Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ Taps Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich & More As Filming Begins On The WWII Drama

Filming on Christopher Nolan’s next movie has begun, as his WWII drama Oppenheimer will focus on J. Robert Oppenheimer and the development of the atomic bomb for the U.S. military that was unleashed on Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing thousands and in the process ending the war.

The high-profile project has added even more interesting names.

The latest additions to the call-sheet include Kenneth Branagh, Jason Clarke, Alden Ehrenreich, Jack Quaid, and David Krumholtz.

They join a stacked cast that already consists of Cillian Murphy playing the titular Oppenheimer alongside Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Dane DeHaan, Dylan Arnold, and Matthew Modine.

It’ll be interesting to see if Christopher Nolan will attempt to document the Pacific War and the Japanese side of the story along with the civilians that were essentially erased from the planet as part of a power move by the United States to end the bloody South Pacific campaign with an extreme show of force before having to invade the mainland of Japan. It was one of the darkest moments in human history.

However, hiring a mostly all-white group of actors would suggest they’ll only be coming from allies’ perspective of the war.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema will reunite with Nolan after working on, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet along with Oscar-winning Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson (Tenet, Black Panther, The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) being part of the crew.

Universal Pictures will release Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023.

Peacock Sci-Fi Series ‘Brave New World’ Has Been Cancelled – UCP Shopping It Around For A New Home

As NBCUniversal is trying to attract people to their new streaming service Peacock, they’ve now cancelled one of their original series.

Deadline is reporting that the sci-fi series Brave New World will not be getting a second season at Peacock but could find new life elsewhere as the series studio UCP is now shopping it around to find a new home for it. This news doesn’t sound like Brave New World is necessarily dead until it can’t find someone to buy it.

Peacock isn’t a streaming service available in all markets (similar to Hulu and HBO Max) and Canadian viewers were able to watch the series on Canadian station Showcase. It’s unknown if it finds a new home if Showcase will be able to keep airing the series.

The streamer is also developing a new Battlestar Galactica series from Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail.

BRAVE NEW WORLD – Based on Aldous Huxley’s groundbreaking novel, Brave New World imagines a utopian society that has achieved peace and stability through the prohibition of monogamy, privacy, money, family, and history itself.

As citizens of New London, Bernard Marx (Harry Lloyd) and Lenina Crowne (Jessica Brown Findlay) have only ever known a rigid social order, a perfect pharmaceutical called Soma, and a culture of instant gratification and ubiquitous sex. Curious to explore life beyond the strictures of their society, the two New Worlders embark on a vacation to the Savage Lands, where they become embroiled in a harrowing and violent rebellion. Bernard and Lenina are rescued by John the Savage (Alden Ehrenreich), who escapes with them back to New London. John’s arrival in the New World soon threatens to disrupt its utopian harmony, leaving Bernard and Lenina to grapple with the repercussions. The three become entwined in a fraught relationship that awakens them to the dangers of their own conditioning.

From UCP, in association with Amblin Television, the series is executive produced by David Wiener and Grant Morrison, along with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, co-presidents of Amblin Television. Brian Taylor executive produces on the first episode. Wiener also serves as series showrunner. Owen Harris will direct the first two episodes and executive produce the series.

Alden Ehrenreich Suggests He’s Moved On From Han Solo Role – “It’s Not A Huge Part of My Life Anymore”

Despite all the internet rumors of Alden Ehrenreich reprising the role of Han Solo in film sequels and various Disney+ shows the actor himself seems to be moving on to other projects like his new science fiction series Brave New World.

While promoting the Peacock original series based on the classic Aldous Huxley novel, Alden suggests to UK outlet the Independent that he is moving on his life beyond Star Wars saying “it’s not a huge part of my life anymore”.

EHRENREICH: “It’s not a huge part of my life anymore. But my sense is that there was a really clear disconnect between the way it was really received and then the stories that came out about it. That we had a troubled production or whatever. And it’s not really a story that the movie did totally fine. It didn’t make a billion dollars but it did fine and people liked it – but that’s not interesting. What’s interesting is: ‘This is the biggest movie of all time and it was absolutely a disaster’.”

“I knew, no matter what happened, that I was putting myself in a situation where people would be saying things about me. But honestly, that whole experience felt like this huge, high-seas adventure.”

I’m not sure these comments will quell fan speculation of him returning to the role in the future, even though, he’ll eventually age-out making it impossible for him to return.

Despite recent rumors over the summer of Donald Glover getting his own Lando show I don’t know if they’ll be able to wrangle Alden back.
