‘The Movie Critic’: Rumor Claims Quentin Tarantino Offered Paul Walter Hauser The Lead Role In His 10th & Final Theatrical Film

Quentin Tarantino has been hyping the next film (his tenth) will be his final entry into the world of theatrical feature film directing as he’s mused about writing more books and making series/miniseries such as “Bounty Law” in his upcoming phase of “retirement.” While we know some of the plot beats and that the title is “The Movie Critic,” we’re still mostly in the dark concerning the all-important element, the film’s casting.

The main lead of the film is said to be a movie critic working in Los Angeles (Tarantino just got approved for a $20 million California tax credit for shooting in the state) for a “porno rag” in 1977 (the year “Star Wars” was released) and is loosely based on a real person (assumed to be someone that Tarantino is familiar with). Tarantino has compared the lead character to that of the Robert De Niro character Travis Bickle from the classic NYC thriller “Taxi Driver” that hailed from director Martin Scorsese and legendary screenwriter Paul Schrader. Taking place in Los Angeles in the late 70’s will certainly give the film a different feel from other things that Tarantino has made, even “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”

There is a new rumor that suggests at least one actor might be or have been in the mix for that lead role. According to Daniel Richtman via Patreon, he claims that actor Paul Walter Hauser had been offered the unnamed lead role in the pic before the strikes.

Hauser has been gathering steam with standout roles in projects like Spike Lee’s “BlakKklansman” and “Da 5 Bloods,” “I, Tonya,” Disney’s “Cruella,” Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell,” and most recently landing an Emmy nomination for his prison drama “Black Bird” that he co-stars alongside Taron Egerton.

While it’s certainly a name that feels like a good fit for Tarantino, it’s still just a rumor at this point. As with all unsupported rumors that aren’t being echoed by industry trade outlets, take it with a grain of salt. It’s also worth mentioning that Daniel is quick to point out this information was brewing ahead of the Hollywood strikes which is an indicator this could change.

Tarantino isn’t as out of the public eye as he used to be to comment on these sorts of things and does interviews on a regular basis alongside a podcast. So, I would assume he could debunk or support this rumbling if it ends up being brought to his attention. Previously, Tarantino gave clarifying statements when the rumor of the lead character was going to be based on Pauline Kael, a noted female movie critic from the New York Times. This was quickly dismissed as inaccurate information that was circulating. It’s not like mistakes haven’t already been made when covering this upcoming project.

Despite previous working relationships with both Sony Pictures and Netflix, “The Movie Critic” is without an official studio/distribution partner which is expected to change in the very near future as it sounds like Tarantino has figured out financing for the film if he’s applying for tax credits ahead of the shoot, likely sometime in 2024 given the strikes. We have assumed since the film was first announced that longtime cinematographer Robert Richardson would reunite with the filmmaker after first working with him on the two “Kill Bill” installments and “The Movie Critic” would make this their 7th film together.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Ewan McGregor Says Production Begins Late Spring In Los Angeles

Despite rumblings that Lucasfilm has started shooting Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Disney+ series star Ewan McGregor while chatting with comedian Eddie Izzard for a charity streaming event revealed that production won’t be taking place until “late spring” and that the production location is actually going to be Los Angeles, California and not the United Kingdom as previously rumored.

The chat taking place during Izzard’s marathon Run For Hope and the clip with Ewan was posted on Reddit.

MCGREGOR: “We start making it in the late spring and we’re going to be shooting it here in [Los Angeles].”

He also took some grabs at the inaccurate tabloid reporting on the upcoming production and were it would be taking place stating it had always been planned for a shoot in California, not Boston or the United Kingdom.

My former website Omega Underground actually had talked about Obi-Wan Kenobi possibly shooting in California back in 2017, when the project was still being considered as a feature film at Lucasfilm and we pointed out the state being a strong contender for it’s production for a multitude of reasons.

A late spring shoot would suggest they might not begin until around May-June, given that most projects are being delayed due to COVID-19 seeing them push back from a March start wouldn’t be all that shocking. According to Deadline, The Book of Boba Fett is currently shooting in the California facility which might also have something to do with it.

There is also an interesting production crew report from a South Korean site Cine21 (spotted by Star Wars News Net) that Oldboy cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung has been tapped for the series, however, this has yet to be confirmed by Disney/Lucasfilm. His other credits include IT, The Handmaiden, Uncharted, and Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho.

What we do know is that Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) is directing with Hayden Christensen officially singed-on to reprise the role of Darth Vader. We should also expected to start hearing casting news in the very near future as we get closer to the Star Wars show’s production start.

‘The Gray Man’: Russo Brothers May Begin Shooting End of January In Long Beach – Spy Flick Adding ‘Captain America: Civil War’ & ‘F9’ Stunt Coordinator

A new report from Deadline is suggest that the California production start on Netflix’s $200+ million budgeted spy flick The Gray Man from Avengers: Endgame directors The Russo Brothers might be seeing a production delay pushing the film’s start into early February or late January from it’s original planned start in mid-January due to positive COVID-19 tests. Netflix is hoping the expensive project could become a franchise on the level of James Bond.

The script was penned by the Russos with help from Marvel Studios alumni Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

The Gray Man is the debut novel by Mark Greaney, published in 2009 by Jove Books. It also is the first novel to feature the Gray Man, freelance assassin and former CIA operative Court Gentry. The action thriller will follow Gentry (Gosling) as he’s hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort at the CIA. The film is based on the first installment of the best-selling Gray Man book series.

It’s impressive cast already consists of Ryan Gosling (The Nice Guys, Drive, Blade Runner 2049), Chris Evans (Snowpiercer, Avengers franchise, Captain America franchise), Ana de Armas (No Time To Die, Knives Out, Blade Runner 2049), Jessica Henwick (The Matrix 4, Godzilla vs Kong, Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Wagner Moura (Narcos, Elysium), Dhanush, and young actress Julia Butters (Once Upon A Time In Hollywood).

The Ronin has also learned that 2nd unit director and veteran stunt coordinator Spiro Razatos is expected to join the spy movie’s production team. Razatos’ extensive credits include The Expendables, Fast Five, X-Men: First Class, Fast & Furious 6, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Furious 7, Captain America: Civil War, Kong: Skull Island, The Fate of The Furious, Venom, 21 Bridges, Bad Boys For Life, and F9.

The Russo Brothers are busy bees as they’ve wrapped on their Tom Holland (Spider-Man 3) crime drama Cherry and are already lining up their next film The Electric State for Universal Pictures starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things, Godzilla vs Kong). They’ve also been developing a live-action feature film based on the anime series Battle of The Planets and have considered returning to Marvel Studios to direct an event film such as Secret Wars.

A release date for The Gray Man has yet to be set by Netflix.

Olivia Wilde Thriller ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Halts Due To Positive COVID-19 Test – Had Been Filming In Los Angeles

Yesterday, Deadline confirmed that Los Angeles filming on the New Line Cinema thriller Don’t Worry Darling has temporarily paused due to a positive COVID-19 test from an undisclosed member of the production, not to be part of the main cast. The period film being directed by Booksmart’s Olivia Wilde has an impressive cast that includes Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, KiKi Layne, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, and Olivia Wilde.

Production will pause for 14 days.

New Line tonight temporarily shut down production on the Olivia Wilde-directed film Don’t Worry Darling when a member of the production tested positive for COVID-19. The studio confirmed it happened, something that is an occupational hazard for any film or TV show that is shooting right now. They shut down right away.

With the United States hitting 103,000+ single day new positive COVID-19 cases, an all-time record, there is a good chance that other productions in and outside of California are likely going to see more productions hit with positive tests. Even with aggressive safety protocols in place.

The New Line project isn’t the only project filming stateside that has had hiccups due to positive tests as Dwayne Johnson (along with his family) tested positive just weeks before Netflix’s Red Notice was set to resume filming in Atlanta. Speaking of Atlanta, Marvel Studios has a huge presence in the area with Disney+ shows wrapping up alongside Spider-Man 3, Hawkeye, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk all set to film there.

In mid-October, filming on the Netflix western The Harder They Fall starring Idris Elba and Regina King that was taking place in New Mexico paused for COVID-19 tests as well. Elba famously had previously dealt with the Coronavirus while in Australia and shared his experience on social media.

There were reports that Spyglass Media’s Scream 5 had three crew members contract COVID-19 in North Carolina but kept on filming anyways which sounds extremely risky from an insurance perspective and to the safety of their cast/crew.

Production bubbles seem to be where things are headed and might be a way to curb potential future shut downs. Bubbles limit the contact of people working on the film to outsiders and hinder the chance of positive tests, the NBA bubble was a huge success story over the summer.

Director Olivia Wilde is expected to follow-up Don’t Worry Darling with an untitled Sony/Marvel film which is reportedly focusing on Jesscia Drew aka Spider-Woman.
