if Disney+ Day on November 12 will reveal any spinoffs connected to the cosmic side of the MCU or if they’ll announce a Season 2 commitment for Ms. Marvel.

The Marvels has a release date of November 11, 2022.

‘The Marvels’ Director Nia DaCosta Originally Pitched A Movie Featuring Galactus & ‘X-Men’ Characters

Candyman director Nia DaCosta made headlines this weekend becoming the first the film to give a black female director a #1 hit at the domestic box office. She’s also currently shooting Captain Marvel 2/The Marvels in England.

While promoting Candyman with an interview with The Guardian, the filmmaker reveals she pitched Marvel Studios and producer Mary Livanos a very different project before agreeing to make the Captain Marvel sequel.

“I just nerded out. I was like, here are the movies I think you should do! Galactus, Storm and Scott Summers team-up movie! Blah blah blah! She just endured me going in super-deep. And she also gave me a lot of confidence that I would have the creative latitude to not just basically be a puppet on a string.”

This sounds like this was after the merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox, as she may have assumed they were rushing into using those former Fox characters. Interestingly enough, Jon Watts did end up land the directing gig for Fantastic Four and was announced for it back in December.

The Marvels (working title Goat Rodeo) as we’ve previously confirmed will mainly shoot at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England with a production team that has cinematographer Sean Bobbitt (Widows, Judas & The Black Messiah) and production designer Cara Brower (Candyman).

The cast consists of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, and Zawe Ashton is reportedly playing the film’s villain.

There is an expectation that cast members of the Secret Invasion event series will also cross-pollinate with the sequel.

Local South Korean outlets reported on Parasite actor Park Seo-Joon joining the film, but have yet to be supported by Hollywood trades or Marvel/Disney.

The Marvels will hit theaters on November 11, 2022.

Brie Larson Talks Currently Shooting ‘The Marvels’ & Massive Sets: “I Get To Go To My Own Private Disneyland”

Yesterday, Brie Larson did an interview with SiriusXM Stars (captured by and shared online by fans as the full interview was on their app), where she talked about the routine of shooting The Marvels directed by Nia Dacosta (Candyman) and compared the massive sets on the production to her own private Disneyland.

Confirming that production is indeed underway in the United Kingdom.

Director Nia DaCosta recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the Captain Marvel sequel and how Marvel Studios is giving her more freedom than she’s had on her last two projects.

“It’s a lot less traumatizing to work on for sure [laughs]. But this movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things. But no, it’s been nice to work in a different world for sure. It’s amazing. [It’s] more [freedom] than I’ve had on anything. It’s great because we’re all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie.”

Local South Korean outlets reported on Parasite actor Park Seo-Joon joining the film, but have yet to be supported by Hollywood trades or Marvel/Disney.

There is a proximity to the Skrull event series Secret Invasion (shooting in England and Scotland), which is also shooting close to Longcross and likely means the cast members on both shoots could crossover. It’s also assumed that Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel series will also plant seeds for The Marvels too.

Larson also teased alien worlds and off-world settings, which is nice to hear considering that the best parts of Captain Marvel took place on other planets than Earth.

Zawe Ashton was previously announced as playing a villain, but we’re still waiting on confirmation of that that role will be.

Disney has given the sequel a release date of November 11, 2022.

‘The Marvels’: Director Nia DaCosta Says Marvel Is Giving Her A Lot Of Freedom On The ‘Captain Marvel’ Sequel

Captain Marvel was a huge hit for Marvel Studios as the film, like Black Panther, crossed a billion dollars at the global box office and they’re already moving forward with a sequel that was recently re-titled as The Marvels. The new title seems to reflect the group of three different generations of Captain Marvel incarnations with a cast that consists of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, and Zawe Ashton is reportedly playing the film’s villain.

Confirming that she is in London getting ready to shoot The Marvels, director Nia DaCosta spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the Captain Marvel sequel and how Marvel Studios is giving her more freedom than she’s had on her last two projects.

“It’s a lot less traumatizing to work on for sure [laughs]. But this movie also deals with specific, personal, sometimes sad things. But no, it’s been nice to work in a different world for sure. It’s amazing. [It’s] more [freedom] than I’ve had on anything. It’s great because we’re all just comic-book nerds who want to make a great comic-book movie,” DaCosta tells Entertainment Weekly.

Local South Korean outlets reported on Parasite actor Park Seo-Joon joining the film, but have yet to be supported by Hollywood trades or Marvel/Disney.

Disney has given the sequel a release date of November 11, 2022.

‘The Marvels’: South Korean Actor Park Seo-Joon Rumored For Role; Played Min In Oscar-Winner ‘Parasite’

We might be getting an actor from Best Picture winner Parasite in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, if a new casting rumor ends up getting confirmed. South Korean actor Park Seo-Joon, who had a small role as tutor Min in Parasite is being mentioned by a local outlets as landing an offer/in talks for an undisclosed role in the Captain Marvel sequel.

Forbes points out mainstream news outlets haven’t chimed-in on the casting alongside the actor’s agency or Marvel Studios.

International outlets have been able to land these types of casting stories in the past, however, we should be cautious until there is further confirmation.

He wouldn’t be the first South Korean actor to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Claudia Kim played Dr. Helen Cho (mother of Amadeus Cho) in Avengers: Age of Ultron and has Train To Busan’s Don Lee taking the role of Gilgamesh in Chloe Zhao’s Eternals.

If confirmed, Park Seo-Joon would join Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, and Zawe Ashton is reportedly playing the film’s villain. There is also an expectation the sequel will share cast members with the Disney+ series Secret Invasion as the cosmic organization S.W.O.R.D. will have a large role in both MCU projects.

I’m sure fans are curious if we’ll see other characters join the roster such as Blue Marvel leading to the MCU version of The Ultimates and if it will have a larger connection to the Skrull invasion. It remains to be seen if villains like Jonathan Major’s Kang The Conqueror or Skrull Queen Veranke could be the threats or something else entirely.

The Marvels has a production team that includes cinematographer Sean Bobbitt (Judas & The Black Messiah) and production designer Cara Brower (Candyman). It’s confirmed to shoot primarily at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England under the working title of Jambalaya.

The sequel will be released on November 11, 2022.

Working Title For Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion’ Series Is ‘Jambalaya’

The Ronin has exclusively confirmed that the working title for Marvel’s Skrull event crossover series, Secret Invasion, will be Jambalaya. This is simply the production title the studio will use during the filming of the show in the United Kingdom, which is said to go in front of cameras sometime in the fall.

In the comics, Secret Invasion focuses on the reveal that multiple people in power and even superheroes have been replaced with an alien race with the ability to shape-shift, called the Skrulls. They were first introduced in Captain Marvel as peaceful cosmic refugees and covered for Nick Fury and Maria Hill while they were seemingly off-world having a space station built (for S.W.O.R.D.?), as seen at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

The versions of the Skrulls we’ve previously seen don’t have Super-Skrull abilities, because that had been tied to the Fantastic Four film rights. With the rights back at Marvel Studios, it means that the Skrulls can now mimic the superpowers of various heroes and villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making them even more dangerous opponents than before.

While the show is being billed as a crossover event they haven’t officially announced if cast members from the Captain Marvel sequel, The Marvels, will have duel roles on the Disney+ series, but it’s sort of expected given that S.W.O.R.D. is likely a key element in both projects. It also doesn’t hurt that Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels is confirmed to be filming primarily at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England, making the possibility of cast cross-pollination very good.

Secret Invasion’s impressive cast already consists of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull leader Talos, Oscar-winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, Hot Fuzz, The Crown), four-time Emmy nominee Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones, Solo: A Star Wars Story), Kingsley Ben-Adir (One Night In Miami, Peaky Blinders) said to be playing a villain, and most recent addition to the Marvel series is character actor Christopher McDonald (Hacks, Happy Gilmore).

The show’s head writer is Kyle Bradstreet with directors Thomas Bezhucha (Let Him Go) and Ali Selim (The Looming Tower) recently announced.

Other recent working titles for Marvel feature film projects include the following.

BLACK WIDOW = BLUE BAYOU

ETERNALS = SACK LUNCH

SHANG-CHI & THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS = STEAMBOAT

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS = STELLAR VORTEX

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME = THE NOVEMBER PROJECT

THOR: LOVE & THUNDER = THE BIG SALAD

CAPTAIN MARVEL 2 = GOAT RODEO

BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER = SUMMER BREAK

ANT-MAN & THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA = DUST BUNNY

Given that production is taking place later in the year, we shouldn’t expect to see Secret Invasion begin airing on Disney+ until late 2022 or early 2023.

Nia DaCosta’s ‘The Marvels’ Confirmed To Shoot At Longcross Studios

The Ronin has been able to confirm that the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels will be shooting mainly at Longcross Studios in Surrey, England. The stages have been previously used for other Marvel Studios projects such as Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of The Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and most recently for Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen.

Candyman’s Nia DaCosta is directing The Marvels as she reunites with production designer Cara Bower (Candyman, Us) and will have the extremely talented cinematographer Sean Bobbitt (Widows, Judas & The Black Messiah, Shame) behind the camera.

The cast officially consists of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan. The only new addition to the cast so far is Zawe Ashton, who is said to be playing a villain. We are assuming that there will be crossover with the casts of The Marvels and their Skrull event series Secret Invasion given the two projects will be shooting around the same time in the United Kingdom.

It’s new title could suggest they might be aiming to add more heroes to the lineup such as Blue Marvel, but that remains to be seen. However, it’s a little odd that the studio has seemingly pivoted from a solo film franchise to what now looks like a team project bumping Larson’s Captain Marvel from the title.

There has been confirmation previously that Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania would be shooting at Pinewood Studios UK, where things like Black Widow, and Eternals have shot in the last couple of years. Other projects heading to the United Kingdom in the next year or so include Moon Knight, Secret Invasion, and James Gunn’s Guardians of The Galaxy Vol.3. There is also a chance that Season 2 of Loki could be moving from Atlanta to England.

The Marvels will hit theaters on November 11, 2022.

‘The Marvels’: Production Designer Cara Brower Confirmed For ‘Captain Marvel’ Sequel

The Ronin has been able to confirm that Candyman production designer Cara Brower is indeed working on Captain Marvel 2. The upcoming sequel has been newly titled as The Marvels during Marvel Studios’ big Phase 4 presentation yesterday. Cara previously worked with director Nia DaCosta on MGM’s Candyman sequel/soft-reboot produced by Jordan Peele. As an art director she worked with Jordan on his Get Out follow-up Us and the fantastic Hail Caesar! from the Coen Brothers.

Confirming Cara as the production designer comes after cinematographer Sean Bobbitt previously announced he was also on the production team. Bobbitt’s credits include 12 Years A Slave, Judas & The Black Messiah, Widows, Byzantium, Shame, Hunger, The Place Beyond The Pines, and the Oldboy remake. Assembling these two folks would suggest production isn’t that far away.

The Marvels will see three generations of Marvel Comics heroines come together with Carol Danvers played by Oscar-winner Brie Larson, Monica Rambeau played Teyonah Parris, and Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan played by Iman Vellani. It’ll be interesting to see how the dynamic works and if we’ll be seeing an Earthbound story or something very much taking place within the cosmic side of the MCU.

British actress Zawe Ashton (Nocturnal Animals, Greta, Velvet Buzzsaw) has been reportedly tapped to play the film’s villain, it’s unclear if she’ll be playing a human or alien foe.

There is a shot that Adam Brashear aka Blue Marvel could also join their ranks as the film could introduce a version of The Ultimates to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Also, there might be a connection to the Skrull event series Secret Invasion as S.W.O.R.D. becomes a crossover organization in future film and television projects.

Disney has given The Marvels a release date of November 11, 2022 and will shoot under the working title Goat Rodeo in the United Kingdom alongside projects like Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, Moon Knight, Secret Invasion, and Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3.

Marvel Studios Changes ‘Captain Marvel 2’ Title To ‘The Marvels’

Another big title change has come to Nia DaCosta’s Captain Marvel 2 as it will be simply known as The Marvels coming out on November 11, 2022.

I have to assume the idea is that all three actresses, Brie Larson (Carol Danvers), Teynoah Parris (Monica Rambeau), and Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan) will be representing three generations of Captain Marvel incarnations. However, I do think folks are going to be a little upset that Marvel has seemingly turned the Captain Marvel sequel into a team project instead. Potentially caving to the jerks who have been triggered by Brie Larson’s off-camera comments and consist online attacks against Captain Marvel despite the film earning a billion at the box office.

I’m curious if The Marvels become the MCU’s version of The Green Lantern Corps. and paves the way for Blue Marvel to join their roster.

There is an expectation that The Marvels and the Disney+ series Secret Invasion will have some connections with each other, given the Skrulls and S.W.O.R.D. will be explored in both MCU projects. I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if the trio of actresses will be appearing in Secret Invasion.

‘Ms. Marvel’: New Set Photos Reveal Kamala Khan’s Comic Book Accurate Costume

As filming on Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series Ms. Marvel continues in Atlanta, Georgia, some new set photos had just been released by tabloid outlet Just Jared that feature Canadian actress Iman Vellani as her character Kamala Khan wearing her Ms. Marvel costume. This would be the first time the young actor has been spotted wearing the costume and should get fans excited for her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut later this year.

Below is a link to Just Jared’s photos.

Ms. Marvel is just one part of Marvel’s plans to boost the amount of diverse characters in the MCU alongside bringing together a more cohesive and interwoven connection between their films and television shows. Kamala Khan is a Pakistani-American teen living in New Jersey with her Muslim family, making her one of the youngest superheroes to lead her own project. In the comics, Kamala is a huge Captain Marvel fan and develops her own superpowers connected to being an inhuman, it’s unconfirmed if we’ll end up seeing a rebooted version of The Inhumans anytime soon after an unsuccessful series attempt at ABC and Marvel Television.

However, it’s already been announced that Iman will be starring with Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris in Captain Marvel 2, directed by Candyman’s Nia DaCosta. Seeing her character make the jump to the films sooner rather than later. There is a strong possibility that we might see a direct connection between the events of Captain Marvel 2 and the Skrull event series Secret Invasion, as both projects will be filming in the United Kingdom around the same time.

As mention at the top, Ms. Marvel will debut in late 2021 on Disney+ just like the Hawkeye series, baring any further delays that could push both shows into 2022. The next big live-action series from Marvel heading to the streaming service is Loki starting on June 11.

Back in December, Marvel Studios revealed this sizzle-footage for the series.
