‘Eternals’: Kevin Feige Reaffirms Gemma Chan’s Sersi Is The Film’s Main Character

After Chloe Zhao making waves over the weekend earning two Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for her fantastic film Nomadland, we’re all waiting to see footage from her next feature film, Marvel’s Eternals.

It’s based on the characters created by King Jack Kirby that mixed elements of Greek/Roman mythology alongside notions of aliens seeding Earth via Swiss author Erich von Daniken’s novel Chariots of The Gods, work that heavily influenced Ridley Scott’s Alien prequel Prometheus and the idea that humans are a science experiment of an alien race. In the case of Eternals, they are created by the the giant alien creatures known as the Celestials (first seen in Guardians of The Galaxy) alongside their antagonists The Deviants and early humans have the mutant gene hidden within them to later become the mutants we know from the X-Men.

While speaking with Variety, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige reiterates that while it’s a team project, the film’s main character is Gemma Chan’s Sersi, who is expected to become a full-fledged members of the Avengers just like the comic books.

FEIGE: “So for Sersi, for instance — and if there was a lead in this ensemble, it is Sersi, it is Gemma Chan — we looked at and read all sorts of women for that part. And ended up really believing that Gemma was best for it. And thankfully, she’s proven that to be the case in the final movie.”

While it was originally announced that Sersi would be the main character of the film in early casting reports, that was when trade outlets were under the impression that Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie was going to be landing that role. Instead, Angelina is playing the equally interesting heroine Thena and Marvel hired Captain Marvel’s Gemma Chan for her second MCU role. This new one is likely going allow her to stick around for much longer than she previously would have and allows the Marvel franchise to add another talented Asian lead.

The rest of the cast includes Kit Harington as Dane Whitman aka Black Knight, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Kumail Nanjani as Kingo, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, and Don Lee as Gilgamesh.

Sequels to Eternals are extremely likely could see the team go head-to-head with folks like Hercules/The Olympians and Hyperion/Squadron Supreme. I think it all depends if Marvel Studios is able to convince Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao to return for multiple films after co-writing the script and directing the first installment, set to be released on November 5th, 2021. However, Zhao has been tapped by Universal for a new Dracula film and could be one of the projects that could whisk her away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a couple of years.

SET PHOTOS: First ‘Ms. Marvel’ Images Reveals Captain Marvel Fangirl Kamala Khan – Filming Officially Begins In Atlanta

We finally have photographic proof that Ms. Marvel (working title Jersey) has finally begun filming in Atlanta, Georgia.

Just Jared has posted a batch of first-look set photos from the Atlanta set from filming on Wednesday revealing Canadian actress Iman Vellani in character as Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan wearing what looks to be a Halloween costume of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel.

You can check out those pictures here.

Kamala Khan is a practicing Muslim Pakistani-American teenager living in New Jersey, who is a massive fan of Captain Marvel and develops her own superpowers (canonically is group of The Inhumans) then adopting the name Ms. Marvel (Carol’s original superhero name in the comics).

The series showrun by Bisha K. Ali has a group of directors that include Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

There is a strong possibility that Kamala could have involvement with Captain Marvel 2 and maybe even the Nick Fury series if it involves S.W.O.R.D. Ms. Marvel is also part of the New Avengers/Young Avengers making her an important character to the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe. It remains to be seen if Brie Larson will show up in Ms. Marvel even for a cameo.

There is an expectation that Ms. Marvel will be ready to begin airing on Disney+ in late 2021.

Samuel L. Jackson Reportedly Reprising Nick Fury Role For New Disney+ Series From Kyle Bradstreet – Is This The S.W.O.R.D. Show?

Samuel L. Jackson will return to the Nick Fury role for an unnamed Marvel Studios series for Disney+ according to a report from Variety. Kyle Bradstreet will write and executive produce. His television credits include Mr. Robot, Berlin Station, and Cooper.

The exact plot details of the show are being kept under wraps, but multiple sources say Jackson is attached to star with Kyle Bradstreet attached to write and executive produce. Like all the other Marvel shows at Disney Plus, Marvel Studios will produce.

Variety stops short from saying what the new series which most likely is the rumored S.W.O.R.D. series. The last time we saw Nick Fury was on a space station being built by Skrulls in outer space and we’ll see S.W.O.R.D. introduced later this year in WandaVision with what looks like Monica Rambeau is an Agent of S.W.O.R.D.

S.W.O.R.D. could become the Phase 4 replacement of S.H.I.E.L.D. given that future threats in the MCU are most likely going to be coming from beyond the stars and the Multiverse. With Skrulls on Earth and established there is also the possibility that a version of the Secret Invasion could also be explored.

I’m sure fans will be hopeful that if this turns out to be a S.W.O.R.D. series that characters such as Abigail Brand will be involved and with Cobie Smulder’s television series Stumptown being cancelled I wouldn’t be shocked if Maria Hill is eventually attached.

Captain Marvel 2 has director Nia DaCosta attached and there is an expectation that S.W.O.R.D. will have large presence for Earthbound scenes in that sequel allowing for Fury, Monica Rambeau, and even possibly Ms Marvel aka Kamala Khan to get involved.

‘Captain Marvel 2’ Indeed Set To Shoot In The UK

This morning, it was first revealed by Charles Murphy that Captain Marvel 2 is going to be shooting in the United Kingdom. A bit of a shakeup after the last film was primarily shot in the United States taking advantage of the California tax credits.

We can also confirm the information is correct and that Marvel Studios film will indeed film in the UK.

Other MCU projects shooting across the pond include Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness at Longcross Studios, Ant-Man 3 (likely at Pinewood Studios UK) and the Disney+ series Moon Knight.

The sequel most likely would be heading to Pinewood Studios UK. The same facility recently used for Black Widow and Eternals.

Candyman director Nia DaCosta was recently hired to direct from a script penned by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell. Megan’s series WandaVision will be introducing the adult version of Monica Rambeau and S.W.O.R.D., which are expected to be important elements of Captain Marvel 2.

Brie Larson is set to reprise the role of Carol Danvers with an assumption that Samuel L. Jackson, Teyonah Parris, and Ben Mendelsohn will have roles as well.

In post-COVID-19 Hollywood, it really isn’t easy to predict when the sequel will begin production as there are two other major Marvel Studios films expected to shoot there that haven’t started along with a Disney+ series, making the production space a little crowded when you have to factor in multiple studios are shooting films next year as well.

Moving from California to England is also a good idea when wildfires became an issue during the first installment and continue to be a statewide problem. Not to mention the large population of California makes it a prime target for a resurgence of new COVID-19 cases. The live-action Little Mermaid movie is shooting at Pinewood and their comfort resuming the production could be another reason why Disney wanted to move Captain Marvel 2 to a UK facility.

Disney has given Captain Marvel 2 a release date of July 8th, 2022 but remains to be seen if they’ll stick to it if they end up having scheduling issues.

‘Captain Marvel 2’ Reportedly Adds ‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta

It looks like another Phase 4 film has landed a director!

Deadline is reporting that Marvel has chosen a new director for Captain Marvel 2 instead of bringing back Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who directed the first installment. According to the new report they’ve hired Nia DaCosta the director of Little Woods and the upcoming Candyman film for MGM Studios that is produced by Jordan Peele.

This news has yet to be confirmed by Marvel Studios or Disney.

Brie Larson is returning as Carol Danvers and it’s a little unknown when cameras will begin rolling.

Considering the current release date of the film is July 8th, 2022, starting production next spring/summer would make sense, however, it’s unknown if the backlog of projects at Marvel Studios due to COVID-19 will have an impact on that.

Feature films like Thor: Love & Thunder, Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man 3, and Ant-Man 3 are most likely going to shoot in 2021 alongside various new Disney+ shows. There is a small chance that stuff like Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2 might see their shoots pushed to 2022 with rescheduled release dates sometime in 2023.

Details on the upcoming project are scarce but with WandaVision‘s Megan McDonnell having been tapped to write the sequel this would suggest that it could have a huge connection to S.W.O.R.D. (S.H.I.E.L.D.’s intergalactic counterpart) and an adult Monica Rambeau played by Teyonah Parris, both being introduced in the Disney+ series.

We most likely will see the return of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury, who last we saw was busy on vacation as a group of Skrulls were building a space station. That station would most likely end up being The Peak or another base of operations for S.W.O.R.D. considering that humans aren’t likely able to building something like that as quickly as Skrulls.

It remains to be seen if Ms. Marvel‘s Kamala Khan will also join the project but there is a good shot the teenager might have a role to play in Captain Marvel 2.

There have been unconfirmed internet rumors of the sequel tackling the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. That might just be a little too ambitious given the scale of that story and the volume of heroes/actors needed to be involved for that to come together.

Disney Enlists Jude Law To Play Captain Hook In ‘Peter & Wendy’

Yesterday, The Ronin was able to independently confirm that Peter & Wendy director David Lowery would be reuniting with Pete’s Dragon cinematographer Bojan Bazelli (Snake Eyes, The Ring, The Lone Ranger, Spectral) on the live-action version of the classic Peter Pan tale for Disney.

Now, Variety reports that they’ve found their Captain Hook with British actor Jude Law and is currently in talks with the studio. He had recently worked with Disney playing the villain of their cosmic MCU film Captain Marvel.

Jude’s credits include The Talented Mr. Ripley, Enemy At The Gates, Sherlock Holmes, Road To Perdition, Gattaca, Cold Mountain, and his film Contagion recently got a resurgence of popularity on various streaming platforms due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The outlet also insists that Peter & Wendy is still aiming for a theatrical release and won’t be dumped on their streaming service Disney+.

I’m slightly curious if Jude takes the role could it possibly conflict with the production of Fantastic Beasts 3. Law plays a younger version of Dumbledore in those films. Considering the issues that franchise currently has with the problematic public images of Johnny Depp, Ezra Miller, and creator/screenwriter J.K. Rowling I wouldn’t be shocked if we started to see actors decline the project.

The news would suggest that Warner Bros. isn’t moving on Sherlock Holmes 3 anytime soon as well.

Filming was originally set to begin last month under the working title Bonfire and complete by October in Vancouver, but there are signs that the film and television industry might not resume until after the first week in September.

Lowery’s latest film The Green Knight, saw it’s theatrical release date postponed because of the pandemic and a new date has yet to be announced.
