‘Dune’ Rumored To Get A Traditional Theatrical Release To Avoid Lawsuit From Legendary

WarnerMedia may end up backing down thanks to the threat of lawsuit from Legendary after it was announced their pricey Dune remake was being thrown on to HBO Max (day-and-date model) without their consent or knowledge. The production company who had spent their own money on 75% of the budgets of both Dune and Godzilla vs Kong were not consulted before their films were added to the domestic streaming service putting their films in direct competition with the theatrical release.

Deadline seemingly has some sort of vague update concerning the fate of Dune, however, the outlet is making sure to use the word “rumors” when stating WarnerMedia may end up keeping the traditional theatrical release. We have to assume this would be a way to avoid further legal issues with Legendary, who certainly have the legal grounds to take them to court.

Battles big and small are being fought on numerous films: Legendary is in a big fight that might result in lawsuits after it financed 75% of tent poles Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong and was completely blindsided. Rumors have the solution to that breach being to preserve Dune as a traditional theatrical to preserve its franchise potential and since its October 1 release date falls well after the estimated late spring date when Covid vaccines should achieve herd immunity. Godzilla vs. Kong might stay an HBO Max hybrid in its May 21 slot, but only if Warner Bros makes a deal with Legendary that uses as a base the $250 million value established when the film was shopped earlier to Netflix.

Legendary wasn’t the only party upset over the HBO Max announcement, director Denis Villeneuve penned a strongly worded editorial condemning the move. Denis happens to be producing and directing a Dune spinoff series for HBO Max titled Dune: The Sisterhood that would most likely be put into chaos over a falling-out between WarnerMedia and Legendary/Villeneuve.

DUNE – A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

The film stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name,” “Little Women”), Rebecca Ferguson (“Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”), Oscar Isaac (the “Star Wars” franchise) Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “Avengers: Infinity War”), Stellan Skarsgård (HBO’s “Chernobyl,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “Avengers: Endgame”), Stephen McKinley Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird”), Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming,” HBO’s “Euphoria”), David Dastmalchian (“Blade Runner 2049,” “The Dark Knight”), Chang Chen (“Mr. Long,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Netflix’s “Sex Education”), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years,” “Assassin’s Creed”), with Jason Momoa (“Aquaman,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”).

Guy Ritchie Confirmed To Reunite With ‘The Gentlemen’ Cinematographer Alan Stewart For MI6 Thriller ‘Five Eyes’ – Stars Jason Statham & Aubrey Plaza

The Ronin has been able to confirm that director Guy Ritchie will be reuniting with cinematographer Alan Stewart for his upcoming spy thriller formerly titled Five Eyes. Stewart has previously worked on Ritchie’s Aladdin, The Gentlemen, and his other upcoming Jason Statham action project Wrath of Man.

Jason Statham and Aubrey Plaza are attached for the lead roles with more casting news on the horizon. Filming is expected to begin sometime next year in Europe, hopefully, once the pandemic is a little more manageable as London is currently under a new lockdown and European countries not allowing entry from the United Kingdom.

The story follows MI6 guns-and-steel agent (Statham) who is recruited by a global intelligence alliance to track down and stop the sale of a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. Reluctantly paired with CIA high-tech expert, Fortune sets off on a globe-trotting mission where he will have to use all of his charm, ingenuity and stealth to track down and infiltrate billionaire arms broker.

The Fives Eyes is an intelligence alliance comprising Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, which was founded back in 1941. This should give you an idea of the nationalities of the other characters in the film.

We previously revealed Ritchie would also working with Wrath of Man production designer Martyn Johns on the action pic.

Guy is developing a television series for Miramax based on The Gentlemen and has been attached to direct Aladdin 2 for Disney.

David Gordon Green Reportedly In Talks To Direct ‘Exorcist’ Sequel For Blumhouse – William Friedkin Debunks His Involvement

Blumhouse is zeroing-in on a director for their sequel to The Exorcist.

According to Observer (backed-up by trades), David Gordon Green is in talks to direct the horror project. David you might remember is behind the successful Halloween soft-reboot/sequel along with the two sequels Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends.

Details are a little scarce and if they’ll be attempting to make a film with returning characters or simply reworking the existing mythology for something new but establishing the events of the original film still happened.

The Exorcist is considered a benchmark film in the horror genre as it was a massive box office hit and also helped elevate the quality of horror films that could be made by filmmakers beyond the B-movie. The previous sequels have never really match the bar set by the original and this new project will have rather large shoes to fill.

THE EXORCIST – One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.

The original film’s director William Friedkin took to Twitter recently to debunk an IMDB listing that suggested he was involved with the new project and makes it clear he never would be part of it. I guess they won’t get a blessing similar to John Carpenter on their Halloween sequels.

FRIEDKIN: “There’s a rumor on IMDB that I’m involved with a new version of The Exorcist. This isn’t a rumor, it’s a flat-out life. There’s not enough money or motivation in the world to get me to do this.”

‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’ Concept Art Reveals Plans To Honor Sith From The Old Republic

Some Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker artwork revealed officially by Industrial Light & Magic’s website reveals plans to further make Legends sith from The Old Republic era canon. At one point, it was revealed that the Sith Trooper legions on Exegol were named after Legendary sith and those plans seemed to have once extended to the Sith Citadel on the planet as well.

The engraving artwork below seemingly includes homages to sith such as Darth Revan, Darth Nihilus, Darth Malak, and Darth Malgus. It’s certainly disappointing

Lucasfilm is expected to explore The Old Republic at some point in the future. Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed Lucasfilm has talked about making projects within The Old Republic but wasn’t sure when they’d happen and there was a report from BuzzFeed that Laeta Kalogridis (Altered Carbon, Shutter Island) was developing a trilogy of films set in The Old Republic era.

I’m sure eventually they’ll consider making canon video games like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order set in The Old Republic.

That point in the Star Wars timeline would allow Lucasfilm to finally make original content that wasn’t beholden to previous trilogies and could ignore the video games to create brand new canon while possibly creating new characters and retrofitting established Legends characters as well. Because most of it is Legends they can redo things for live-action incarnations.

It was announced that Leslye Headland’s Star Wars series The Acolyte would be taking place at the end of The High Republic and the female-centric project is expected to focus on Sith characters. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed that this could where Lucasfilm finally uses Legends character Darth Talon, who almost appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a villain. I think it would be amazing to see Lucasfilm finally explore the Sith Empire from The Old Republic as that would give hardcore Star Wars all the lightsaber battles they’ll ever need.

MGM Reportedly Exploring Sale – EON’s Partners On The James Bond Franchise

In a report coming from the Wall Street Journal, there are claims that MGM Holdings Inc. aka MGM Studios is now exploring the idea of a sale which includes their massive film library and involvement in the billion-dollar James Bond franchise (working with EON on the films as co-owners of the rights). Mentioning that the company is currently valued at $5.5 billion which could give you an idea of what their asking price might be.

MGM Holdings Inc., the movie studio behind the James Bond franchise, is exploring a sale, according to people familiar with the matter, betting that its library of content will prove attractive to companies pursuing growth in streaming video.

The company has a market value of around $5.5 billion, based on privately traded shares and including debt, some of the people said.

They don’t name potential suitors but allude to their valuation and attractiveness due to streaming services. Netflix and Disney are dealing with a crazy amount of debt which might put them out of the running. While Apple seems like a rational option, they recently backed-out on an offer to buy the exclusive rights to No Time To Die because MGM/EON asked too much, so those deep pockets have a limit. Not every streamer is going to have $5+ billion laying around when the pandemic has hit most entertainment companies hard.

I’m curious what this would mean for EON, who are traditionalists and have a controlling interest in the James Bond franchise and likely wouldn’t be terribly keen on turning their IP into some streaming film franchise. They’d likely want assurances that theatrical would still be on the table or it could turn into a messy legal fight, I would assume any sale would have to need EON’s blessing because the Bond stuff would be the more attractive aspect.

Here is how EON describes their relationship with MGM.

EON Productions Limited and Danjaq LLC are wholly owned and controlled by the Wilson/Broccoli family. Danjaq is the US based company that co-owns, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, the copyright to the existing James Bond films and controls the right to produce future James Bond films.

We’ll have to wait and see to if things will materialize next year.

Jon Favreau Announces ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ Shoots Before ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3 – Robert Rodriguez To Produce

The Mandalorian creator and producer Jon Favreau appeared on Good Morning America to make a special announcement.

At the end of the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm announced that The Book of Boba Fett expected to star Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen with it to begin airing on Disney+ in December 2021. We saw the pair arrive at Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine to assassinate an older Bib Fortuna with Boba Fett taking over the kingpin’s throne (a nod to Conan The Barbarian) suggesting that the series may explore the criminal syndicates of the Star Wars universe’s underworld, not just bounty hunting.

Jon revealing that The Book of Boba Fett will shoot first and then they’ll move into Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Also, Disney confirming Robert Rodriguez is involved on the producing team joining Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni.

Favreau also alluded to Pedro Pascal will return for Season 3 of The Mandalorian.

Deadline first reported that filming on the project has started weeks ago.

We’ve heard for over a week that Robert was being courted to lead his own Star Wars series and will be heavily involved with the show.

Only a matter of time before Danny Trejo is announced for a Star Wars role.

Other Disney+ projects set in the Star Wars universe on the horizon include Diego Luna’s Andor (currently filming in London), Deborah Chow’s Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen (set to begin shooting in March), Rangers of The New Republic, Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka series, Leslye Headland’s High Republic show The Acolyte, and another show featuring the iconic character Lando.

Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is also directing the next Star Wars film Star Wars: Rogue Squadron coming to theaters on December 22, 2023.

Here is the press release for the project from Lucasfilm.

Boba Fett is back. And his story is just beginning.

As teased in a surprise end-credit sequence following the season finale of The Mandalorian, the legendary bounty hunter’s journey will continue in The Book of Boba Fett. Jon Favreau, executive producer of The Mandalorian, confirmed today on Good Morning America that the new series is currently in production and will arrive December 2021, only on Disney+.

The Book of Boba Fett will be set within the timeline of The Mandalorian and star Temuera Morrison as the titular bounty hunter, along with Ming-Na Wen as Fennec Shand. Robert Rodriguez — who directed Chapter 14 of The Mandalorian, a thrilling installment that reintroduced Boba Fett to the Star Wars galaxy — joins Favreau and Dave Filoni as executive producer.

Boba Fett made his big-screen debut in 1980’s Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, becoming an instant fan favorite thanks to his visually arresting armor and cool demeanor. Jeremy Bulloch, the original actor inside the armor, passed away last week — but his legacy, including all he brought to Boba Fett, goes on. The Book of Boba Fett will carry that legacy forward.

Season 3 of The Mandalorian will go into production next year.

‘Nobody’: Bob Odenkirk Spent Two Years Training Including Hundreds of Hours Learning Fight Choreography Before Production Even Started

After the exciting trailer for Bob Odenkirk‘s action film Nobody it’s pretty interesting to hear him confirm he spent two years training for the film even before they shot a single frame. Here is what he had to say during a recent interview with IGN.

ODENKIRK: “I trained for two years before we started shooting. I knew I had a long way to go. I was a comedy writer for 25 years so I didn’t even exercise for most of my life. We weren’t trying to develop a superhero body. I look like a dad, I look like a regular guy. Maybe I eat fewer hamburgers than you, but I still eat hamburgers. I said, when this guy gets hurt I want that pain to linger. So many times people get punched and they shake it off and they’re fine. I wanted him to feel all the impact of the fighting and violence.”

They also reveal Bob spent hundreds of hours in the gym practicing the choreography for the fights which is going to be intense with the creator of John Wick, Derek Kolstad, writing the script and David Leitch producing the film, the action scenes had to be at next level than an average action flick. You might remember seeing behind the scenes videos for Keanu Reeves prepping for John Wick or Charlize Theron doing similar training for Atomic Blonde.

NOBODY – Sometimes the man you don’t notice is the most dangerous of all. Emmy winner Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul, The Post, Nebraska) stars as Hutch Mansell, an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, taking life’s indignities on the chin and never pushing back. A nobody. When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. His teenage son, Blake (Gage Munroe, The Shack), is disappointed in him and his wife, Becca (Connie Nielsen, Wonder Woman), seems to pull only further away. The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch’s long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must save his family from a dangerous adversary (famed Russian actor Aleksey Serebryakov, Amazon’s McMafia)—and ensure that he will never be underestimated as a nobody again. Nobody is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ilya Naishuller (Hardcore Henry), from a script by Derek Kolstad, the narrative architect of the John Wick franchise, and co-stars legendary Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd as Hutch’s father and multi-hyphenate musician-actor RZA as Hutch’s brother, whose own hidden talents aid Hutch in his quest for vengeance.

Universal had planned on releasing the film on February 19th, 202 but have pushed to February 26th.

SPOILERS: ‘The Mandalorian’ Chapter 16 Recap – Where Does The Show Go Now?

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THE SEASON 2 FINALE OF THE MANDALORIAN

The Season 2 finale titled The Rescue was directed by Peyton Reed (Ant-Man) and seemingly gives some closure to The Mandalorian‘s Season 1 narrative.

As I assumed, Mando seeks out help from Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves they agree to help as long as they get a shot at Moff Gideon and returning the Darksaber back to Mandalorians.

Things go south once they get on Gideon’s ship and Dark Troopers are activated, luckily, Mando sends them into space via the airlock and then has a duel with Moff Gideon.

Mando survives and with the Darksaber brings Moff Gideon to the bridge where everyone else is. Gideon informs Din Djain that he’s won the Darksaber and he cannot just hand it over to Bo-Katan it has to be won in combat.

The Dark Troopers return to the ship and start taking apart the blast doors at the bridge only for a lone X-Wing to arrive. A cloaked Luke Skywalker takes care of the Dark Trooper droids in what is likely the most action the character has seen in the entire franchise.

Mark Hamill reprises the role with the help of some uncanny valley CGI which I’m shocked Lucasfilm is still attempting to use after Tarkin and Princess Leia in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was such a mess, the VFX is slightly improved but, in my opinion, they should have gone with an actor like Sebastian Stan instead.

Skywalker with R2-D2 at his side agrees to take Grogu and train him as Mando gives a tearful goodbye promises they’ll see each other again.

With Grogu in the hands of Luke Skywalker and The Jedi, Din Djarin may end up joining forces with Bo-Katan if she doesn’t kill him for the Darksaber to regain her power. Season 3 will likely see focus on the Mandalorians trying to restore things post-Empire.

The episode ends with a button scene teasing the upcoming Boba Fett and Fennec Shand project The Book of Boba Fett which is coming out in December 2021. We see the pair arrive on Tatooine and blast their way into Jabba’s Palace with Fett killing an older Bib Fortuna seemingly taking his spot as the head of the criminal syndicate. I have to assume the series will see Fett positioning himself to be a leader within the criminal underworld of Star Wars.

Rosario Dawson will be leading the spinoff Ahsoka.

However, we don’t know who will be leading the other spinoff series Rangers of The New Republic.
