‘Jack Ryan’ & ‘Altered Carbon’ Actress Dina Shihabi Might Be Joining Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’ Series

The Ronin is hearing that Arab-European actress Dina Shihabi is potentially up for an undisclosed role in Marvel’s Moon Knight series led by Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector. Shihabi’s credits are mostly from the world of television appearing on Amazon’s Jack Ryan series, Season 2 of the Netflix cyberpunk series Altered Carbon, Netflix’s Daredevil series as Neda Kazemi, the Hulu comedy series Ramy, and recently wrapped on the Netflix series Archive 81 produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster. 

However, we weren’t able to confirm if the actress has signed on or what the character might be. 

Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, a mercenary who has numerous alter egos — cabbie Jake Lockley and millionaire playboy Steven Grant — in order to better fight the criminal underworld. But later he was established as being a conduit for the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. Most recently, the character was a consultant who dresses in all-white and goes by the name Mr. Knight. 

In the comics, Marc Spector was born in Chicago to a Jewish-American family and his father was a rabbi that fled Nazi persecution as a child in Czechoslovakia during WWII. Marc is a former U.S. Marine turned C.I.A. operative, who also had a stint as a boxer. 

Directors Mohamed Diab, Justin Benson, and Aaron Moorhead are behind the new Marvel series with actors Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy nabbing key roles in Moon Knight. The Umbrella Academy’s Jeremy Slater is the series head writer with The Witcher’s Beau DeMayo also contributing. 

The show’s producing team includes Grant Curtis (Spider-Man 1-3, Drag Me To Hell, The Gift, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of The Shadows), Tommy Turtle (The Cell, Immortals, The Fall, Mirror Mirror, Krypton, The Mosquito Coast), and Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four, Death Note). 

Filming is underway in Budapest with the United Kingdom confirmed as a second filming location and Jordan also being eyed, the latter location was previously used in Oscar’s big studio sci-fi films Dune and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Moon Knight’s crew consists of cinematographer Gregory Middleton (Watchmen, Fringe), production designer Stefania Cella (Morbius, Black Mass, White Boy Rick), and stunt coordinator Olivier Schneider (No Time To Die). 

She-Hulk is currently shooting in Atlanta with other Disney+ shows on the horizon such as the Skrull crossover event series Secret Invasion, Dominique Throne’s Ironheart, Don Cheadle’s Armor Wars, Ryan Coogler’s Wakanda series, and Alaqua Cox’s Echo series.

Marvel is aiming to debut Moon Knight on Disney+ in the first half of 2022 and has been confirmed by Kevin Feige to have a 6-episode season.

‘She-Hulk’ Series Adds ‘Altered Carbon’s Renee Elise Goldsberry As Amelia

Marvel Studios was reportedly said to have kicked-off production on their Disney+ series She-Hulk last month in Atlanta, Georgia. The show seems to be still assembling the main cast as a new report from Deadline has revealed that Renee Elise Goldsberry will be playing a character named Amelia.

While not confirmed by Marvel, people have assumed this role could be Amelia Voght, a mutant nurse from the pages of X-Men comics and member of the Acolytes. It’s also possible it could be another character created for the She-Hulk series as while there have been hints to mutants with the introductions of Madripoor and S.W.O.R.D., Marvel hasn’t officially added mutant characters to the MCU.

The American actress is likely best known from the musical Hamilton, the Netflix cyberpunk series Altered Carbon, and Ally McBeal. The latter series is said to be sort of an influence on the legal Marvel project.

She’ll be joining a cast that includes Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters aka She-Hulk, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner aka Hulk, Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky aka Abomination, and Ginger Gonzaga as Jennifer’s best friend.

The creative team sees Kat Coiro and Anu Valia directing episodes with Rick & Morty’s Jessica Gao as the head writer.

Walters is a defense lawyer that specializes in superhero and super-villain cases. In the comics, after a life-threatening accident she requires a blood transfusion from her cousin Bruce Banner leading to her acquiring her own Hulk abilities. However, unlike Bruce Banner once turned into She-Hulk she remains in her green form similar to how Bruce/Hulk is in Avengers: Endgame. There had been hints we’ll see other Marvel superheroes and lawyers in the series.

Jennifer has joined multiple superhero teams over the years including Fantastic Four, Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., A-Force, and Heroes For Hire.

She-Hulk will debut on Disney+ sometime in 2022.

Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy Teases Desire To Explore ‘The Old Republic’ Again?

Could we finally see Lucasfilm tackle a cinematic version of The Old Republic era?

While speaking with The Wrap, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy recently talked about the future of Star Wars suggesting an interest of exploring other eras in the universe as they’re currently stepping back to figure what they want to do as they focus more on the Disney+ shows for the next couple of years.

Specifically mentioning the mythology of Star Wars spanning over 25,000 years, an obvious reference to The Old Republic.

KENNEDY: “And now we’re stepping back. Stories have been told within this universe over the last 40-odd years, and there’s now the realization that this is a mythology that actually spans about 25,000 years, when you really start to look at all the different stories that have been told, whether it’s in books and games.”

“We just need the time to step back and really absorb what George has created, and then start to think about where things might go. That’s what we’ve been doing, and we’ve been having a great deal of fun doing it, and meeting with lots of different filmmakers and talent. There’s so many fans out there and so many filmmakers that have been influenced by Star Wars for so long that it’s a fantastic opportunity to get a sense of who wants to be a part of this. So that’s what we’ve been doing.”

This isn’t the first time Kennedy has teased an interest in going backwards with Star Wars mythology, when asked by MTV News about development on something in The Old Republic, Kennedy confirmed development but stopped short on giving any details about when that could happen.

KENNEDY: “You know, we talk about that all the time. Yes, we are developing something to look at.”

Last year, BuzzFeed reported that the Altered Carbon series creator Laeta Kalogridis was writing a Star War film that was set within The Old Republic and could potentially become a trilogy.

There was also some interesting news this week as it was announced via Deadline that Netflix has cancelled Altered Carbon after two seasons allowing Kalogridis to move on to other things, like this potential Old Republic trilogy for Lucasfilm/Disney.

Thor: Ragnarok and Thor: Love & Thunder director Taika Waititi is officially helming a Star Wars movie for the studio, but details about his project are scarce. He’ll be co-writing with Oscar nominated screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Last Night In Soho, 1917).

We still don’t know where in the timeline that film will be taking place.

The scope of The Old Republic would allow Lucasfilm and filmmakers to create a brand new path for the Star Wars film franchise since they could jump into certain points in the past and not being beholden to the original trilogy along with forced to connect to it because there is so much time between the eras.

I guess we’ll have to wait to get some solid details from Lucasfilm what they are planning on doing.
