Watch New Trailer For A24’s Eerily Gorgeous Arthurian Fantasy Film ‘The Green Knight’ – Coming July 30

Many films over the last year have seen their release dates pushed due to the pandemic and one of the projects I’ve been personally anticipating is David Lowery’s stunningly beautiful and dark take on the Arthurian legend with The Green Knight, an R-rated take on the classic tale Sir Gawain & The Green Knight.

The fantasy film’s stellar cast consists of Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire, Lion), Alicia Vikander (Jason Bourne, Ex Machina, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Tomb Raider), Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Zero Dark Thirty), Sarita Choudhury (Blindspot, Jessica Jones, Homeland), Sean Harris (Macbeth, The King, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Prometheus), Kate Dickie (The Witch, Game of Thrones, Prometheus), Barry Keoghan (The Batman, Eternals) and Ralph Ineson (Game of Thrones, The Witch).

At the moment, A24 has moved the film’s release date to July 30, 2021 and the studio has released a brand new trailer, which you can watch below.

THE GREEN KNIGHT – An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), King Arthur’s reckless and headstrong nephew, who embarks on a daring quest to confront the eponymous Green Knight, a gigantic emerald-skinned stranger and tester of men. Gawain contends with ghosts, giants, thieves, and schemers in what becomes a deeper journey to define his character and prove his worth in the eyes of his family and kingdom by facing the ultimate challenger. From visionary filmmaker David Lowery comes a fresh and bold spin on a classic tale from the knights of the round table.

Lowery is currently busy with his Disney film Peter Pan & Wendy, but I’ll be hopeful that he’ll return later on to continue making films in this R-rated fantasy world as they have plenty of other adventures from Knights of The Roundtable legends to turn into subsequent movies.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Officially Adds Kumail Nanjiani, Sung Kang, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Benny Safdie, Rupert Friend, Joel Edgerton & Others

Today, Lucasfilm has announced a batch of new additions to the cast of Obi-Wan Kenobi with Kumail Nanjiani, Sung Kang, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Benny Safdie, Rupert Friend, Joel Edgerton, Moses Ingram, Bonnie Piesse, and Simone Kessell. They’ll join the previously announced cast of Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, and Indira Varma.

The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

Bonnie and Joel will be reprising their prequel roles of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, these casting announcements would confirm that the limited series will add a young Luke Skywalker. This makes perfect sense as the limited series is set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of The Sith, also years before Star Wars: A New Hope and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Ewan McGregor has sort of hinted that we could see Ben Kenobi off-world and it’s been officially announced that Hayden will be returning to the role of Darth Vader, so the series will likely have an Imperial angle.

Ewan has confirmed the filming will take place in Los Angeles sometime in spring with Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) directing. The press release includes an update of an April production start.

Liam Neeson Open To Appearing As Qui-Gon Jinn In Flashback For ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Series – “I’d Be Up For That”

In Star Wars, death is not the end.

We’ve seen that anything can happen with Star Wars projects concerning the resurrection of characters and having actors reprising their roles. Collider recently spoke with The Phantom Menace actor Liam Neeson while promoting his new film The Marksman where they asked him if he’d be open to returning to the franchise potentially doing a flashback scene for Lucasfilm’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor as the former Jedi, now in hiding on Tatooine as he protects a young Luke Skywalker from being discovered by his father Darth Vader.

Liam sounded open to the idea of doing something for the Disney+ series.

NEESON: “Sure, I’d be up for that, yeah.”

Last month, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed during the Disney Investor Day presentation that Hayden Christensen would be returning to the franchise and will play Darth Vader. How much we’ll see of Hayden is unknown at this time.

Australian actor Joel Edgerton just might be back as Uncle Owen alongside a new actor playing a young Luke.

There is an expectation as with Andor, we could be hearing more casting announcements in the very near future ahead of it’s production start in a couple of months. We’ll keep our fingers-crossed that some Legends characters that has yet to join canon or live-action could be reworked for upcoming Star Wars shows such as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Deborah Chow, who directed action-heavy episodes of The Mandalorian in Season 1 will be helming Obi-Wan Kenobi with filming set to begin this March in the United Kingdom as announced by Kennedy and it’s release date expected to be sometime in 2022.

A24 Announces R-Rated Arthurian Film ‘The Green Knight’ Will Be Released In Late July

We’ve been all anticipating over the summer/fall when we’ll eventually get to see the Arthurian flick The Green Knight and now we have a better idea when A24 plans to release it. A24 Films has updated the film’s release date on their official website for July 30th, 2021.

The fantasy film is based on the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. They’re seemingly aiming for a much more adult audience as the film had recently earned an R rating from the MPAA for violence, some sexuality, and graphic nudity.

David Lowery directs a cast that includes Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson.

While we have no idea what will happen with the film’s earning potential, I would love to see A24/David Lowery potentially make a bunch of films based around the Arthurian legends given how beautiful The Green Knight looks and could become counter-programming to things like Lord of The Rings, which were directly influenced by these stories. Making a batch of artful fantasy films for adult audiences.
