WarnerMedia’s Ann Sarnoff Says They Won’t Be Developing The Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’

DC Comics and Zack Snyder fans seemed to rejoice last week with Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally being released on HBO Max, the 4-hour juggernaut’s release seemed to give the impression to fans that there was a shot that David Ayer’s original cut of Suicide Squad referred to by fans as The Ayer Cut could see the light of day.

WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff seemed to dispel rumors The Ayer Cut was being worked on or even on the table in the future during an in-depth interview with Variety that was published yesterday. Ann was pretty blunt about The Ayer Cut when asked if they would be releasing that version of the film, stating the following.

SARNOFF: “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut.”

David Ayer had suggested the original version had a lot more of Jared Leto’s Joker and there had been some drastic editing involved with the final theatrical version. But it doesn’t look like that version aka The Ayer Cut is going to be released on HBO Max or anywhere else anytime soon.

The franchise is chugging along without David Ayer as James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6th.

Margot Robbie Is Curious To See The Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’

On the heels of Zack Snyder’s Justice League coming to HBO Max as an extended miniseries there have been multiple calls from fans for Warner Bros. to release the original cut of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. The director has confirmed there was plenty of tinkering and many scenes removed from the theatrical cut.

Harley Quinn actress Margot Robbie has now revealed on The Happy Sad Confused podcast that while she never saw this cut of the film she would like to.

ROBBIE: “I never saw the Ayer Cut. I know we shot a lot of stuff that didn’t make it into the movie. I would be very curious myself.”

Earlier this month, David Ayer took to Twitter to debunk a rumor that the Ayer Cut was coming to HBO Max replying with “not true”. There really hasn’t been any official signs that it is coming anytime soon.

Robbie has since moved on as Harley Quinn with Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey and James Gunn’s The Suicide Sqaud set to be released on August 6th, 2021. It’s possible we could see more of her as the character that’s if Harley survives the Suicide Squad sequel.

James Gunn Says Making A Superman Project “Was A Possiblity” Before Agreeing To Direct ‘The Suicide Squad’

In a new interview with Empire, The Suicide Squad writer/director spoke about when he agreed to make the DC Comics film before getting a call from Disney’s Alan Horn and Marvel’s Kevin Feige about coming back to make Guardians of The Galaxy 3.

He says that making a Superman project “was a possibility” after revealing that Feige had asked him if his DC project was indeed Superman.

After hearing from Horn, Gunn knew he had to update MCU head honcho Kevin Feige on his next project – who, when told it was a DC movie, asked: “Is it Superman?” Gunn stated that it wasn’t Superman (“That was a possibility,” he tells Empire) and explained that he had chosen The Suicide Squad. Feige’s reaction? “Please, please make a good movie. Just… make a great movie.”

At one time, it was rumored that Warner Bros. approached various filmmakers tackle a sequel to Man of Steel. However, another solo Superman film never materialized. The studio had been reportedly developing a Supergirl film that has seemingly been placed on paused for the foreseeable future.

Despite reports of Warner Bros. trying to get Henry Cavill to cameo as Superman (possibly in The Flash alongside other Justice League co-stars) his return for his own feature film is far from confirmed.

‘The Suicide Squad’ Tasked To Destroy A Nazi-Era Prison Lab Called Jotunheim and James Gunn Had Carte Blanche To Kill-Off Characters

We won’t get to watch James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad until next August month but there are some new details about the film coming out.

James Gunn took to Twitter to reveal that Warner Bros. allowed him to kill any of the characters he wanted after a fan suggested that certain characters and high-profile actors were safe because of their usefulness in future films.

GUNN: “No character was protected by DC. They gave me carte blanche to do what I wanted. That was one of the things we agreed to before I came to work for them. I wasn’t looking for shock value but I wanted the audience to know anything could happen.”

The Direct also caught-wind of a Reddit post from someone with an early copy of the latest issue of Empire Magazine where producer Peter Safran reveals that the Latin American location in footage will be the fictional island nation of Corto Maltese and happens to be the home of a Nazi facility called Jotunheim where experiments took place on prisoners. These excerpts have circulating at other sites.

SAFRAN: “There they have to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory named Jotunheim where political prisoners were held and experimentations took place.”

The Nazi connection and material that could be covered there might help to support the assumption that the film might indeed end up landing an R-rating.

The sizzle-reel trailer that dropped during DC FanDome also seemingly revealed that the villain of the film might be alien baddie Starro.

Here is a rundown of the cast.

  • Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
  • Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
  • Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang
  • Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag
  • Idris Elba as Bloodsport
  • John Cena as Peace-Maker

Margot Robbie and ‘Birds of Prey’ Screenwriter Christina Hodson Attached To A Second ‘Pirates of The Caribbean’ Film – Will She Play Redd?

It looks like Disney is putting a lot of energy into their Pirates of The Caribbean franchise.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Disney is now developing a second film alongside the reboot they’re working on. This second project would star Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey actress Margot Robbie in an undisclosed leading role with screenwriter Christina Hodson writing this new film.

Hodson is likely best known for her work on the DC Comics films such as Birds of Prey, Batgirl, and most recently with rewrites on The Flash.

Robbie being Australian might be a good excuse to shoot at the various sea-side locations and studios down under. I’m also curious if they’re planning on giving her the role of Redd, the updated attraction character from the parks that is now a female pirate.

This female project is said to be featuring new/original characters. Also, would separate from the Pirates reboot that writers Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Last of Us) had been working on recently for Disney.

It certainly sounds like the studio is planning on expanding on the franchise without Jack Sparrow as both the films aren’t being pegged as sequels or a continuation of the previous installments.
