Netflix Adapting Keanu Reeves’ Comic ‘BRZRKR’ Into Live-Action Film & Anime Series – Reeves To Star In Both

Yesterday, Netflix announced they’ll be boarding the Keanu Reeves train as they’ve made a deal to adapt the BOOM! Studios/Reeves comic book BRZRKR for a live-action film and anime series as a follow-up afterwards. Reeves himself will, of course, star in both projects with the latter lending his voice.

BRZRKR is a brutally epic saga about an immortal warrior’s 80,000 year fight through the ages. The man known only as “B” is half-mortal and half-god, , cursed and compelled to violence… even at the sacrifice of his sanity. But after wandering the earth for centuries, B may have finally found a refuge – working for the U.S. government to fight the battles too violent and too dangerous for anyone else. In exchange, B will be granted the one thing he desires – the truth about his endless blood-soaked existence…and how to end it.

The anime series will further expand the BRZRKR universe by exploring different elements of the story. In the series, Reeves will reprise his role and voice his character.

Keanu is coming off a shoot for Matrix 4 aka Matrix Resurrections at Warner Bros. with John Wick: Chapter 4 and John Wick: Chapter 5 on the horizon. While Lionsgate has suggested their plan is to film the next two John Wick installments back-to-back. There is a good chance John Wick: Chapter 5 will be the final film according to franchise creator Derek Kolstad.

Developing another action franchise at Netflix seems like the choice move there for Reeves.

The series is a remaining of the real-life story about Yasuke aka The Black Samurai, who became one of the first and only foreigners to obtain the rank of samurai in feudal Japan.

George R.R. Martin’s ‘Sandkings’ Getting A Netflix Movie Directed By Gore Verbinski

Another George R.R. Martin adaptation is on the way at Netflix.

Collider reports that Martin’s novelette Sandkings will be getting a feature film at Netflix from director Gore Verbinski and Dennis Kelly writing the script.

Veteran director Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean) is teaming with original Utopia creator Dennis Kelly on a feature adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s 1979 novelette Sandkings that is currently in the works at Netflix, Collider has exclusively learned.

Here is what the story is about.

The story follows a wealthy playboy named Simon Kress who collects dangerous, exotic animals. One day, he stumbles across a mysterious establishment called Wo & Shade, where he purchases a terrarium filled with four colonies of creatures called sandkings, which grow to fill whatever environment they are kept in. Each colony consists of a large female called the maw, and numerous insect-like mobiles that she controls via telepathy. In addition to finding food for the maw, the mobiles also construct a sandcastle around her to protect the maw from invading colonies. Indeed, the four colonies — white, black, red and orange — often engage in coordinated wars with one another, especially once their new owner makes them fight over food by starving them. Simon begins taking bets on the outcomes of these wars, which leave some of his friends impressed, and others disgusted. Eventually, the sandkings escape Simon’s terrarium and begin to take over his house as their hunger — and Simon’s desperation — intensifies.

Sandkings was adapted into an episode of The Outer Limits in the 1990s and takes place within Martin’s Thousand Worlds universe, which is also the setting of his sci-fi horror story Nightflyers that got a feature film and short-lived series.

Martin is busy producing multiple spinoff series at HBO set within the Game of Thrones franchise.

Verbinski directed films like The Ring, The Mexican, Disney’s Pirate of The Caribbean trilogy, and a lackluster Lone Ranger film. He famously attempted to make a feature film based on the video game BioShock that went nowhere and was one of the many directors that tried to make a solo Gambit film for 20th Century Fox before the X-Men rights returned to Marvel. Gore most recently made A Cure For Wellness.

‘Terminator’: Netflix & Production I.G Developing Anime Series With ‘The Batman’s Mattson Tomlin Set As Showrunner

The Terminator franchise isn’t dead according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Japanese animation studio Production I.G, Skydance, and Netflix are teaming up for a new anime series set within the Terminator universe with Mattson Tomlin set as writer and showrunner. Tomlin worked with Netflix on the superhero film Project Power and co-wrote The Batman with director Matt Reeves.

James Cameron’s Terminator franchise has had a rocky-road with varying degrees of success with sequels. The last entry directed by Tim Miller, Terminator: Dark Fate, was supposed to kick-off a brand new trilogy that producer Cameron was excited to explore but had a bit of trouble at the box office.

The new anime project could breath new life into the franchise when repeated attempts at reviving the films (three times) has been exactly what filmmakers had hoped.

‘The Division’: ‘Red Notice’ Director Rawson Marshall Thurber Replaces David Leitch On Netflix Video Game Movie

Deadline has word that David Lietch has been replaced as director on Netflix’s feature film adaptation of the video game Tom Clancy’s The Division. They’ve pivoted to director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who recently wrapped the high-budgeted heist flick Red Notice that stars Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds.

Marshall will co-write The Division’s script with Ellen Shanman.

The story is set in the near future with a virus spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the city of New York and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.

Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal are still set to star/produce the film.

Leitch is apparently too busy to tackle the film as he’s deep into production on Sony’s assassin flick Bullet Train starring Oscar-winner Brad Pitt. However, he’ll stay on as producer via 87North Productions.

It’s unknown when filming is going to start.

The Ubisoft video game has been reasonably successful with two installments released.
